He stood up straight from the brick wall when he knew Abigail had left with a maidservant. He then went off to his home so that he could feed and water his horse. He poured the water into the watering trough and threw in some hay sprinkled with a little grain.
Kane stood still by the wooden fence he had the feeling of uneasiness that something was wrong. Looking up at the sky he was so wrapped up with his horse he didn't realize how dark the clouds were getting.
"A storm is rolling in so quickly?" The clouds formed into bigger clouds in seconds they rumbled loudly causing, it to vibrate underneath his feet. "This isn't good? If the sun is no longer out the vampires can come out as they please!"
A tremendous gust of wind blew over him almost knocking him off his feet and a sound of a disgustingly wicked laugh was heard up into the sky.
"Witches! Abigail is in trouble?!" He ran into his home searching. "I need to find my cloak quickly?" He searched boxes, cabinets, and under his mattress but it was nowhere to be seen.
"Where is it!" Kane said in an aggravating tone and suddenly he then got an idea and ran to the small barn and again searched around until he found it inside a barrel buried underneath some straw. He brushed it down getting, all the dust off and, put it on.
"Sorry girl but you'll have to eat later we're going for a ride." He opened the wooded fence gate and hopped up onto his horse's bareback. He needed to save his energy just in case he needed to fight his way through to get to her.
He rode in a full gallop through the forest towards the castle. He wasn't sure what to expect when he got there but he can't be frightened knowing that he could possibly die at the hands of humans or the witches. At a distance, he could see the tip of the castle peeking through the tall trees.
The whole sky flashed brightly over the earth and roared like an angry beast.
He can't let Abigail die? He thought to himself but what was the reason? Why did he want her to live and to protect her? He doesn't know her all that well he didn't love her but yet he wanted to protect her from all the dangers of the world?
He slid off his horse and quickly jumped over the stone wall and quickly but calmly walked up to the front entrance in a professional manner.
"Hey! How did you get in here?" A guard had spotted him from the entrance. He continued to walk without a word and kept his head slightly down to keep his face hidden in the hood of the cloak.
Kane didn't want to hurt them badly but a little push to the ground wouldn't hurt. That was if he controlled his strength. Two guards stood in front of him with stern expressions not tempting to allow him to pass and enter the castle.
"Show yourself! No one is ever to enter the castle grounds!" One of the guards shouted into his face.
He grinned and tittered feeling unpleased with the man standing in front of him for their first greeting. "That's too bad... But I promised to keep someone safe?"
The two men looked back at each other confused. Humans are so stupid? He rolled his eyes with a sign.
"Now get out of my way? I'm trying to save someone's life!" He caught them off guard when he pushed them both against the castle walls putting them in a short daze. He opened the castle doors.
"Get back here you trespasser!"
Kane ran through the castle halls while trying to catch her scent but it was no use there were too many people with different scents in one building. Times like these he's grateful to have great hearing he could listen to any sort of sound from a distance.
When he heard a sound of a chair scraping against the floor behind him he quickly turned around towards the guards who were chasing him. He dodged their outstretched arms and jumped onto a side table passing them all.
"Men stop him before it's too late!" A guard shouted and all the men followed his command and chased after him.
Kane stretch his arm out in front of him and pushed the door open. His eyes immediately landed on Abigail her breathing was unsteady she couldn't breathe. Those stupid witches! Kane felt a burst of anger erupt inside of him the witches were messing with an eighteen-year-old girl who was also, the king's daughter and couldn't care any less.
"Who are you and how dare you burst into my castle!" The king demanded.
"Your majesty?" He bowed his head and knelt on one knee the guards stood behind him in respect of the king's presents. "Your majesty I'm here to help your daughter?"
"And how would you do that?"
"There is a witch that's putting lady Abigail in this position where she can't breathe!"
"How is that possible they can't touch her unless..." The king turned to his daughter in disbelief. "Abigail? You didn't, did you?"
Abigail struggled in her seat to catch a breath and looked up at the king with tears welling up in her eyes.
"Your majesty there's no time to be angry at your daughter! I can go and kill the witch that is causing this? But you need to take her to her chamber she needs to be comfortable and immediate, rest?"
"How can you? A man like you kill a witch?"
"Don't underestimate me, your majesty? I don't mean to be disrespectful to your majesty but take her immediately!" He ran through the guards and quickly made it out of the castle entrance. He wasn't quite sure where the witch really was but they had a hard to, miss stench that werewolves could pick up anywhere.
"I should get on the roof? It'll be better to find her that way." He climbed the side of the castle walls only to slip back down onto the ground. "I'll jump then?" He looked around for anyone around when it was clear he stepped back a few feet and jumped onto the roof and started to slip off the edge.
"Wow?!" He quickly caught himself in time and pulled himself back up. "This is one steep roof? I should be more careful? Now to find that witch?" He walked across steadily and kept a close eye out he can't risk getting zapped by its wicked magic.
"She's mine all mine!" The witch laughed hysterically unaware that he was behind her.
She's mine! He thought to himself once again and didn't know why? She wasn't his and she never will be he's never felt or wanted to love a woman so why is he thinking these things?
"You've messed with the wrong girl when I'm still breathing!" He growled.
The witch gasped with a quick turn before she could do any magic he quickly ran behind her and wrapped his arm around her neck and snapped it in half. The sky then stopped rumbling and flashing and cleared up the sun shined once again.
He dropped the witch's body down at the front entrance where guards were waiting and made his way up into Abigail's chamber using his sense of hearing and smell. Kane felt a little shaky from what he had just done to that witch but he had no regrets she was a witch not an ordinary human and he saved someone else's life doing so.
He brushed himself off and fixed his cloak, talking a deep breath he knocked on her door.
"What is it!" It was a woman's voice that was unfamiliar to him but he knew there were others inside.
"I'm the man from earlier I spoke to the king?" He said.
The door opened slightly and a young girl peeked through.
"Gabriella let the young sir in?"
Kane's heart skipped hearing that sweet voice that he knew belonged to Abigail. He slowly inhaled and exhaled and hoped to not seem or sound nervous and walked inside her chamber when the youngest daughter of king Eliot opened the door wider.
"My lady are you alright now?" He asked glancing up to see her laying in bed without exposing his face.
"I'm doing just fine thanks to you?" Abigail smiled. "Father, may I talk with him privately?"
His eyes shot open widener and his body stiffened up from the word privately. Why did she want to speak with him?
"If you want but make it quick I want to speak with him as well?"
Oh no now the king wanted to speak with him! What has he done to deserve such treatment he just wanted to see if Abigail was alright and make his way back home?
When the room was now empty with just him and Abigail he stood in silence waiting to be spoken to.
"I see you've found your cloak?" Abigail pointed out.
"Yes, my lady when I realized something was wrong I quickly searched and found it back at home in a barrel underneath some straw?"
"Is keeping your identity a secret that important? You won't even tell me your name?"
"Yes, can I be honest my lady?"
"Yes of course?"
He had to tell her the truth at some point even very little won't hurt right?
"The truth is... If you see who I am at this moment or even randomly in the village if you plan to sneak out that is? You would recognize who I am, immediately?"
"How would I recognize you if I've never seen your face?" Abigail became confused by his words.
"That is not true you've seen me plenty of times you just don't know it or how."
"I still don't understand? How can it be possible?"
"My lady if you ever decide to someday walk out that gate and walk through the village you will know who I am by my face and if you'd like I'll tell you my name?" He said almost feeling wary of his own words.
"Really! If I recognize you, I'll get your name someday?" Abigail grew excited almost jumping out of her bed it made Kane feel some sort of way he's never felt before since the day he killed his parents. It was some sort of happiness that made his heart feel good? But that darkness was still there and it would always be because that is who he was meant to be he was a beast who can never have what any average human had… Love.
"My lady you should rest now and I should get going his Majesty is waiting?"
"Oh yes, I guess your right? Thank you again, young sir, for saving me?" Abigail gave a small smile and slipped further into her covers and laid down.
Now he had to speak with the king? What could be the reason? "It had to be about the witch?" He whispered to himself.
"Your majesty? What was it you wanted to speak with me about?" He stood at the entrance of the door at a distance from a chair with its back facing him but he knew king Eliot was sitting in it waiting.
"Come have a seat?" The king said.
Kane did what he was told and sat down on a chair that was a few feet from the desk.
"So tell me... How did you catch and kill that witch by yourself and not get touched by her magic?"
"Well, your majesty you never want to fight a witch because you'll lose no matter what so you sneak up on them from the back and catch them off guard and snap their necks?"
"How did you know my daughter was in danger?"
"I was home caring for my horse when I noticed the dark sky and a witch flew over my head laughing and I noticed it was going in the direction of the castle so I quickly got on my horse and rode here."
"Are you the reason my daughter broke the spell?"
"What?" What was he getting himself into this wasn't good the king could think that it is his fault even if he tells him the truth.
"I want to know why Abigail broke the spell? Was it because of you... A man!" The king surprised him by suddenly standing up and a quick turnaround smacking his palms against the desk.
He has never been afraid of humans but the man in front of him frightened him in a way he thought was impossible. The king was someone who was a nice guy who cared for his people but his daughters were the most important to him especially if it was about their safety.
"No of course not your majesty! She can't love me if she doesn't know me?"
"Who said anything about love?" The king said with gritted teeth.
Kane was now confused he clearly heard the king ask if Abigail touched the gate because of him being a man? Wouldn't that mean she touched it because of the love she had for him? But he couldn't tell him that it could get him killed if he dared to speak to him like that but it was quite funny to him as he continued to think about it. Abigail did touch the gate because of him It wasn't because she loved him but to save his life even though she didn't know who he was.
"Your majesty forgive me for saying, love, I just thought incorrectly and got the wrong idea?"
He watched as the king stood up straight and softened his hard gaze.
"I thank you for saving my daughter Abigail but I do not want you to enter my castle again I want you to come back tomorrow morning and say your final goodbyes is that understood?"
"Yes, your majesty."
He exited the castle gate and went to his horse all he wanted to do was go home and rest after the long day that was finally coming to an end.
"Well, that didn't go so well?" He said to himself. "Come on girl we're going home."
