Chapter 10 - Chapter Nine

Watch Your Backs

Zach

"Lia?", the look in my baby sister's eyes told me that she was terrified. Almost broken to the point of not returning but who could blame her? She wasn't even old enough to understand what was happening yet.

"Zay?" She questioned me with tears spilling down her face. The tears of an angel. I rushed towards her broken form and held onto her for dear life. I crouched down in front of her and gently wiped her tears from her cheeks while also attempting to wipe the blood from her face.

"Hey there lia. I'm right here, no need to cry. Ok?" I said trying to calm her down from the sobs silently shaking her frail figure. I gently closed my eyes as I felt the tears almost spill from my eyes but I couldn't let them out. Not right now at least, not in front of Calia. Right now, I have to figure out how to get both of use out of the living hell, alive. We would also have to keep our eyes open for any survivors who don't seem to be dying or ripped apart. It was going to be harder then thinking it would be because of the gaping hole in my back. I needed medical treatment and I needed it sooner rather than later.

If I don't make it then I already need to find someone alive and not dead to take care of Calia. She doesn't understand the world right now. But….. then again I don't think any of us do. First it started with the forecasts about the chances of an apocalyptic future because some scientists decided they wanted to make the world's worst nightmares come true. For what? Oh yeah for a war that might never happen. Humans might not escape the rage they have caused upon….. Whatever these things are. I guess they were once human or stray animals before the scientists became cruel and unforgiving, such as doing tests that would rot their bodies while they begged and pleaded for mercy as black gunk came pouring out of their mouths.

I gently grabbed Calia by the hand and knelt down beside her. With the hand that wasn't holding her hand, I gently ran through her tangled hair. "Ok Calia, we are going to go through the school again and I know you don't want to. I know it's scary but I need you to be a big brave girl for your brother ok? Can you do that?" i questioned the terrified girl who looked so brave but on the inside you could tell she was slowly reliving everything she just had to go through; I only wish i could make her stop.

Calia

I clenched my fists into tight balls, feeling the pain of my now unclipped dirty nails dig into my palms. I wanted… no I needed to be strong for my brother. As he said a big brave girl, that's what I'll be. I looked up at the now stained ceiling, then over the headless body of the dead monster. Then finally, at my blood covered brother who was holding an axe stained with grim and even more blood. If he could be brave, so could I. I watched my brother, his movements told me that the pain had intensified. He was constantly shifting on each foot with care, as if he was afraid that he would collapse at any given moment.

We finally decided to leave the classroom behind, wandering into the bloodied hallways of our old ghosted school. I gripped Zachs hand as I constantly watched behind me. I swore i saw something move in the cornner of my eyes, it was on the ceilings. Maybe your seeing things Calia, there are not real. 'You just went through a lot of trauma, only figments of your imagination.' I thought to myself as i turned around to look ahead. That was until we heard something drop on the ground. In horror I saw a skinned human, black eyes with grey pupils. Its jaw looked as if it was unhooked, opened wide, the canines were sharper then a knife would look. It looked our ways as it cocked its head at us.

"I feel cold? Maybe if your would be so kind as to lets me have one of your fine pale skins, I wouldnt be some cold? And your pretty eyes, so... delicious looking. I wonder, what they would look like…..in my EYES!", he said has he lunged at us while swiping his slimy, muscley and boney fingers. The bones almost created claws, demolishing anything in its way, mostly the spare desks and lockers, while also spreading more of the intestines and meats of those around us.

The only thing that came to my mind was if that thing caught us, it would skin us alive, literally speaking. Zach grabbed my as he took off down the hallway, swinging the axe if the beast got too close to us. While he was doing this, I held on to dear life, clinging to his shirt, salty tears spilling from my eyes as what happened back at the classroom flashed through my eyes again. I looked back up to see the monster was now on all fours trying to gain speed to catch up with Zays running form. Then he got close enough he lunged again only to caught Zachs pant leg.

Zay fell to the floor as he clutched me to his chest. Trying to keep me from falling onto the hard concrete floor. That's when we heard,

"You can't escape this, foolish children."
