Chapter 42 - Plans Set In Motion

Days passed by in close succession, and Audrey was almost unable to fathom that she worked in such a big company. She felt it, she was finally getting there, the life she hoped for, where she didn't owe any debt, where she could have the life she dreamt of, it was definitely coming.

She had been in the company mostly after she had been passed the pending jobs needed to be proofread, cross-checked, and accessed before it was a done deal. Me Cohen didn't have an assistant for so long, and the staff in the investments department had their own workload to attend to.

Audrey didn't even think she could do so much work, all the pending files were from all the investment branches in the whole continent, "how do these people even do this!", Audrey muttered as she went about her day, proof reading files and being extra careful as any mistake could cause hazardous consequences.

It was a Friday and Audrey really hoped she could finish the job before she went home for the weekend. Then, she could tag along with Prisca and Lizzy to the restaurant, making multiple desserts, and serving customers who smiled in anticipation to savor the meal, she looked forward to spending time with them.

She hadn't noticed earlier, but just when she finished reminiscing what was waiting for her as soon as she clocked out, she heard thunder rumbling, followed by the sound of the droplets of rainwater hitting the ground.

Audrey's stomach grumbled, " damn it!", Audrey cursed because she couldn't get food in the office, and the rain had started, she wasn't even with an umbrella. She sat back preparing her mind and begging her stomach for the hunger strike she was about to put herself through, well, that was till the rain stopped.

Audrey remained in her cubicle proofreading and cross-checking, basically doing her job and somehow, she enjoyed it. She had been enthusiastic about the course since college, she finally got the job, and she enjoyed it, hell if she even knew that this types of jobs didn't need a degree, she would have applied to other companies. Maybe she might have even cleared the bills.

Audrey snapped out of her self-pity and got back to the stack that awaited her, she didn't notice as the rain grew heavy and the other staff on the floor went home after calling cabs or settling for buying umbrellas on the way if they needed one.

She was left in her cubicle, a small lamp illuminating the small space as she didn't want to call attention to herself in the night. She finally finished the stack for the week, contented and with a smile on her face, Audrey waited for the elevator, the door dinged open to see the last person she expected to see resting on the side of the elevator, one leg crossed on the other, his necktie hung low as a button was open, revealing his collar bone and a peek of the taut muscles underneath the shirt.

She traced his silhouette from his foot up, taking in the neatly dressed but tired man in front of her, when she got to his face, the piercing blue eyes looked at her with an evident smirk on his face. "Are you coming in!?", Lucas asked, Audrey quickly collecting herself and snapping out of whatever it is she was doing, " No!", she shrieked, "I mean, no, I'll use the other one sir!", Audrey said about to take a step when she heard, " get in!", it was short, concise, leaving no room for arguments.

Lucas who usually worked late into the night had asked the secretaries and even Craig to go home earlier as it was a Friday. He finally finished his work, wearing his blazers and leaving his office, he was about to go in his private elevators when he stopped abruptly. The employees should have gone home, even despite the heavy rain, weekends meant that much to them.

He took the other elevator for the routine check nobody knew he sometimes did, just to see how the staff used the elevator and if it needed maintenance or any sort of upgrade. He leaned against the elevator, tired, when he knotted his eyebrows in confusion, he thought the employees should have gone home, but the doors dinged open to reveal the beautiful lady from the meeting room.

She was in a t-shirt, jeans and tennis shoes, typical, it was a Friday, he smiled, thinking how she looked like a college student. He watched as she took in his presence, dumbstruck by the view in front of her, it felt like forever just checking him out, so he asked, "are you getting in?", she had tried to escape being in the same space as him, he knew it, and it was unusual.

The time in the elevator was short, Audrey felt like she was being watched by the other person in the confined space, however, she didn't dare to look back, she didn't want to look back to see the piercing blue eyes she had seen earlier. Lucas was indeed looking at her, taking in her expressions as if they had to be in the confined space, he didn't wants to do it before but he couldn't help but stare at how curvy she was. All he could say was her backside was carved right, it wasn't freakishly big, but it was big enough to fit his hands.

Audrey had no plan to go home, there was no service, she was hungry, it was late and the rain was heavy. As if her stomach could no longer take the torture, her stomach growled loudly, Lucas tried so hard not to laugh because he knew she must be feeling really weird.

" How do you plan to go home?", Lucas asked as they walked out immediately the elevator dinged open, "I'll figure out a way!", Audrey answered, unsure of her reply. She stood as she watched Lucas head to the basement park, Audrey sighed, the cold finally getting to her, as she was away from the warmth of the office.

Suddenly she saw a black sports car parked in front of her, the tinted windows whining down to reveal Lucas," get in!", "oh sir, it's no bother, I'll just call my sister for help", Audrey said trying to refute his help, unfortunately, Lucas was having none of it, " get in Audrey!".
