Chereads / Holy Lich / Chapter 2 - Samantha

Chapter 2 - Samantha

"Ahh, that was the day I turned into a lich, the day I felt alone and the umpty injustice in this world, this would rank top three in my most unpleasant memories. As I looked back down ahead and adjusted the bindle on my shoulder before continuing to trot aimlessly in this no-man's land.

No man's land also known as the Land of the Unholy or Outcast where creatures hear has already abandoned the light and seek only darkness mostly for dark reasons such as revenge, vengeance, or power. A forbidden land due to the dark miasma which fogs the entire land, where only those with strong willpower can resist but a moment of weakness would make them fall prey to its corruption turning them into a mindless beast that only knows slaughter and massacre.

However, to those that have already embraced the darkness such as Rupert, this place ends up being a comfortable and relaxed environment for them.

"AHH, NO, JOHN, DON'T GO! PLEASE SAVE ME!" as a faint sound of a women's scream could be heard in the distance.

"Hmm, a human this deep in the land of the unholy" I muttered under my breath looking in the direction of where the voice came from.

"Hmm, that's Cerberus territory" I hesitated for a moment before turning back, however just as I was about to walk, another memory flashed through my mind

"Rupert, my disciple, you must no matter what happens to you, if you know that someone is in need of help, never turn them away" my master weakly spoke to me.

My master was known as the holy decipherer, by looking at the signs given by the holy spirit, he was tasked to decipher the meaning of the signs given by God.

However, recently, my master suddenly went crazy paranoid and went on rambling about gibberish no one could understand not even the other holy decipherer could understand what he deciphered or where he got the signs from.

As my past self half-heartily agreed with him "yes master, I understand" tearing up for the loss of the only family that I knew since he picked me up back where he found me as a newborn somewhere my master refused to disclose to me.

Seeing as if I was not taking his words seriously, his pale white as sheet face gained a tint of redness and rasped "NEVER TURN THEM AWAY, Never Turn Them Away, never turn them away…" as he repeated these words over and over again, his voice got softer and softer till no life was left in him.

Those were his final words and I honoured them with grave seriousness knowing that his final words have to be due to the signs he's seen. After that, with his words in mind, never turned away any that needed my genuine help, after all, there were a few times that some tried to take advantage of my kindness and for those who did, he ignore them.

'Could it be that master was referring to this situation?' thought Rupert after all it was the first time in a while since he ever helped anyone no, it would be more accurate to say that he has not helped anyone since he turned into a lich.

After thinking it over for a moment, I decided that I should continue to honour my master's last word and made a quick dash over to Cerberus territory and towards the cry for help.

[Samantha's point of view]

My name is Samantha, I was born in Arbington Village, a simple village on the outskirts of the White Wind Kingdom under the rule of the Holy Phoenix Empire. Which is on Holy Grounds also known as the holy continent. I came to the demon continent to find the greatest evil, Pope Rupert the lich that terrorised the world. However, to our family, he would always be the greatest one under the stars, that is because I am the descendant of Alex.

One of the nine Cardinals that were executed during the plot against pope Rupert. Luckily, like the other families of the nine cardinals were hidden away just in time for the execution and due to the ruckus caused by pope Rupert, they did not have the manpower to search and dig us all up.

Although, some of us were still found by them and killed off and others were killed off by none other than pope Rupert himself during his rampage. Strangely enough, none of our ancestors hated pope Rupert about it. After all, he was consumed by evil, and we always knew that deep down inside of him was still the ever-growing compassionate pope he was.

Now, finally, after thousands of years of searching and exploring new lands hoping to find him. That was we found this new continent that is only visible on the darkest and longest of nights. Where the sun only rises for half the supposed time and the moon lingers for twice as long.

With his personality and habits passed down from generation to generation, we believe that pope Rupert might be on this continent. Hence, we continuously found ways and tricks to explore this place.

Until about two hundred years ago, we managed to use alchemy to process a new material that could help filter out most of the miasma we called it - mask.

The mask was what helped us explore more of this continent and what allowed us to finally enter the inner area of the continent however, the deeper we go in, the thicker the miasma. This causes us to burn a larger amount of these precious masks as we wore double or even triple layers of them.

At the same time, since the holy war about ten thousand years ago, we have yet to see any signs of him causing many to have left the cause of finding and reuniting back with him.

No, to be more accurate, there are only about 20 of us left 'old guards' that are still waiting and believing in him waiting for his return. The rest of the people are only mercenaries or treasure hunters that come to this unexplored dangerous continent hoping to strike it rich by gaining an ancient relic and auctioning it off to the nobles.

Regretfully, my exploration has to end here with this 3 headed hound, the gatekeeper to the core region of this continent. This was the deepest we have ever explored and the most dangerous one yet. Sadly, it ends up with me dying without me seeing the pope that I have always dreamt of meeting.

As I closed my eyes and accepted my fate, I heard a voice, "Infinitum bone cage!"
