Chapter 3 - 6:00 AM

They ran for one or two minutes straight. Half a kilometer to go now. Only thirty paces more. Their hearts were beating faster than ever, with adrenaline and all the pacing. They couldn't hear properly, but they heard the sharp click of metal together. They didn't stop. Then they heard the click again and then a loud whine. They looked behind while running and saw one of wolves caught in a bear trap and wounded at its leg. The other one was still running towards them. It was still half-a-mile or so away. Then wham! John was down. A bear trap had caught his left leg too. He dropped his gun. Wendy unclipped the smoke ball and tossed it down. She pulled up John over her right shoulder. They hadn't walked for more than twenty paces when John was down again. Wendy pushed herself up and dragged John on the muddy grass of winter. The wolf might had been thirty running steps away from them when they had reached the fence.

She went out through the clipped hole of the fence and handed John her gun. John reloaded the gun while wincing with pain, as he laid side-faced and Wendy started dragging him through the hole. John fired six shots blindly and accordingly, hit nothing. John crawled out and told Wendy to put the separated fencing back together on the gate again. She held the cut part and gave it a shove, pulling her grip away, onto the fence hole. John sat up. The wolf was hardly ten paces away, when John pulled out the bottle out of his bag, uncorked it and poured it on the fence. The fence crackled and the wolf stopped right before touching the fence. John looked at his watch. which read 6:07. The wolf looked straight at Wendy, growled at them and snickered. Then it went away, leaving them with nothing but silence.

John and Wendy laid on the ground panting like overworked beasts in a circus.

John, barely able to breathe, now chuckled.

Wendy said, " What?"

John replied, " Am I alive? Or didn't you just avoid electrocution?"

Wendy laughed, with the little breath she had left. She replied, " Same reason I'm not worried about your dropped gun, donkey.", held up her hands in the air, " woolen gloves. Next diving thing.", she finished laughing. They took their time laughing and just lying their on the ground.

Then Wendy got up and started dragging her brother towards their car.
