Chapter 3 - 3. Tragedy Part 1

Eight years have passed since the brothers built a home for themselves. Using the skills the taught themselves as well as materials the acquired over time, the two became prominent figures in the community. Not a day went by without them remembering the hardships they faced and no a single townsfolk was spared their prices.

Being on the surface, the two were able to farm. Unlike the fields within the pit, theirs flourished. The fertility of the land around the spring was unlike anything within the towns boarders. Direct sunlight nourished the crops to sizes unfathomable to those living in darkness.

What wasn't needed was traded or sold within the town. At first, the locals were hesitant to interact with the siblings because they knew nothing about them and knew not where they came from. Soon, word spread about what they had brought with them and business exploded. A week, was all the time needed for their entire stock to be emptied.

Life went on like this for years. They two even began working apart from each other. Jin would return to the town to resupply and sell good while Nick would remain in the woods, hunting big and small game with tools he fashioned himself. The one he was most proud of was a unique bow that drew a weight thrice any the townsfolk could pull. A crank allowed for the loading of this bow and unlike others, it was loosed from a shoulder held position. It's accuracy and power allowed for him to lay in wait for any unsuspecting fawn to cross his path.

On this particular venture, Nick had positioned himself long before daybreak with the sunrise to his back and wind coming from his front. He sat motionless in the brush waiting for his chance.

Jin had awaken far later than he and had taken the last of the excess crop to the town just after dawn. Several hours had passed and now the sun has fully risen. Life was blissful...or so they'd thought.

A buck dawning a rack unparalleled by any he'd seen previously had just entered his view. Nick was readying himself to take its life when he paused. Something was burning in the distance. Without hesitation, Nick leaped from his perch and bolted towards the town. What lay before his eyes brought anguish to his heart. Flames reached far into the sky from down below. The town was dying.

At first, Nick was in awe of the flames. Their beauty was only matched by their lethality. That awe was short lived. Within a minute, he dropped his bow and began charging straight at the pit. Jin was down there.

With only the one way up or down, Nick leaped to the lower wall with no thought of his own well being. He made the full descent in less than two minutes which would normally take him half an hour.

Planting his feet on the ground he made a dash towards the town center. His only thought was of his brother. Praying to the gods he'd forsaken from birth, he pleaded that no ha had befallen Jin. What he saw as he broke into to cobbled clearing made his words become stuck in his throat. The already heavy air became near unbreathable at the scene unraveling in front of him...
