Attack
I clenched my eyes shut as the thudding got louder and closer. Bodies being torn apart and screams were heard from all over the school while I was hidden in a cabinet, trembling. I can't tell you why I hid in the cabinet; it was just a feeling that something was coming that kept me hidden.
The instructor started yelling as I heard things crash against walls and bones snapping apart. All I could do was sit and listen to the harsh sounds all around me as I held my breath and waited for it to all end. Tears, which had poured down my cheeks, were now running over the splattered blood on my face.
All I could think about right now was my younger sibling, just down the hall. 'Is she ok? Is she alive? Did she run and hide? -or did she stay put like the other stupid kids?' My thoughts were racing, and I really missed my sister. Calia was the best to cheer me up during my rough times. 'I know this is a bad thought, but maybe the school was playing a cruel joke on us? I mean, if I came out of the cabinet I'd be perfectly fine right? No blood, no scratches, just perfectly fine?' I was scared. The silence was unbearable and so incredibly quiet that you could hear a pin clatter to the floor. 'No movement, so no one is there. Right? Maybe I could just take a peek?' I thought curiously.
When I was just about to push the cabinet door open, I heard a scraping noise coming from down the hall.
"Hello?" I whispered, my voice weak and raspy from hours of crying to myself. "Is anyone there?" I was answered with silence, listening intently. Losing the last strand of hope I had, I curled up into a ball with my head in my knees. I wish Calia was here.
"Zach? Honey, is that you? Are you there?" I looked up slowly and whispered in a raspy voice:
"Mom?" Again I was met with silence, followed by a soft, strange growling that didn't sound anything like what I've heard from an animal before. "Mom is that you?" I called out again, filling with hope. I tried to peek through the crack of the cabinet door, but all I saw was an empty, visible strip of classroom. A dark shape moved in front of the light and I flinched back, unsure what it was. There was another growl, but closer this time. It was as if it came from deep in the creature's throat. I was starting to think it wasn't my mom.
"Yes dear, it's me. Come on out, it's safe." It was her voice again. Trying to connect the events with what brain power I had left, it simply didn't make sense. My mom was at school, there were frighteningly loud and bone rattling noises, blood on my face from most likely one of my classmates, and otherworldly growling coming from just inches away.
"How do I know it's you?" I asked cautiously. I got a frustrated grumble in response.
"I sound like your mother, don't I sweetie? I'm here to take you home now. Come along." I followed the voice as it moved further away. I let out a sigh of relief. It was right, it did sound like my mom. The thing was, she didn't talk or act like that, which was throwing me off even more.
"Yes," I replied blankly, listening intently as gentle swishes indicated the creature moving further away. Then I had a realization. Staring down the empty tunnel of cabinets connected to mine, I watched with horror as light flooded the one on the end. It was open. A large cat-like head, the one from earlier, peeked inside, shooting me a mischievous toothy grin dripping with blood.
"There you are, my child," The creature said in my mom's voice, getting deeper and more demonic as it climbed into the cabinet. I was right, it wasn't her. I stared in terror as its body shrank just enough to slip inside the cabinet; it must've been huge. Shock subsided as feeling returned to my limbs, fight or flight instincts kicking in at last. Just as it lurched for me, I leapt out of the cabinet and slammed the door in its face, locking it swiftly. I dashed for the open one at the end and closed it just in time for the creature to throw itself against it at full force. Thinking quickly, I propped two bloody chairs against each door, hoping it would hold it long enough for me to escape…
Turning around and tripping over bags and limbs of my classmates, I stumbled out the door and froze.
What the hell is that…..
