February 2005...
The bell rang, indicating the end of English class.
"Okay class, make sure to do the assignment and submit it tomorrow". Mr Jonathan said before leaving the class.
Christine led her to the cafeteria where they got a free bench and sat. Savannah brought her own lunch from home and brought out a little food flask out of it.
"So how would you rate your first day here?" Christine asked her as she too brought out her food flask.
"I can't compare Saints with my old school. I already like my first day here". Savannah said as she took her first spoon.
"Why can't you compare here and Saints. What's wrong with your old school?" Christine asked as she too took a spoon of food.
Savannah swallowed her food before taking a sip of water, " nothing. It's just that, my old school is a public school and Saints is a private school, the difference is huge".
For a while none of them said anything before three more girls approached their table.
"Is there space for three more?" Savannah recognized the girl as Rachel and the other two as Hannah and Amanda.
"Sure", Christine said as the two girls sat down beside her.
"Your name's Savannah, right?" Hannah said once she sat down.
Savannah looked up to see them before saying, "Yeah".
For a while the place got silent again as the five continued eating.
Savannah was about to take a sip of water when her she saw a familiar face walking to an empty bench. Kyle also brought food from home. He sat down on the empty bench as he brought out his food and started eating. Suddenly she thought of something.
"Hey, what's up with that guy?" Savannah said as Christine, Amanda, Rachel and Hannah stopped eating and turned to look in the direction she was looking at.
"Do you mean Kyle? He's always like that". Rachel said before taking another bite from her sandwich. Savannah wanted to ask another question but thought twice before keeping it to herself.
" He's also a new student". Christine said before taking a sip from a juice.
"Really?" Savannah asked as she looked up to see Christine.
"Don't listen her, he resumed last year". Rachel said before taking another bite from her sandwich. With the few hours she'd spent with these four, she noticed something about them. Christine is a social butterfly and is friends with everyone, that's why it didn't take time for her to blend with Savannah. Rachel is more on the quite side but is really close with Hannah and Amanda. She's also the most mature out of the four. Hannah is also like Christine but a bit less childish. Amanda, unlike Christine and Rachel, has a different way of doing things.
"Okay let's stop talking about Kyle and change the subject. So, how was life at your old school?" Amanda said, which brought Savannah back to reality.
"My old school had a different way of doing things. They were quite unpredictable and sometimes annoying". Savannah said before she continued eating her food.
"What do you mean by unpredictable". Christine asked as she drank the last gulp out of her orange juice.
"Was it in a good or bad way?" Hannah asked. All these questions made Savannah think deeper about her old school. The school wasn't as big as Saints and didn't have a fancy stairway at the center of the hallway. Her old school was infact quite small if she thought about it. There were only 12 classrooms, one for each grade and about 5 laboratories. Other than that, it had a swimming pool with only one court, football.
"A bad way. They could cancel an event a week to it and give you false hope on how fun it was going to be. But at least they don't have strict rules". Savannah said before using her fork to play with her food.
For the rest of lunch break, Savannah kept her head low and detached herself from the conversation. Even with the warm welcome, Savannah still felt like it would be hard to fit in.
It didn't take long for the bell to ring, signaling the end of lunch. All five of them packed their lunch boxes before heading out of the cafeteria.
Just then, Savannah realized that she still didn't know her way around the school. She followed Christine out of the cafeteria before stopping her.
"Hey, do you know where the chemistry lab is?" Savannah asked her as students made their way out of the cafeteria. She memorised the time table given to her and didn't want to be late for any class.
"Yeah, actually, I can take you there". Christine said as the two of them made their way to the lockers.
...
As soon as the last bell was rung, all the students started packing their books as some were already at the door.
Savannah packed her books and made her way to her locker. For a first day, she didn't really have any complaints about the school system, infact, she loved it. Though, there was just one thing wrong, she still had a lot to do to boost her overall grade for the mid terms. But it was still a relief that she had Christine and Debbie to help her.
She put all her books in her bag and made her way out the door. Since she wasn't yet familiar with the school, she decided to go to the playground and wait for her mom. Adam wasn't around so she sat by the swing and pulled her phone out of her bag.
It had been a while since she last chatted with Debbie, so she decided to tell her how her day went.
"Hey, I hope you're not busy. A lot has happened today". She switched off her phone and waited for a while when she saw Christine walking out of the school building.
"Hey, why are you sitting here all by yourself". Christine as she stood next to Savannah.
Savannah shook her head before saying, "my brother is still inside. I'm waiting for my mom to pick me up". Suddenly, Savannah's phone chimed. She checked it and saw Debbie's text notification.
"Who is that?" Christine said when she heard the sound of the notification.
"My friend. We were in the same school before I moved". Savannah said before reading Debbie's text.
'What happened. Is the school interesting? Are the people there nice?' A small smile formed on Savannah's lips as she read the text.
'Yeah, they're nice. The school is really interesting. I also met someone'. Savannah sent the text before turning off her phone again.
"Why can't you just tell me what the two of you are talking about. I won't tell anyone". Christine said as she put her arm on Savannah's shoulder.
"It's nothing important. I'm just telling her about Saints".
"And you're also talking about the people, right? Anyways, have you told her about me yet?" Christine said as she turned to look at her.
"Yeah. But she doesn't know what you look like".
"How can you tell her about me without telling me what I look like? Anyways, you can take a picture of me and send it to her". Christine said as she stood Infront of Savannah.
Savannah was about to take a photo of Christine when she heard her phone chim again. She quickly checked the text to see what it was.
' stop putting me in suspense and just tell me who it is'.
' I saw a boy. I don't know if it's just me, but, he acts weird'. It didn't take up to a minute before Debbie replied.
' wow. How many boys would you like in a year. First it was Nathan and now some new guy'. Savannah read the text before dropping switching of her phone. Christine noticed this and walked up to her.
"What's going on. Why haven't you taken the photo?" Christine said as she noticed Savannah's phone. " Who are you texting this time?" Christine said before she tried to get Savannah's phone.
" No. Wait", she started as Christine slowly released her hand, " I was texting Debbie", Savannah said as she looked at Christine, " boys are a piece of work". Savannah said as she turned back to look at her phone...
