Chapter 26 - THEY'LL FORGET HOW I LOOK

Raine finally shifted her gaze which had been entirely focused on the night market to her palms on the table. She heaved out a deep sigh and then propped her left hand on the table with her cheeks resting on it.

By now, the waiter had already approached them and placed their orders on the table. Raine muttered a low thanks to him and then completely buried her head in her dessert. She didn't utter a single word or even spare a glance at Jedrek. She didn't know why but her earlier excitement about eating her favorite french pastries had been completely dispelled.

A thin line appeared between Jedrek's brows. He could sense something was wrong but rather than asking her, he resulted in casting a helpless gaze in her direction.

Raine could feel his heated stare on her but she completely ignored it. After a while, when she could no longer handle his persistent stare at her, she finally raised her head and frowned at him.

"What? Don't tell me now that you want my dessert after your speech on not liking sweets," her tone was soft and low but was laced with a streak of annoyance in them.

Jedrek shook his head, "It's not that."

"Then what?" Raine probed further and then gave him a raised brow.

"Nothing," he let out a small smile, "I just find your silence very unusual."

Raine huffed at his statement. She didn't bother to retort back but returned her attention to her vanilla gelato but now it tasted bland and a deep frown marred her face. After taking just a few bites, she decided to clear her thoughts first and as usual, her curiosity got the best of her.

She returned her gaze to Jedrek and inquired in a low tone, "Sorry for probing but she is?..."

A low smile hung casually on his lips when he noticed that she was referring to Asra. He picked up a napkin and then helped her to wipe out some vanilla cream on her lips before he answered, "She's Asra. We grew up together."

"Oh!!" Raine nodded at his reply. Although his answer was somewhat vague, she knew she would be intruding if she ask any further questions so she smiled gently and quietly finished her dessert.

After eating to her fill, Jedrek paid the bill and they both got ready to leave the dessert shop. As they stepped out, they were greeted by the cool evening breeze of City X. It was soothing and somewhat refreshing but since Raine was wearing very thin clothing without any jacket she shivered softly from the impact.

Noticing this, Jedrek slowly took off his jacket and carefully draped it on her thin shoulders. Raine was stunned for a moment. She knew he was cold and calm most of the time but she never expected him to be a gentleman but before she could offer her thanks she found Jedrek already pulling her towards a direction but not the direction of the car but the direction of the night market instead.

She felt dazed all of a sudden. Watching a majestic figure pull her towards an ordinary market, she didn't know what to say. Under the dim city lights, his looks felt ethereal, his pale skin only added more to his mysterious looks as his dark silky hair danced along with the cool evening breeze.

Raine could feel jeering and malicious gaze all around them. She was also confused, she didn't know which country she had saved in her past life for her to be dragged by such an outer-worldly figure to an ordinary market.

Speaking of appearance, she wondered if the appearance the people could see was the real one or not but seeing his serious expression as he carefully searched for the shop which she was staring at a while ago, she shifted her question to the back of her head and enjoyed the view instead.

She didn't notice when a small smile hung at the corner of his lips. She felt his footsteps slowed down and then he finally stood beside her and lowered his head to her ears as he spoke, "There's no need to disguise my appearance anymore. Once I leave here, they'll forget how I look."
