As soon as the clock hit 5 am, Dimitri stirred from sleep. He blinked his eyes to adjust to his dark surroundings and found that he was still in a state of partial transformation. There was also an acute smell of a vampire coming from everywhere.
Transforming back to his humanoid form, he deduced he was in some form of cabin. He could smell the trees that were outside and his senses could map out the area he was vaguely. Where he was in the cabin was a small room with only a bed, a lamppost, cloth hanger, wall clock, and a small chair.
Standing up, he headed for the door and out into the cabin. He saw her, milling about the kitchen, humming a song he didn't know. She didn't turn around but she acknowledged his presence.
"Good morning werewolf"
"What happened?"
"You passed out and I brought you here. I'm making breakfast. Do you dislike pork?"
"I'm not interested in being fed by a strange vampire" he said but was soon betrayed by his stomach which let out a loud growl. She snickered and turned to him. She looked nothing like the little orange-haired vampire he had seen the night before. It was almost like she was another person.
For one, she was taller, her long orange hair was now in a bob and it was dark orange, her scarlet eyes the only thing that remained unchanged.
"You're an interesting werewolf. You'd better sit and wait for breakfast. If you don't like pork, you can remove the bacon I'm putting inside"
"And what's on your menu, me?" He asked with suspicion. Vampires were known to drink blood after all. She chuckled lowly, zipping across the hall and landing in front of him, holding his neck. Her fangs dropped from her gums, forming a wicked grin.
"Are you offering?"
"Get off me you fiend!"
He soon heard her laughter in the kitchen again. It was like she never moved from there. After standing stubbornly in front of the room for a few minutes, he eventually gave in and sat at the dining table.
She placed a plate of bacon, eggs, and pancakes in front of him. The food emitted a tantalizing odor and the way the syrup dripped off the side of the pancakes made him salivate.
"By all means, please dig in" she said, amusement unmasked in her tone. After sparing her one last suspicious glance, he took a fork and started eating. It was delicious! He found that he couldn't stop after one bite.
He finished his food before finding out what she was eating. Unlike him, she didn't rush her food. There was a lone piece of pancake in front of her, blood-red instead of brown. The pork on her plate was raw but the eggs were fried like his.
Even after fighting vampires for so long, Dimitri found that he couldn't understand them, at all. Seeing her made him subvert every opinion he had about them.
She offered to lead him to the castle after they were done eating and let him take a bath. He wore his old clothes and together, they departed.
Sharing the world with many other intelligent species, the world had really developed in the 22nd century. Even in the midst of the deep forests, the vampires had a flourishing modern city.
AI robots went around cleaning the city, AI-controlled cabs took people to their destinations and although the houses were small and quaint, they were equipped with the latest technologies. He got to see bigger buildings and even mansions as they drove deeper into the heart of the city in a cab.
The whole drive was silent as Dimitri's aura completely rejected conversations. She continuously hummed the song he had heard from her earlier and it was starting to get on his nerves.
There was a phone in her hands, and as far as he knew, it was the latest model of the brand of expensive phones his brother liked to hoard. He was given one of course but his brother hoarded that one too. So, the only form of communication he had was left with the rest of the delegation.
"You know, you haven't asked for my name and you haven't told me yours" she suddenly said. He gave her a short glance and looked away.
"I'm not interested in knowing who you are and never wish to see you again"
"I'm Yvaine, just Yvaine. Tell me your name"
He couldn't be bothered to respond to her. She chuckled again, making it seem like he was having a childish tantrum. He felt very irritated and wished the car would go faster. They soon arrived at the royal palace of the Vampire Queen.
The palace was over 20 feet tall and he could tell it was ancient. It was made out of white marble and stones, along with some mysterious materials. The gates of the castle were just as hefty as the gates of the city. She stood by his side as he sized up the castle, an old war habit he failed to get rid of. They faced each other.
"This is the castle. You can just walk right in and you'd find the main hall. The vampires in there would assist you"
"Why is the gate unguarded?"
"The guards are off duty because of last night's ritual. There is a spell on the buildings that make sure the vampires aren't affected by the moon so everyone just stays indoors. It's never fun that way" she sighed sadly. He furrowed his brows and moved a bit from her.
Pushing the gates, he went straight in without looking back. He could still feel her presence while walking on the path towards the entrance. The fresh smell of flowers assaulted his nose as he got closer to the castle.
Back where he left her, Yvaine had a large grin on her face. She tapped her chin and touched her chest. With her enhanced vision, she could see a thin red string that stretched into the distance in the same distance Dimitri had gone, coming from her chest.
It pulsed at intervals as if it were alive and pulled her towards his direction. If her feet weren't firmly anchored to the ground, she would've hit Dimitri's back a long time ago with the strong magnetic force.
"Now, I wonder how long it'll take him to notice. This is getting interesting~~" she said, cackling to herself.
