Rex and I determined that we need to find ways to one gather food, two gain strength, and three secure our location. Rex has gone off to the plains to learn what's in that location. Luckily I can view where he is currently by moving mana into my eyes, it allows me to have the sight of an owl. My mana control is slowly starting to become second nature and I'm interested in creating a land mine, or at least a magical version of it. Though actually creating it is turning out to be harder than I expected. Maybe trying to create a rune would end up better than trying to create a land mine spell… yea lets try that. (system got any basics for rune crafting or?) " Yes I have some tips, simply move your mana to a single finger then condense it in that location, then draw the rune. I will give you the rune formation that you need this time, next time you will need to find a rune book or complete a quest to receive one for a reward."

I can cast this five times before my magic is depleted, luckily this should help me in leveling up my meditation skill while also giving us the defensive potential to stay here for a bit longer.
Before I go to set up these runes on the path towards our entrance I look over to Rex to make sure he's ok. Seems he's about to jump a group of three boars, he should be ok with that new mana enhancement skill he learned. I head towards the entrance of the cave and begin drawing the rune into the ground. It seems I can make the rune as large as I want. The only downside to it is it becomes greatly easier to see. The rune itself is a circle with symbols that I can't quite understand. I really wish the Universal speech skill worked on writing. When I finished the rune it gained a purplish tint to the rune, I can only assume two things with that, it has my mana flowing through it and it's activated. (will the rune activate if Rex or I step on it?) "it will activate if anyone steps on it"
Well that's gonna be something I have to inform Rex about and remind myself. I set up two more runes, one that is on the beach side and one coming from the forest. I am willing to bet that the creatures from the forest or the ocean won't take much damage from these, but it will allow us to know enemy contacts are coming towards the cave.
After finishing the rune by the forest, I head back to the spot on top of the cave that gives a view out into the plains. As I sit down and begin meditating, my mana seems to come back faster while I'm out here rather than in the cave. It takes me about eight minutes to regenerate the lost mana. Just in time as well because as I look out to where Rex was last at it seems he's got into a stand still fight with a group of six wolves or atleast was six, now there three left, a black, gray and a brown one left standing against a hurt Rex.
Gotta rush over there, just as I get about fifty feet away I fire a quick arrow at the gray wolf that was in the middle of jumping towards Rex, hitting it in the hind side, making it tumble out of the air right into a swing of Rex's axe taking it's head clean off. The last two wolves sprint away from us back into the tall grass at speeds I could chase but Rex is in no shape to move that fast. Speaking of Rex he's drenched in sweat and is kneeling currently breathing heavily. "Where in the bloody hell were you?" he forced out as blood dripped out of a scratch in the side of his chest. "Well I was focused on a new spell, sorry for the wait." was all I could really say after really looking at the battered form of his body.
"Suggestion move your mana onto him and focus on the cuts, it will help increase his natural regeneration." (Right, thanks) and I continue to do exactly that, as I help Rex on his feet and walk back to the cave, I slowly help heal his body. Half way on the walk back to the cave Rex was about to move by himself again but he seemed a little peeved with me about "taking my time" as he says. He's reached level five from that fight and I'm extremely close to level four myself from helping in killing the gray wolf.

Would have preferred making the wolves into allies, but I can't change the past, I can only influence the future. I showed Rex the runes and he just kinda nodded more focused on the boar leg he was currently snarfing down. Kinda feel bad about the new scar that is now under his right arm. Should've focused on watching out for him a bit more.
