Chapter 36 - Combat Assessment (1)

I look back at the annoyed Winter.

" Oh, no... Uh... I'm just trying to get to where we're supposed to go. I didn't really see where she pointed, so you know. I'm off! "

There's no way I just did that. That was quite possibly the most embarrassing thing I've ever done.

I walk quickly, trying to ignore what just happened. Please tell me no one was watching that. My reputation might turn into that of a pervert who follows girls into bathrooms...

" S-Class students! here! " I heard someone shout, so I immediately rushed over towards them without thinking about what had just happened. It was too embarrassing, and it's better to completely forget about it.

I arrived at the group and there was one other student there apart from me and Winter who was still not here.

I've seen him before, and if I remember correctly, he should be Gavin Break, a 2* hunter with the ability to manipulate heat, giving him the ability to raise or lower the temperature according to his desire. He was also the 11th place or the last ranking S class student in the original work.

He was mentioned only once or twice in the story, participating in tournaments and battles between academies and S-class students, and that's about it. I have no clue what his personality was, so I don't really know how to talk to him.

Besides, if he was looking at me like that, I know there's no way we could start a conversation. He looks at me the way Krean does, just filled with contempt, anger, and jealousy.

I mean, if you think about it, wasn't I the eleventh place in the assessment? Who was the 12th? Was it him? That's the only reason his gaze was more severe and heavy than the other students'.

Not long after, Winter joins us, making the environment heavier than it already was. There were now two people looking at me like they wanted to kill me.

" Alright, since everyone's here already, let's start. " The teacher in front of us, named Ms. Loi, stood up as she held something that looked like a remote.

She pressed a button and light suddenly engulfed them all. There were lasers going through the entire gymnasium, which looked like it was being scanned by a printer or something.

This should be the isolation scanner. A device that scans an entire area and mimics it in a space bubble that is small in size if you look from the outside. In the insed however, it completely mimics the area of the entire gymnasium.

I have no clue how it works, whether we get shrunk or what, but all I know is the bubble we were in was probably as wide as a small room when looking at the outside, but all we saw was the full gym with the same equipment from earlier.

"Alright, let's start. We can go crazy with this one as everything you see is pretty much augmented reality, whether you break it or not, it's not a real object. " Ms. Loi points at the dummies with the remote in hand. The dummies started glitching as Ms. Loi pointed at them, indicating that they were really augmented dummies, and we could do anything.

" But before anything, you three will start by fighting two droids that will be adjusted according to your strength, and you guys will show me how you'll deal with them. I already received the assessment from the other teachers, but I need a perfect evaluation for me to know how to teach you guys. "

With that being said, Gavin was the first to go, seemingly wanting to show off. Well, considering Winter was with us before this absurd mana machine, it was a smart decision. He'll get to show off against me, and his ability won't feel disappointing.

Standing in front of a 3* Droid, he lifted both of his palms, aiming at the Ki-based droid in front of him. His left hand started shining blue and his right was shining red. There was no visible formation of ice or fire, but it seemed cold enough to freeze and melt the droid standing in front of him. It was the nature of his abilities. He can't form elemental structures, but he could manipulate the heat of already existing objects.

Start!

The droid started rushing toward Gavin with full force, causing it to even cause a small dent on the ground. It was running straight towards him, but Gavin didn't move a muscle. Slowly but surely, he raised his guard and awareness, seemingly waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Eventually, it was only a few feet away from Gavin until he sat on the ground and he placed his left hand on the floor.

" Temper: Ground Freeze! " Gavin exclaims, causing his skill to form. The floor suddenly froze as the frozen ground went through a straight line going all the way to the Droid's feet, causing it to freeze together with the floor.

Gavin, who had created an opening, rushed at the frozen droid with his right hand, ready to grab its face.

Though droids are better than that. They are forms of data that are specifically designed to give the students a challenge. They might be low tier and they are forced to make mistakes here and there, but the moment they see the battle going way quicker than expected, they're going to raise their strength to compete with their opponent.

As Gavin rushed towards the frozen droid, it just lifted its feet and destroyed the frozen floor, escaping its rooted position. Gavin arrived not long after he tried to grab the droid's face, panicking in the process, looking like he didn't think that the droid would manage to escape, making him rush towards it as fast as he could.

Well, it was already obvious that that wouldn't work out. The droid saw the incoming Gavin as it flexed its arms, giving a punch straight at Gavin's stomach.

" Urk! " Gavin flew away, collapsing on the ground as he clenched his stomach.

Oh no...

Droids are meant to fight. They don't have the same compassion and critical thinking as humans. Seeing him crouching like that, the droid will only see that as an opening and rush for him.

Surely enough, the droid didn't stop there. It rushed towards Gavin and it started beating him on the ground, causing Gavin to crunch in pain. He was blocking with all his might, but he was also trying to use his left hand to freeze the droid.

Ms. Loi was watching the whole fight as she looked at the fallen Gavin, panicking as he tried to escape the wild droid. You would expect she would look worried, but she had an indifferent expression as she looked at the fight occurring ahead.

Well, I guess you need to be so to be a high-ranking hunter as well as a teacher for S-class students.

Winter was also watching the fight, but she only looked bored and unamused by Gavin's struggles.
