Chapter 6 - Disaster looms behind

Chapter six

She had finished mopping and cleaning up his office.

She walked inside her office and sight Kevin on her seat, his head bent with gaze so focused on the magazine he held in his hand.

"Sir your office is cleaned". She announced not minding the way he crossed his legs on her desk.

She turned to go when she suddenly remembered the files on her desk. The remaining files she had not completed were laying there and recklessly staring at her.

she wondered if he had noticed them or pretending not to have noticed. It was obvious, and not noticing it could only mean he had become blind.

She cursed herself silently for being such a fool, for not hiding it away from him at first.

She had no clue he would come to her desk not to talk of sitting on her seat.

The tension came on her again not knowing what her next move should be, the silence from her boss wasn't helping her ease the feeling she was having either.

She head to the toilet so as to drop the buckets she used for cleaning, this time at a fast pace.

"Myra". Kevin called out calmly.

She had barely taken the third step when she heard his voice.

"Sir". She responded and dropped the bucket, while settling down to the fact that she had gotten herself in a big trouble.

"What are my files doing on your table?" He asked, his tone was harsh but calm.

The silence grew all over Myra as she stood right before there dumbfounded with no one around to defend her. "I tried my best to_," she started.

"Tried your best to what?" He interrupted sharply, " Act smart?" He laughed.

Somehow, Myra couldn't miss the evil tone in it.

"You can never outsmart me Myra no matter how much you try to," he smirked.

He stood up and with three long strides, he was standing before her,"I've had the experience long before you chose to work here". He chuckled softly.

His last statement angered Myra who was trying to be at her very best.

Kelvin has always tried to demean and make her feel inferior to him at any chance he got.

Kelvin was only doing it to her intentionally and someone apart from her needs to tell him that. It was turning into an everyday routine which to Myra was excessive.

"Now I want these files to be completed before the end of today".

She took in a deep breath trying to understand what her boss really wanted from her. "Yes sir". She replied without looking at him.

He turned to go but stopped almost immediately. He looked at the desk as if trying to remember something. "When is my next appointment?"

Myra rushed off to her desk as she tried to switch on her computer while Kelvin stood in front of her door awaiting her response.

His stares kept burning deep into her skin. And each time she looked up to confirm, she would find him looking elsewhere.

"Have you found it?" He asked and it seemed like he was directly looking at her this time.

"Just a minute". She felt she had saved the file last night. The impatient sound from Kevin made her hands a little shaky.

She immediately remembered she had forgotten to fix back the flash she took home.

Rooting out the flash from her bag she fixed it into the system and started her search again.

"Can't you just do something correctly once in your life". Kelvin complained.

Myra didn't know if responding to his complaint would worsen the whole thing or help, she decided to just shut her mouth. "Your next appointment is tomorrow sir".

"And tomorrow happens to be weekend, right?"

"Yes sir," she whirled around to look at him.

He stared for a while, "Alright," and with that, he went out.

This is her first time having one hour of quiet without her boss on her neck, she wished it could happen on daily basis. Probably he didn't react today because of the files she couldn't complete, she thought to herself as she looked over at the files again.

"I hope you're not thinking of doing that?" She could now recognize the nagging voice of her boss from anywhere, though it startled her.

"I'm waiting for you in my office. Come and get the files I kept aside for the work of today". He reluctantly left her doorpost.

Myra felt the banging in her head just like yesterday, checking her time she noticed it was noontime.

She sighed at the thought that it was a few hours till she had the weekend to herself. Her first instinct was to overreact by protesting but the thought of the weekend vibes and relaxation which hovered around her head calmed her down.

"These are the files". He pointed at the table noticing she stood at his front door.

Myra swallowed harder at the sight of the files he had pointed out to her, it was twice what he had given to her altogether yesterday.

"Myra!" Kelvin called again. His voice broke through her trance and made her curse herself for losing focus.

She carefully carried the heap of files and headed straight to her office. She could feel the line as they marred on her forehead, she felt stressed and tired.

"Excuse me, sir?" Myra stopped herself from taking another step, "Can you permit me to go home earlier today? I'm not feeling too well". She concluded.

"You'll go when you're done with those files, Myra. And the leftover from yesterday". He finished in a voice that left no room for more conversation.

Myra knew when not to disturb as she walks to her office fuming in anger. Her mind couldn't conjure all the worst-case scenarios not when she had done nothing wrong that's intentional.

She was left with 3 files and it was almost 6 pm.

Excitement grew in her as she had never felt this type of accomplishment. Myra had barely started the last file when her office phone rang.

She gave a moaning sound when she noticed the caller was no other than her boss.

"Did you do as I had instructed?"

"Yes sir- I mean I'm almost through sir". She replied feeling already irritated from the stress he had to make her pass through, she found it hard to forgive him.

"Good, get ready tomorrow, we're going for that appointment together".

His last statement sounded like a movie to her, her boss was out of his mind.

She decided to stay calm, "But sir, I don't work on weekends. No staff does, this week has been so tiring for me," Myra tried her best to explain herself and hoped it didn't fall on deaf ears.

"So what am I supposed to do about that?" He snorted, "Do you expect me to go alone when I have a secretary?"

"No sir, I didn't mean that just that this-".

Kevin cut her off, "Myra if you're tired of your job tell me and I won't tell you this again". He warned her sternly.

She didn't know what else to do, her boss intentionally kept her in a position where escape was inevitable.

This was impromptu and he expected her to walk into it with him. "I'll do it, sir". She responded swallowing up her anger.

Her realization came up to the fact that her boss never liked her, he hated her and tried his possible best to kick her out of the company.

Opposing him would only give him the opportunity to fire her so she decided to play according to his game only with caution.

This company is the only means of survival she has.

So, she would refused to let anger control her sense of thought.

"You can take your leave now and bring back the files when you're through," he finished and the phone went off.

She sighed, fed up of everything

At least having the remaining day to herself was enough. She couldn't wait to get home.

She packed her stuff into her bag.

.

Getting home was one of the most stressful yet happy moods she could ever imagine. She could make dinner and get set for the next day.

The sound of the bell startled her for a moment. She peeped through the tiny hole from her door. She stared at the stranger for a moment before she opened the door.

"Who are you?" She stared, confused.

The guy bowed slightly, "Sorry ma'am, Mr. Kelvin sent me to deliver this to you, " The boy who looked younger than her said.

She thanked him after signing the parcel and shuts the door.

The parcel seemed heavy. She opened it without a second thought.

There sat in it a red gown. She took it out and look all over. The gown seemed like the most beautiful dinner gown she had ever seen.

She picked the little note attached to it which read:

"Be on time, no excuse this time. My chauffeur will pick you up tommorow."

Why did he had to get her a gown. She could have taken care of that.

Why did he have to be nice to her when he was so wicked to her in office?

Myra threw the package away. She wouldn't wear it! She wouldn't!
