Chapter 9 - No Turning Back

After looking at his status screen, Michael understood everything except what the numerical values under his stats meant. Was nine a good stat for a twelve year old? He wanted to ask Uriel but decided to ask Alicia less the walk continues to get awkward.

"Alicia, do you know what a nine in dexterity means? Is it good for someone my age?" Asked Michael who put on a pitiful child like smile.

"Ms. Taylor at the orphanage said that regular humans who awaken early won't have any stats that surpass ten unless they're the geniuses who are applying to attend Worldview high in California. Of course mana is a different case, they awaken one hundred or more in their mana stats while we awaken around 40 mana stats on average I think." Said Alicia as she talked without turning her head.

(Basically all of my stats are trash besides the fact that my light element has a S Rank affinity.) thought Michael in a pondering gaze.

(Yes, without years of medicinal medicine and training that those geniuses had, your physique is the only thing that allowed your stats to reach close to ten. Even then, only when you reach ten or more in a stat are you considered an F rank. E Rank makes you achieve 50 or more in a stat, and D rank is one hundred or more. C Rank is where an awakener is considered somewhat powerful and that hurdle is to reach 200 or more in a stat.) Uriel felt that Michael was finally understanding a little about how this world works.

"Alicia, can we take the back way to the orphanage, I could use the extra air and time to think." Michael projected a feeling of being unwell which left Alicia no choice but to accept his suggestion.

"Sure, let's just turn in this back alley, we can go the route that no one ever goes so you won't have to worry about the noises either."

(Sigh* damn she's considerate.) Michael realized that the previous owner of this body and Alicia were close like siblings. She scolded him at first, but after she realized that he may have memory loss or brain damage, she wanted to observe him and be more considerate.

After another twenty minutes of walking, Michael and Alicia were cutting across alley ways that looked damp and deserted. It was a stark contrast to the busy streets and store fronts from earlier. After going into the latest alley way Alicia began to speak to ease the journey.

"Mikey, are you ok, and what's up with that white kitten? It's been f—-"

CRACKKK!!!

Alicia's body fell to the ground with the same expression on her face that she had when she was being concerned about Michael. Behind her now lifeless body, is Michael with a neutral look on his face looking down at here mumbling quietly.

"You seemed kind, and because of that I'm sorry that I had to do this to survive. I have no excuse and I know this makes me a terrible person but I truly apologize." Said Michael as he still sports his look of neutrality.

"What the hell are you doing human?!" Yelped Uriel who didn't expect this turn of events. She wanted him to devour her ability but she felt that she'd have to manipulate him into taking that step later. She assumed he'd fight the temptation due to the information based off of him from his last life.

"Enough, tell me how to devour her ability and then tell me where we can go to find the nearest dungeon." He stated this solemnly with no room for Uriel to argue.

"You're devour ability should be Rank F, If that's the case you'll have to grab both of her eyes and absorb the mana in them directly . This may take awhile so you'll have to continuously concentrate for however long the process takes." Uriel was looking forward to seeing him use devour for the first time. She also still had a nagging notion to ask him about Alicia but his demeanor told her that he wouldn't talk about it.

"Do I have to dig them out?" Asked Michael who hoped for a no to his question.

"That'll be the wise decision since it could take hours or minutes to devour them. It's better to dig them out now and find a safe place to devour. This may be messy but remember, things will be like this from here on out so let's go."

Thirty minutes later*

Michael is under an over pass siting with his legs crossed on the ground with two eyeballs in both hands. There is a bit of blood on his black hoody but the color of the hoody keeps it from standing out too much.

Alicia is sitting crossed legged as well next to Michael with dried up bloody tear statins in her eyes. After Alicia died, Uriel transformed into a streak of light and entered her body, now possessing the body of Alicia.

"Now human concentrate on the feeling of hunger, concentrate on activating your mana to satiate that feeling. Then you'll understand how your ability truly works. If you can activate it, remember to concentrate on devour as long as you're feeling hungry." said Uriel who is now in Alicia's body.

As Michael concentrated on feeling hungry, he finally activates his Devour ability by using mana. He can feel the mana in the eyes feeding him and relaying energy back into his eyes as well. His eyes begin to feel as if they're burning, but remembering Uriel's advice he keeps concentrating on devouring despite the uncomfortable feeling. Unbeknownst to him, his deep blue eyes have turned red currently and time has passed quicker than he expects.

The sky is now dark and Michael finally opened his eyes to see Uriel laying on the dirty ground as if she's on a couch taking a nap.

"About time you finished slow poke, that took over four hours you know? So how are your eyes? Did it work?!" Uriel is excited to know the results since the Divine Eyes can help Michael scout for potential talents.

"Yes, it worked without issue and these things are truly amazing." Michael was feeling excited now, even though he felt guilty about Alicia he knew he needed to do this so he could get started on his journey. He didn't want close intimate connections with people who seemed like family. He felt it was better to not meet the kids and adults at the orphanage and to severe his ties with Alicia as well. But this isn't his excuse for killing her, the eyes were reason enough and he wouldn't deny that fact.

"All that's left now is to look at my Status!"
