Chapter 7 - The Birth Of The Beast

Mia listened with keen interest as she wanted to know every inch about his background. Elijah continued to tell her his story; how he had become the beast he is now.

"When I regained my consciousness, I had bite marks all over my body. I looked as if I had being feasted upon. The pain was unbearable. I wished I had died on that day. But the was the least of my problems then. I realized that I was in the middle of the hive of coven of vampires. My father had told me stories of how they used to terrorize the people when I was a only a little boy. I always thought it was just a bed time story until I stood in there scared to death."

He would occasionally grunt as he continued speaking. He could still feel the pain like it all happened just yesterday. When Mia finished her breakfast Elijah escorted her back to the room where he had taken her to change. "You must be tired, sleep for a while. I will continue when you wake up".

Back in Grotlik, Miss Elsa receives a mail from Oakwood College of Fine Arts. "It's being just 3 days since she left and she is writing home to me. She might have missed me", she thought to herself as she opened the letter. Suddenly the smiles on her face disappeared as she read the content of the letter. Her world came crashing down on her so fast that she didn't know what to do.

"Oakwood College of Fine Arts,

Oakwood.

May 6, 1990

To

Miss Elsa Portman,

Grotlik.

Dear Miss Elsa,

My heart is filled with sadness as I write this letter to you. We have reasons to believe that your daughter Mia Portman was killed last night because of an unfortunate incident. We would like you to come to the school for proper clarification and due process. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Vice Chancellor,

Arnold Jefferson."

She fell on her knees as she continued reading. "Was it wrongfully addressed to me?", she wondered as she tried to figure out what was happening. "No this cannot be", she shouted and shouted on top of her voice. Mia was the only family she had since her husband died. Her world was lost, she had no one left to live for.

Mia slept peacefully in the lavished bed in the room. She slept like a baby for she had being tired from running through the forest the previous night with no sleep the entire night.

When she woke up, she rushed back into the hall. She was so eager to hear the story to the end. She didn't want to waste any time. But it looked like Elijah was nowhere near the house. There was silence everywhere. She could only hear the hoots from the owls from behind the house.

"Elijah! Elijah!! Elijah!!! She yelled and yelled but there was complete silence".

Mia had grown fond of Elijah and his weird nature after they 'zinged' and as such was ready for whatever was to happen. It looked like there wasn't even an iota of fear left in her.

She heard something call onto her name. She looked around but there was nobody. "Let's play a game. Find me and I will tell you what happened next". Mia looked around confused. The voice she had wasn't really coming from anywhere. It was in her head.

Mia searched every part of the house she had being to since she came to the house but he was still nowhere to be found. She heard him again in her thoughts. "I am closer than you think Mia". She bolted to the end of the hall. She could smell him now. "He must be closer", she thought as she opened door after door with hopes of finding him in one of them.

There he was sitting in the ballroom with a feast prepared to celebrate the night. He stood up as Mia approached him. "Please have a sit", he said as he positioned the chair for her to sit on.

Elijah seemed like a master chief who knew his way around the kitchen. While eating Mia could not take her mind of the most obvious question. Where was he getting all these foodstuff from. Just like when he had served her breakfast Elijah smiled.

He served her dinner on one of the finest plates she had seen in her entire life. He then poured a glass of wine. Mia admired him as he served her. "Such a gentleman", she said as she knew there was no way she could possibly hide her thoughts from him. He continued his story as she ate.

"All hope was lost for me. I prayed that I would die and join my family where ever they were. In the stars or beyond the universe; far from the reach of pain and suffering. But then the leader of the pack walked up to me and looked me in the eye.

He could sense the fear in my eyes. 'Such an innocent boy', he said as he walked around me."

For the first time since he begun telling his story Elijah grinned as he continued.

"He held his wrist above me, bit it with his long fangs and then forced the blood into my mouth. I tried to resist it but I was too weak to move. He continued to look me in the eye till I felt dizzy and fell into a deep trance.

I woke up healed; all the bite marks had disappeared. I had been given a second chance at life or so I thought. In time I realized I had being burdened with the same curse as they carried. I had been turned into the first human vampire."

Mia burst into tears. She could no longer hold herself together. She took the bottle of wine on the table and gulped down the remnant of its content. She felt really sorry for him. She took another bottle from the chest nest to the cupboard. She opened it and drank till she could drink no more.

Elijah realized she could barely hold her feet down to the ground. She was too drank. She carried her on his arms upstairs to the room he had designated to her, laid her comfortably in her bed.

"Stay here a little longer with me", Mia requested as he was about to leave the room.

The sky was lite with beautiful stars unlike the previous night. Elijah sang softly as he watched the stars through the window. Mia enjoyed his singing so much. She held his hand kissed him on the wrist. Moments later when she had fallen deeply asleep, he covered her with a huge blanket for the night was cold in the woods.

Elijah sat wondering to himself. He felt happy for the first time in a long time. He was madly in love with her. He had never felt love but anguish since his family perished by the hands of the same beings that made him who he is. He roared as he turned into the beast. He dashed into the forest far behind the house to hunt for game to prepare food for his guest the next day.
