Josh smirked at his words and retorted cheekily, "Well, they do say you can never be too careful."
"Who? Who fucking says that? Like no one ever…!" Whisper shouted Tom back at Josh.
"Oh, sorry~. Are you not happy with your knife? Why don't you just go and get a fork, huh?" Josh took a breath.
"No! You lost so you had to get me a fork…!" Grumbled Tom.
"No, no. You asked for cutlery, what I got you is cutlery." Josh pointed at the knife that was lying on the table, "Not my fault if you're too picky and don't want to use it. Like knife lives matter, no discrimination and all that."
"Yeah? That right, huh?" Asked Tom after hearing the last sentence Josh had added on.
"Yep." Josh leaned back in his chair and cupped his hands on the back of his head and laced his fingers, he crossed his legs too.
"Then let's swap then, you shouldn't have a problem with it, should you?" Tom said as a smile began to find its way onto his features for the first time in a while.
"No, wait-" Josh began to say.
"What'd you say again? Oh, right, no discrimination and knife lives matter and whatnot." Tom interrupted as he waved his hand dismissively. "You said it, can't take it back now. And since that's that, I guess I should just help myself."
Tom then reached over and was about to grab hold of the fork that Josh had brought over for himself when Josh spoke up.
"Hey, hey. Wait a minute…" Josh started saying hurriedly, a look of slight panic on his face.
"Yes…?" Tom asked as he waited for Josh to continue his sentence and to say whatever it was he wanted to say.
Josh and Tom sat in silence for a few minutes as Josh trying to find the words to get himself out of this situation tactfully whilst Tom sat there waiting patiently for him to do so fruitlessly. Eventually, Tom lost his patience and sighed whilst breaking the silence.
"Well get on with it." Called out Tom after a while of waiting. "What is it that you want to say. Just say it."
"Yeah… I've got nothing. Well, anyway why don't you just leave this fork here and you can go get one from over there." Josh tried once again with a fake smile on his face as he once again pointed over his shoulder at the tray full of utensils.
Tom sighed once more and decided to give up, "How stubborn." He muttered under his breath with a small doting smile on his face, it was easily noticeable that Tom was surprising his smile as the corners of his lips trembled slightly but Josh pretended not to notice as he turned his gaze away from Tom's face to his slice of cake.
He quickly clutched his fork and ate a piece of the cake with it, he then smiled and began talking, "Well, anyway I've used it now, so you won't be able to use this fork now anyway.
"Hey, don't talk with your mouth full! Didn't your parents teach you that already, what if you choke, or worse, spray someone with food and saliva?" Tom shuddered and shivered at the thought, a chill travelled up his spine. "But you're not wrong…" he added on the end, his voice got quieter as he was talking so the sentence he added to the end was barely audible and Josh couldn't quite catch it.
"What was that?" Josh asked as he shoved another fork full of cake into his mouth.
"Well nothing much," As Tom said that his eyes sparkled as an idea struck him, "that is, I was just saying that I wouldn't mind using the fork even now." Tom thought about how he'd worded that and took a breath before trying again, "What I mean is that obviously I'd rather use the fork now than before."
Throughout Tom's blabbering Josh sat there silently as he shovelled cake into his mouth with the fork, and when Tom was finished speaking he only stared blankly at him with a questioning look in his eyes.
Tom closed his eyes as he sighed once again, he then slapped his cheeks lightly and opens his eyes once again.
"What're you even talking about?" Asked Josh as he finished swallowing the heaps of food he'd just had in his mouth which had made him look like a squirrel storing nuts in its mouth for carrying to place in storage.
"Never mind…" Tom said as he let out a deep breath, his eyebrows slightly furrowed.
"No, hold on, wait… were you trying to scare me out of using this fork by acting like some gay creep?" Josh questioned, and as he was saying that his expression gradually began breaking until he suddenly burst out laughing as he finished talking, "Are- Are you, wheeze, serious?"
"…Just forget it!" Tom exclaimed, his cheeks tinged slightly pink at this point.
"No, no, no. What about all the dirt you've got on me. I finally have something against you now, I can't just let this opportunity pass me by!" Exclaimed Josh, his eyes shining so brightly you'd have thought he'd won the lottery.
"It's- It's not a big deal. Just drop it." Tom said hastily, his cheeks only becoming a darker hue of red, his eyebrows becoming more furrowed and his embarrassment becoming more clearly shown.
"It's not a big deal, he says, just drop it, he says. Please, I think not! This is like, my one big chance, when will I get a chance like this in the future? I won't ever be able to forgive myself!" Josh kept blabbering on as Tom listened impatiently.
Tom could only sigh after hearing this, he knew perfectly well how stubborn Josh was so he decided it'd be best if he just gave up, so that's what he did. "It's really not that deep." Tom muttered under his breath.
Josh kept talking about how this was an opportunity and things like that as Tom decided to pay him no mind as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. Tom then opened some apps that he usually used and passed the time playing games and scrolling through social media as Josh kept talking and stuffing his face full of cake.
When Josh was done with both of those things he finally noticed what Tom was doing, "What're you up to?" He asked.
"Nothing much." Tom replied as he closed his phone once again and shoved it back into his pocket as he realised Josh was no longer spouting nonsense.
Josh looked around briefly before a questioning look appeared on his face, "You aren't going to eat that?" Josh asked as he pointed at Tom's slice of cake that he'd especially ordered, "Not going to drink that either?" He also asked as he pointed at Tom's specially ordered drink.
"Nope, you can have it." Tom answered nonchalantly.
"…" Josh sighed, he then realised something, "Hey! Isn't this why I'm always taking ages in cafes and coffee shops?"
"What ever do you mean?" Asked Tom sarcastically as he looked at random things around the shop.
"You always end up making me eat whatever you order because you never eat or drink any of it!" Josh complained.
"You buy it anyway, and you have a black pit for a stomach. It's alright either way, it doesn't matter." He stated matter of factly.
"Yeah, I guess…" Josh replied.
