Chapter 33 - Defeating the Wave

"Where are all these creatures coming from?!" Robert yelled, as he disintegrated three more under his next swing. Seeing how damaging Robert was to them, the Scorpedes decided to focus more of their attacks towards him. "Damn beast! Your needles can't get past my armor!" Robert exclaimed while dodging most of the needles with quick reflexes, and having the rest burn to ash underneath the heat.

"I'm not sure, but I believe they are coming from beyond that door right there. Do you think you can make a path over there, while I cover your back?" Sydra asked, as he zipped through the room dragging his daggers through the creatures bodies. Although they were killing the creatures easily every time one of them died another two would appear.

"Yeah, I can do that. Just stick close to me, so that the path I create doesn't close up before you make it through!" Robert said, swinging his hammer in a circle around him. This created a small opening that Sydra hopped into so he could watch Robert's back.

"Argh!" Robert yelled as he wielded his hammer with one hand, and started firing off fireballs into the crawling mess of Scorpedes. Every time a fireball hit one of them it would demolish it on impact before it exploded and created a small fire wave that flowed out in a five meter circle. As the fire wave hit more of the Scorpedes it would lose its intensity, and the Scorpedes at the five meter mark and beyond would only have part of their shells scorched.

While Robert was disintegrating all the Scorpedes in front of them, Sydra was busy throwing his daggers out into the creatures. He had created a few spiders and attached them to the daggers, then using the web that they created he could pull the daggers back in an instant. Once he added his lightning to it, the speed in which he was firing out the daggers was to fast for the normal human eye to see. If someone was to watch from the sidelines all they would see would be flashes of ashgold lightning illuminate the room for a second before a Scorpede fell to the ground dead. Sydra was going so fast that seven creatures would fall every second, allowing him to start clearing out the room bit by bit.

"How close are we to the door?" Sydra asked, as he dodged underneath a needle shot at him, before killing the Scorpede that had fired it.

"We are almost there only sixteen more meters, but the creatures seem to be getting bigger the closer we get to it!" Robert yelled back, as he swept his hammer in an arc, killing five more of the Scorpedes.

"Bigger?!" Sydra exclaimed, glancing past Robert to see what he was talking about. The normal size of the creatures they had been facing only went up to their knees, but the bigger ones that Robert was talking about went up to their waist. They were also a bit longer, and had thicker needles at the end of their bodies. However, Sydra couldn't see them clearly due to Robert being to far away to cast enough light on them.

"Do you think your armor can withstand those needles?" Sydra asked, sending his daggers into the few remaining Scorpedes, reaping their lives. So far he hadn't been able to gather any of the creatures aura due to the fact that they were still in battle.

"Yeah, I can still withstand their needles, but if they get any bigger it will be a problem," Robert said, as he demolished more of the creatures in front of them with a fireball. By now the room they were in was begging to become charred, and there were large craters in the ground. The only reason the entire room hadn't become an inferno yet was because Robert was incredibly proficient when it came to using his fire aura.

"That is good, try to fire a fireball at the bigger Scorpedes and see if you can damage any of them," Sydra said, jumping over a crater that had been created by their battle.

'Boom' Robert fired off a large fireball in the direction of the larger Scorpedes, but when it had hit their shells it didn't do much to them. The only result was that they became enraged and began firing off their needles.

"Crap! It didn't do anything and now they are begging to join in the battle," Robert said, as he knocked one of the larger needles out of the air with his hammer. The needle was sent flying into another Scorpede, and pierced through its head, killing it instantly.

"How much power did you put into that attack?" Sydra asked, as they slowly crept closer to the door. Now they were only nine meters away, and Sydra could see the larger Scorpedes more clearly. They were a dark purple color, and their needles and pinchers were coated in a green color. The few that had been hit with Robert's fire ball had small cracks on their shells, but that was about all.

"I put around seventy-five percent of my full power into that attack, why?" Robert explained, crushing another Scorpede underneath his hammer. Other than the big ones that seemed to be guarding the door, only two regular sized Scorpedes remained.

"Fire one with one-hundred percent, at the same time I will launch off a lightning bolt that will also hit them. We will do this once these last two die!" Sydra instructed, as he sent his daggers through the last two creatures heads, before pulling them back into his hands and sending them into his Arbor Sanctum.

"Now!" Sydra yelled, as he formed a large lightning bolt in his hands and threw it towards the blue inferno of a fireball that Robert had casted. When the lightning bolt hit the fire ball, it didn't cause it to explode and instead combined with it. With the ashgold lightning bolt increasing the speed and power that the blue firebolt had, the large Scorpedes didn't have time to escape the explosion that occurred when it hit them.

'Screech' The Scorpedes began to cry out in pain as the explosion encased them all, and the heat devoured them. However, the explosion didn't stop there and continued to expand towards Robert and Sydra.

"Opps, to much power. Ancient Root Defense!" Sydra said, slamming his hand into the ground and calling forth roots to shield them from the explosion. The roots surrounded the two men completely and created a small bubble around them. Inside, Sydra was busy trying to manipulate the rapidly rising temperature so that they didn't cook to death.

"It's almost passed us, just hold on a little bit longer!" Robert said, as he used his fire manipulation to increase the speed of the fire on the outside to pass them by quicker. A few seconds later and the fire had began to disperse on the far corners of the room, leaving nothing but ash from the lunch table it had passed. Somehow the ceiling, floor, and walls weren't on fire, and with nothing left to burn the fire dissipated into the air.

"Damn I wonder what this room is made out of, tp resist such hot flames," Robert said, bending down to feel the floor, and being surprised to find out it was actually cool to the touch.

"I'm not sure, but it seems that the Scorpedes aren't made from the same stuff as they are gone now," Sydra said, as he walked over and kicked the pile of ash that used to be the creatures. "Hmm, what's this?" he asked, as he bent over and uncovered a few long green needles.

"Did some of their needles seriously not burn in that inferno?" Robert asked, picking up another needle from a different ash pile. Walking around, Sydra picked up a few more needles he found and sent them to his Arbor Sanctum.

"I guess not. Anyway, lets continue and see what is past this door that they were willing to die to guard from us," Sydra said, as he walked pasted what was left of the door, and into what appeared to be a dirt hallway. Reaching out his hand, Sydra tried to collect some of the dirt, but it was packed solidly to the wall. Pulling out one of his dagger, he dug some of the dirt away and held it near Robert's flame armor so he could see what it was made from. The dirt was light red in color and seemed to be held together by some crystalized substance.

"It seems that the Scorpedes collected this dirt, and then used their spit as a sort of glue. This mixture created a solidified structure that they live in and it doesn't seem to be able to be burnt," Sydra explained, as he studied the dirt in his hand.

"How far do you think this tunnel goes?" Robert asked, looking down the dark tunnel, with no end in sight.

"We can find that out after we check on Cidre and Erich. I believe we have taken care of a large amount of the creatures, so we should be safe for a few minutes," Sydra said, before exiting the hallway and using his dragon staff to temporary freeze the entrance closed.
