Chapter 34 - Physicality (Part 1)

Jacob walked over to Sasori while waving. Sasori waved in return at his approaching friend. "Hey Jacob. How are you doing?" Sasori gave Jay a High Five as he arrived.

"I'm doing okay, just been so bored sitting in the dorms the whole time. Mrs Ferg wouldn't even let us out of our rooms. She said it was something about the rooms being safer then the living room or something, but I told her no one was here to endanger us, but she just walked away and closed my door. I am so happy to be out of that room." Jacob said energetically as he had been anticipating the hand-to-hand combat class.

"That sounds rough. I went to the basics of magic class with Professor Benoit but when I got back to the room I was so tired from all the information that I fell asleep and only woke up now." He said while having a big yawn and stretching his arms above his head. "I thought I was going to be late for a second."

"Was it that bad. I remember some of my friends saying it was bad, but they didn't fall asleep." He said while yawning back, "Oh and stop yawning you are making me yawn too. The professor should be here soon."

Professor O'Brien walked through the portal and looked around until he found the hand-to-hand combat class. He was the young man who had assessed Jay. He had ginger hair, a small moustache, and brown eyes. He walked up to the class wearing a long pair of black pants with black work shoes. He had a long white sleeve shirt on but had rolled up the sleeves to his elbows.

"Morning ladies and gentlemen. My name is Professor O'Brien, and I will be taking you for hand-to-hand combat today. Professor Nara was supposed to take this class along with swordsmanship, but he is quite busy at the moment, so I have taken over for the rest of the week. However, he will be in charge of training you all at some point this year. Right then, can everyone please follow me through the portal to the training centre."

Professor O'Brien turned around and walked to the portal and the group of students followed in two lines. Once they were through they walked across the grounds of the school towards the training grounds. They were 2km away from the school, so some of the students got tired before they even reached the training grounds. The training grounds was a circular platform that was elevated slightly off the ground. There were white lines and circles drawn on the platform which represent fighting arenas.

The platform was bare ground with not a strand of grass visible. The students that had fallen back arrived at the platform panting. "Sorry, professor.. is there any water here?" A tall and skinny boy with light brown hair and light green eyes said while panting and trying to refill his lungs with air.

"There isn't any here. You have to walk back to the school to get some water." The boy and all the students started to moan and groan because there wasn't and water. "Right then, let's continue." Professor O'Brien ignored the moaning students and continued with his lesson. "Today we will be doing some physical training to increase your physique to ensure your fights last longer and you get some muscle on your bones." The professor said while looking at the skinny young man. The boy went almost purple in embarrassment and hid behind some of the bigger students.

"What I mean is we have to make you strong at this school so that you can handle the magical power that you output. I know some will not believe me but without the correct physique and strength you won't be able to handle higher Tiered magic. The reason behind this is that every time you increase the Tier of magic you also increase the amount of mana that you absorb into your body. If your body is not physically up to the amount of inflow of mana then it will crumble under the stress."

Some of the skinner students went pale at the thought that they might get fatally injured from using magic. "Don't worry everyone I may have used the wrong words. Let me give an example, let's say you are really skinny or very fat because it can swing both ways." The bigger kids also went pale at the thought of something bad happening to them. "If you use for instance Tier 5 magic with your current body. Your body won't be able to contain the mana that is needed for the spell."

"You could get seriously injured or if we are talking about the worst outcomes then a fatality is possible." Some students stepped back and thought about leaving the school and never performing magic in their entire lives. "Do not worry I am not trying to scare you just give you the most accurate outcomes from what I have experienced and seen. Your this exact reason is why we do physical training, not as a punishment but as a way to preserve your life."

"We have never had major injuries because of Mana Compression. That is the term to describe this condition as you are trying to compress all that mana into your body even though it can't fit and then it builds up in energy and explodes because that's what compressed mana does when you can't keep it contained." All the students were white as sheets in front of the professor.

Professor O'Brien gave a deep sigh, "This is why I don't give these talks to the kids. Anyway, that is the main reason why we do this and why everyday this week we will walk the 2km here and back, as well as train in different types of martial arts and fighting styles that mages use with magic. All of you will become stronger from this and will get a good head start on the other students."

"Please can everyone split into boys and girls and then form a line in each group from shortest to tallest. I will try and make it so everyone can fight someone their own height and then we will move to different heights later in the week. Okay everyone move now please." Everyone moved into their lines as the Professor started to make pairs of students.
