Chapter nine
Myra Rogers stared at nothingness for some minutes that actually seemed like an hour.
She woke up earlier that day, maybe it was because she slept earlier the other night.
But a lot of things have been on her mind. She remembered what her boss had done to her on Saturday intentionally and she reminded herself of the fact that she had also treated him somehow the previous Saturday.
It was just like Karma came in the form of humans.
But she didn't know if she was supposed to quit or not.
The ringing of her phone jotted her out of her thoughts.
She searched blindly around her for it, on the table. Her hand grabbed it suddenly.
She stretched it up and looked at the screen. It was her mom. It felt like she had seen her forever.
"Hi Mom," she placed it on speaker and kept it beside her ear on the bed.
"Hi, I thought I should call you at this moment because I didn't want to disturb your work. But I hope I'm not disturbing you at the moment?"
She sobbed harder, "No, you are not disturbing."
" Ok," she went silent for a moment, " Your brother needs to pay his tuition fee. And I didn't sell enough flowers last week. I'm worried."
Myra sighed, " Mom, I just started working," she recalled with bitterness.
She needed no one to tell her she needed to work harder no matter what comes her way.
Her mother has tried her best in bringing her up. Myra had only lacked but she didn't stop schooling.
Why wouldn't she do more for her family?
Though, she knew life might have been better for them if her father was alive.
"Yes, I know," her mother fumbled for word, "I'm just saying, perhaps you could get an advance salary."
Myra sucked in breathe. Advance salary? From the Devil?
It felt like her mother had just asked her to convince a lion.
Well, it was very different.
The difference was that Myra could try to get a lion to talk to her but for Kevin? It would be as hard as bringing out blood from the stone.
"Mom, I don't think that can be possible," she said quickly, though she hated it.
Her mother sighed, "Alright, later then," she finished and hung up.
Myra closed her eyes and inhaled a signing breath. Should she try and see if there would be a positive response?
But Myra was very scared of what Kevin would do.
Well, it doesn't matter. She would do it nevertheless. Myra would try her best to make sure her brother doesn't have to stop schooling.
She got up immediately and went for a long shower. She settled on a suit with its trousers and made her hair into a ponytail.
She ate some cheesecake and hurried out of the house.
The number one rule she had derived from Kevin having worked for him for a week is to be punctual.
And Myra didn't want to start the week up with a bad note from her boss.
And yes, she needed to drop the apology letter.
She made sure to write three different apology letters a day before. If Kevin was bent on tossing it aside as he had always done, he wouldn't be left with a choice this time around.
Kevin had not been talking about the apology note anyway but she knew he would ask sooner. He could have been waiting for the right time to use it as a provocative means.
Kevin Smith was wicked and well tactical.
He wasn't at all the guy she could wish for. He was more than her. Well, she wondered who could be his girlfriend.
Myra got to the office in no time. She was earlier and only a few had gotten to the company.
She used the opportunity to tidy up Kevin's room before he came and started making unnecessary demands.
When it was nine, Myra was done but Kevin was still nowhere to be found.
Kevin was not used to coming late to work. Did something happen to him?
Myra walked out of Kevin's office and decided to get busy. She decided to go and see Rose.
Since Rose was from a higher department perhaps she would know why Kevin was absent from the office that morning.
She decided to take the elevator to the second floor where Rose was.
She stepped inside, awed by the number of workers in the elevator. She walked in nevertheless and moved aside.
The ladies seemed to be deep in thought that they didn't even realize she had walked in.
"I told you he resigned himself!" A lady argued strongly.
" Yes, we know but I don't really think that was it. I believe he was threatened!" Another contributed.
" Who would dare threaten the CEO of Shining Hope!" A deep voice argued.
Myra whipped her head towards them, curious and confused. Were they talking about Kevin Smith?
"What then can you say about the secretaries that were fired."
"I believe they took part in the conspiracy. The company wouldn't let them off if they did nothing wrong," the lady who seemed to be at the extreme said as if the thing happened in front of her. She seemed so sure of herself.
Myra was watching them now, with curious eyes.
"This is what happened. The CEO resigned before the whole plot got worse. They had to do it to protect the image they have been keeping for years," the lady voiced out again, " Do you know something?"
The other lady raised a skeptical brow at her, " Yes," she egg her on.
" I heard," the lady's voice went so quiet that Myra had to strain her ears before she could hear, "that they embezzled a great amount of money out of the company's money. The CEO and their secretaries."
" What!" The lady exclaimed.
Even Myra's mouth went open in agape, her eyes went wider and darker with shock.
The guy standing with them suddenly looked towards Myra's way, "That's the new secretary," he whispered in a way that even Myra heard him.
Eyes turned towards her.
Laugh followed.
"She will be getting fired one day," she bashed her eyelid at her as if daring her into a fight.
Myra braced herself up and took a deep breath.
She felt like fighting seriously. She shouldn't let this go by like that.
Just because her boss was wicked doesn't mean they would go about embezzling money from the company.
Should she fight or not?
