Chapter 8 - Chapter Seven

Twisted

Zach

It was a horrible creature about as tall as my chest, with grasshopper legs and dark sandpaper looking skin, its mouth foaming with silver saliva, white eyes that were made for the darkness. This flesh-eating monster was nocturnal. I froze in place as it looked around the room for anything moving, or shall I say.. alive.

Then its neck suddenly snapped -yes, it repeatedly snapped its neck as its head turned towards and away several times, its horrible mouth turned up into a grin. Tilting its head, it did something that terrified me the most. "Tick Tock went the clock before it struck twelve. Tick Tock went the Boy who screamed until there was no noise, Tick Tock, Tick T-t-tock." It jittered, approaching me. I backed away slowly from the gurgling beast as I slid onto my back banging my head on the tile floor. Slowly, I realized that everything had gone very silent, I looked up towards the hall where the monster was only to find it no longer there. Breathing heavily, I jolted forward and on my feet, looking at the ground and finding a sharp piece of metal, slipping it into my pants pocket -just in case. I couldn't find the beast anywhere; it was as if I imagined it. Walking up towards the nearest wall I slid against it and closed my eyes. I'm going crazy, I thought to myself. Maybe I did imagine it. But that thought was quickly ruled out.

I felt something wet drop onto my face as I slowly opened my eyes, panicked. My breathing became labored as I looked above me. My heart stopped as I saw the thing from the hallway. I figured that it could see in the dark, but now I knew this: The damn thing can climb walls, It split its mouth open in a labored smile, but I didn't stay long enough to see what would happen, so I scrambled up and took off running, jumping over limbs of decapitated bodies of people who I knew and those whom I had never met. I looked around, trying to find a way to avoid the dangerous scraping sounds that were coming closer towards my panicked form.

I skidded around the corner to find the cafeteria doors which were the only doors in this school made of steel. About a foot away from the doors I felt the searing pain of the sharpened talons of the beast cut through my back. Screaming in agony, I threw myself at the doors and locked them from the inside. Taking off the hoodie I had on, I clenched my teeth as I wrapped the hoodie around my back only to catch a glimpse of the wound in the metal; the talons had hit the shoulder bone. Shaking, I wrapped it up, groaning in intense pain. I jumped at the sound of the doors being slammed into from the outside. Looking around I headed straight for the kitchen and hid under the table where they would serve food during lunch. The noises outside ceased for a minute until I heard the doors burst open. I snuck behind a flipped table and peeked through a tiny crack where it had broken. I could see anything from where I was, so I relied on the noises

around me only to hear what sounded like a fight between multiple animals.

Looking through the crack again when everything went quiet, I was met with a horrifying scene. The nocturnal beast was being swallowed alive by the catlike creature from earlier. I stared, horrified, as it ate the other and then proceeded to look around for something -or should I say, me. I waited for what seemed like 10 minutes until I was dragged out of my hiding place from behind. The creature looked at me with its split face and replied in Calia's voice: "I win Zay." It started to open its mouth wide but stopped and stood frozen before letting me fall to the ground. I was paralyzed in place on the ground as I watched it look at its chest and then back up at me, grabbing the piece of metal and slowly pulling it out. I slowly started to inch back as it inched forwards.

"Y'know kid, it takes a lot more to kill a mimic then ya think," it said in a raspy voice, continuing to back me up until I was against the cabinets where the silverware was. When I couldn't go any further, I knew I was cornered and this was probably the end. The creature grabbed my neck and started to choke me, as it was too busy to notice my hands feeling around the table, I grabbed a butcher knife and cut the hand that was choking me off. The mimicker creature hissed while gripping its wrist as I lay gasping for breath, proud that I managed to survive. My victory was short lived as it started to laugh, its hand growing back. My eyes widened, running into the kitchen area while the creature chased after.

"You can't kill me child!" it bellowed from behind me. My eyes scanned the kitchen as I avoided the slashes of the mimic's claws. My eyes found the furnace and an axe, but it was behind the creature so without thinking I ran forward and slid right under the beast's legs. When I got to the axe, I had to change direction again to the direction of the furnace. When I got inside the furnace I turned on my heel, swinging the axe as with all my strength possible and hitting the gut of the mimicker. Blood splattered on my shirt, jeans, and face as I jerked the axe back out, opening the fresh wound and watching the creature collapse as it clutched its bleeding gut, hissing.

I jumped out and slammed the furnace door closed, turning the heat on high. The flames roared as I watched the creature burn to a crisp. When I was sure it was gone, my hands reached up and turned off the furnace. I felt so empty sitting in silence, only to think of my sister. Was she okay? I thought. I clutched the bloodied axe and slung it over my shoulder as I exited the cafeteria, only to look back at the bloodied hand on the floor. I headed towards Calia's class in a rush, the only audible sounds were that of the dying flames.
