Chapter 7 - 7. Mid-Century Crisis

Nearly a year has passed since his move and Nick is starting to look into his next step. He loves to work he is doing and gets a sense of nostalgia from the area but there is one not so simple problem.

Despite his effort to distance himself, the land owner's niece repeatedly creates opportunities to be alone with him. His constant rejection is by no means him turning over a new leaf in his life or realizing the errors of his ways, its because he has a rule. 'You don't shit where you eat.' in other word, work and play are to remain separate.

Today is different, he can't just walk away this time. Opening his eyes, Nick was visibly confused. The last he remembered, he'd just finished stacking the hay in the loft. Now, he's bound to the supporting beams and missing his pants. "What the hell happened?"

"Bout time you came to. Was beginning to thick I got the amount wrong." Jess came walking through the door and locked it behind her. She is the oldest niece of the land owner and doesn't understand or refused to accept 'no' as an answer.

"This is a crime you know." Running out of options, Nick nearly gagged using his last ditch attempt to turn her away. The smile on her face let him know nothing he said scared her.

Sitting herself on top of him, Jess began running her hands through his hair. "Who do you think the sheriff will believe? That lil ol me managed to tie you up...or you pinned me down and had your way with me?"

Nick had had enough. He has done some despicable things in his time but there were lines even he wouldn't cross. With no other options in sight he began laughing. "What makes you so sure you have me stuck here?"

In the next sixty seconds a slew of emotions could be seen rushing across Jess' face. Amusement to amazement, amazement to fear, fear to panic. In one fluid motion, Nick ripped the two post his hands were tied to off the walls. Beginning to untie himself he smiled and looked directly into her eyes. When he stood up, she was already backed against the locked door. He began his approach, like a wolf stalking a dear. He stopped only when his nose touched hers. "Pants, now!"

He was furious. His peaceful life was uprooted by one, overly obsessive woman. After putting his jeans back on, Nick left. He called the owner on the road and told him some things came up and he's leaving town. The owner sounded nearly as enraged as Nick over the phone. Without even hearing why, he immediately knew and screamed for his niece to come in the house. His only thought after setting the phone down was he'd just lost the best worker he'd ever seen because his niece couldn't follow the teachings of the Bible.

It took nearly an hour for Nick to reach his apartment. He drove nonstop but despite his anger, never went over the speed limit. His found sense of rationality following what transpired made him not desire additional attention to himself. He simply wanted to pack his limited belongings and leave.

His packing was interrupted by a knock at his door. Confused, he quietly went to the peep whole. Gazing through offered no clarity because who he saw on the other side, looked like nobody he'd ever known. Not in this town at least.

Opening the door the confusion could be seen on his face. Not knowing what else to say, he could only ask "can I help you with something miss?" He was sure he'd never met this woman before but he couldn't shake the feeling he knew her somehow.

Her long, silver hair stretched behind her back. Long slim legs stuck out from the short Jean shorts she wore. Her blue t-shirt was skin tight as it struggled to sit over the mountains on her chest and cling to her slender waist. The deepness of the green of her eyes looked as if it could see your soul.
