Chapter 5 - 5. Getting By

In an otherwise uneventful neighborhood, the sound of tools can be heard working away. A new house is being built for a new family to start out. All of the workers are currently lazing around without a care in the world. All except one.

On the unfinished roof, works a lone man. He stands five feet, eleven inches tall. Has an average length haircut that's style long faded with sweat. His muscle tone is refined but not like those whom spend countless hours at a gym. His eyes are a pearlescent blue and his smile is without flaw. The most notable feature on this slightly above average man is the scars on his chest, shoulder, and back. A bite mark he claims came from a wolf he'd encountered when he was younger.

Nicholas Steiner appears to be your average nineteen year old but he has a dark secret. A secret he has hidden since before the oldest generation currently alive was even dreamt about. Despite this, he has never once been caught.

Several hundred years have passed by and Nick is still getting by as though he were completely normal. He moves every couple years and never allows any one person to know more than his name, that he's nineteen, and he's looking for work.

His life is by no means one of luxury. He cannot afford to stand out. If he loses control, only he knows what may happen. For his own self worth, this is more than enough.

"Hey Nicky, why don't you take a break like the rest of us? Not like the house is going anywhere." Jared was easily the closest person to Nick at the time. They both started working at the company the same time. Despite having been working together for three years, Jared has never given up on getting him to open up a bit.

"This is my last project Jared. I've got to make sure I can leave on time or else my parents will have my head." What he said was mostly the truth. This is his last job with the company. His reason for leaving simply had nothing to do with his parents. After all, he never had any. His leaving on time is just the day he has to be out of his single bedroom apartment.

Coming up from behind the rest of the crew is the foreman, Kevin. "Hate to lose ya kid. You work harder than all these idiots combined although that doesn't say much." Out of all the jobs he'd work and all the bosses that came with the work, Kevin was by far Nick's favorite. He was an honest, hardworking, fair man. He gave credit where it was dude and he didn't just push the workload on those under him.

"Come on boss, don't go getting all touchy feely on me now. We knew this was coming months ago. Was only a matter of time before my folks caught up to me and made me come home." With a slight pain in his heart, Nick kept pushing through the work at hand one shingle at a time.
