Chapter 6 - 6. Nickolas Steiner

Routines create stability. A thought that organized people have at least once in their lives. Even those without a sense of organization can end up in a routine without knowing it. Nicholas Steiner is a mix of the two.

He is organized but his life follows no form of routine. His days start whenever he feels like it. He goes where he wants, when he wants. He returns home and passes out at the most random of times.

Despite this apparent carefree lifestyle, Nick needs organization. After living for a couple hundred years you end up just living each day as it comes. But, being one of the only if not the only person on the planet that's lived past a century means you need to keep your identity and prior identities in order.

Every couple years, he needs to start over. A new town, a new name, a new job. Having to go though about twenty or so identities a year can make things...complicated. Nick has it down to a theoretical science. With thirty identities to choose from, he is unlikely to run out of options even in an emergency.

Rotating through them the same months every century for the same period of time removes much of the confusion. Every couple centuries he's even able to return to places he's already been.

Not like there is anywhere he hasn't been to but for the past century he's decided to remain in the United States. 'The land of opportunity' lived up to its name in his eyes. The more time that passes, the more things there are for him to experience.

This includes women. Nick is by no indication a Saint. If the Pope knew of the sins he had committed and his general age...he would be labeled the Devil incarnate. No matter where he goes, he never fails to seek out enjoyment of all forms.

For the last couple years, a small suburb in Southern California has been his home. Life has been peaceful and undemanding. However, his time there has ended. Making the long drive in his '82 Pontiac, Nick heads back East to a small town in Northern New York. He plans to live a simple life and has already found a job as a farm hand.

One thing that has been the same since he came to the country is he enjoys working with his hands. Any form of laborious work is the first he looks into and helps determine his next home. This time, he won't be earning as much money as he previously has but that is no issue. with seven back account capped out with the maximum insured amount, he could live out nearly a millennium without lifting a finger. Now where's the fun in that.
