Chapter 4 - Chapter Three

Intruder

Calia

'What happened to that poor kitty?' I thought as Zay handed me my stuff and squatted down to pat my hair.

"Remember, get your permission slip signed by Mrs. Briggs and then make sure you have everything done before you come home, ok?" he said, looking into my eyes with his slate grey ones. Grabbing his hand I ask: "What is the permission slip for again Zay?"

"It's to give you an O-K to skip second grade next year," he replied. "because you are such a smart kid, so you would go into third instead of second grade." 'Wow, so I'm very very smart, just like Zay?' I thought happily. Looking up at my brother, I tugged at his jacket and lifted up my arms. This is what I do every single time.

I picked up Lia and headed towards the school cafeteria, only to stop and glance over my shoulder to look out that same window to the forest. I saw that thing right by my truck, just staring at me. Then it smiled. That smile. That gruesome smile with teeth so sharp that they could cut diamonds. It felt like an eternity had passed just staring at that…creature. Its body started to tremble, as if it was almost...laughing. 'Does it know I'm looking at it? How can it know that if it has no eyes?' As if it thought I wasn't scared enough, it stood up on its hind legs; it had what looked like a slender body with claws, not hands or paws but…claws -and it was pitch black. Almost vanta black, with no visible dimensions but a dark void.

I jumped at the nerve-wracking ring of the warning bell. Breathing heavily, I turned around and picked up my pace to take Lia to her class. Entering her classroom, I handed her bag to her and went to her teacher.

"I am so sorry Mrs. Briggs, please excuse Calia- she was a little late because of me this morning. It won't happen again." I apologized. She nodded then continued to shoo me out of her classroom. Waving to Lia before I left, I hurried down the hall towards my first class of the day. Art.

I watched as Zay left the room and I turned to look for my friends at the table we usually sit at. Kensie and Lulu waved when they saw me heading towards them. I jumped with joy and told them what happened after school yesterday and this morning, but I avoided telling them about the poor kitty I saw. They giggled and colored while I drew my dogs, Luna and Lucky. Mrs. Briggs came over and asked if I had anything for her to sign. I looked at her, confused, until I remembered what Zay said, so I leapt up and snatched the paper from my bag while waiting for her to sign it. Once it was given back to me, I rushed to put it away, gently sliding it into the pocket of my favorite unicorn folder, proceeding to return it to my bag.

Mrs. Turner walked around the classroom examining our charcoal art. Today we are 'expressing ourselves' and putting our thoughts into art. Yeah, no idea why she expects us to do this. 'This is so stupid,' I thought in dismay.

I jumped out of my skin as a hand landed on my shoulder. Looking up, I saw it was only my art teacher. "That is a very...unique creature you have there Zach. Why don't you see me after this class and explain to me what it is to you, emotionally." Calming my over exhilarated heart, I watched as she walked down the aisle to her desk. Confused by what she said, I looked down at the drawing that was done on my art page.

The detail was so specific- I didn't draw this, did I? I couldn't have though. I mean, I was too busy being lost in my thoughts to even notice. I looked around the room to see if anyone noticed what I drew. Hopefully they were all too busy to notice me. As the bell rang, I slammed my book shut and shoved it into my bag. Mrs. Turner came up to me and said: "Are you okay honey? Is everything okay at home? How about school with your grades?" she asked in a motherly voice.

Shaking my head, I smiled. "I'm fine Mrs. Turner, I promise. I'm not being bullied and my homelife is perfectly fine. Calia and I eat well and our family spends lots of quality time together. Also, I have lots of friends." I said, my smile widening. She watched me suspiciously. Finally she nodded and flicked her hand at me to leave her class. Heading out the door, I was slammed into from behind by Jackson Mills. He is a superstar athlete with no sense of being nice.

"What's up nerd? Worried your sister is running around with another guy? Oh, maybe I can go get her and show her how a real man works!" He yelled for everyone in the hall to hear. Staying on the ground I looked up at him and shook my head; staying quiet. He then proceeded to grab my bag and dump it out before leaving, leaving me alone in the silent hallway with a sketch of a monster that was watching my every move.
