Chapter 7 - Chapter Six

Purely Bloodred

Calia

As Zay left me at my class and headed towards his own, I sadly watched him go. Sighing, I turned and sat at my desk. As I sat down, the vice principal came in and told us to quiet down so she could speak freely.

"Ok students, quiet down. So we have an intruder drill today so you have to stay quiet and collected just like the older kids," She explained calmly, giving us a gentle smile. All of the children, including me, smiled back at her and nodded our heads. 'Calm and collected, I can do that,' I thought as I heard the door close behind her. Glancing up at the window, I noticed that the sky was unusually dark. There didn't seem to be any birds in the sky or the trees.

When I looked closer, I saw a little House Sparrow. Watching it hop along the tree branches made me forget about the sky darkening. I looked away, only to look back at the small bird to see it being crushed by a huge human-like hand with grey skin. It also had a human-like face, only its eyes were like those of a cat. The sickening difference was the whites, which were black and the pupils were crimson. Its teeth looked as if they couldn't fit inside of its mouth.

I stared in fear, watching in horror as it lifted its mouth and swallowed the house sparrow without chewing. As if it knew I was looking at it, the creature turned and stared straight at me, and with the blood left from the house sparrow, it drew a smile on its face that went from ear to ear. 'Smile,' it seemed to say to me. I kept staring, my heart racing as it shook violently and its pupils dilated. I jumped out of my paralyzed state when the drills went off. I turned back to see if it was still there...only to see an empty tree.

Shaking my head, I turned back towards the teacher as she ushered us to get into the corner. When we all were secure in the corner, our teacher hushed us. We all stayed quiet until we heard the first screams from the class across the hall from us. I thought it was a joke so I looked up to tell Mrs. Briggs how funny the principles are, but I stopped when I saw how her face looked. The absolute horror on her face as she looked out the doors' thin glass window.

I froze when a shadow passed by the door as the light outside flickered. Lulu and Kensie gripped my hands as I did theirs. I didn't know what to do, I just wanted my big brother. I put my hand over my mouth as I snuffled down a sob that was threatening to break me. It was just about to go away when the door exploded and went into splinters on the floor, the creature stalking into the room as if it was approaching frightened prey. I recognized it as the thing that had eaten the little sparrow, just outside. The tears came spilling out as I watched Mrs. Briggs run towards the thing with a lamp from the corner of the room. She swung at it bravely and it skittered back in surprise before leaping at her with a blood-curdling shriek. Nearby windows shattered into thousands of pieces as it tackled Mrs. Briggs to the ground. She screamed as it opened its mouth full of knife-like teeth, biting down on her neck and breaking it in a deafening crack. As if for fun, it destroyed and mutated her body, coating that part of the room in her blood and innards. I felt my stomach turn as puke hurled up through my throat and mouth, getting all over the kid in front of me.

"No.." Kensie whispered, gripping my hand. A few other kids had barfed on the floor as we forced ourselves to the furthest back corner of the room, the sickening smell of throw up and death rising. The putrid smell filled my nose as I pulled my hands away from Kensie and Lulu to clasp them over my face.

"Ew.." Lulu whined, trying to clean vomit off her tights. Everyone turned to look at her with the sudden noise. Everyone, including the creature. Suddenly distracted from Mrs. Briggs's carcas, its neck turned at a near-broken angle as it abandoned his meat, approaching us slowly. It was like a human, only its legs were inverted as it climbed up the wall. It took slow, careful steps toward us, clinging close to the ceiling. We stared in horror as blood dripped down the wall from its mouth and claws, its red pupils the color of hell. In a swift movement, it jumped down next to me and pinned Kensie to the ground. She shrieked helplessly, going silent as the creature impaled her heart with its right hand, ripping it out and throwing it into my lap. I looked down as warm blood coated my hands, her still beating heart sitting on my palms.

"Kensie!!" Lulu screamed, trying to pull her body away. Her attempts were useless because it leaned down and bit her head off, swallowing it as her headless body fell on top of Kensie's. Tears poured out of my eyes as I watched my friend's lifeless bodies discarded aside, the creature then going for the other kids closer to it. I got up and tried to scoot away, my instincts kicking in as I bolted for escape only to find myself cornered by the creature. It crawled towards me, its neck twitching as if hungry after all of my classmates' deaths. Glancing around, I realized with shock that I was the last one alive. It pushed me to the ground, carving a deep, stinging scratch in my left arm. It leaned in, opening its mouth slowly as if to give me a good look at my killer… My last thought was 'I really want Zay.'
