Chapter 5 - Chapter Four

Drill

Calia

I impatiently stared at the clock, waiting for my brother to take me to lunch. Kensie plopped down in the empty seat next to me.

"Calia, why do you always hang out with your brother?" she questioned as I started to pack up. I looked up at her and smiled.

"He would be sad without my company. He is my brother after all." I said, She was about to say something when the bell interrupted her sentence. I jumped out of my seat and rushed out the door while waving 'bye' to my friends. I saw my brother in the hallway shortly after. He was heading my way when…

*BAM!*

A girl ran into him. She and Zach had a brief, weird conversation, rudely interrupted when a boy and a girl that looked almost exactly like her came and dragged her away.

Zach

I had everything in my arms as I headed towards my sister's first grade class, when I suddenly slammed into someone, dropping the sketch book from shock. I tried not to stare as it fell open. I recognized the person; it was a girl from my 5th hour. I think her name was Wolf Adeen or something like that.

"Watch where you're going, twerp!" she snarled at me, causing me to flinch back in surprise. Her face flashed with guilt. "I- I'm sorry, I'm just…a little...uneasy today." she explained awkwardly. I nodded and started to collect my stuff that had gone flying due to the impact of our collision.

"You see them too," I heard her whisper. I looked up and saw her looking down at my open art book. She turned her frightened gaze towards me with her eyes narrowed. "You have a younger sister, don't you?" I nodded, my face laced with confusion. Wolf must've noticed because she proceeded to get up and grab me by the collar of my shirt, yanking me off the floor while repeating: "You need to take your sister, and get out of here." I stood there, stunned, watching her friend Tig and her twin brother, Duke, pulled her off me and took her outside.

'So that's why they call her trigger,' I thought before heading back towards my little sister, who was waiting patiently.

I watched Zay walk over to me as I stood there, waiting. When he finally reached me, he bent down and grabbed both of my hands.

"How were your classes today?" he asked, smiling at me. I felt my face brighten up as I told him happily: "My classes were great, how were yours?" He proceeded to tell me his classes went just fine. We walked and talked until we reached the cafeteria where Zay told me to go pick us some seats while he went to get us food. I sat down and looked around the room; the same walls, the same tiles, and the same black and white stage… but why did everything feel so different today? My thoughts were forgotten as my brother sat down at the table. In our own silence, we ate, and then shortly after Zay took me back to class.

Zach

After taking Calia back to her class, I turned around to head over to my Anatomy class when I overheard teachers talking in soft whispers. I slowed down to catch what they were saying: 'Did you hear? Mr. Watts heard something in the basement this afternoon. We're going to do an intruder drill this afternoon, is that correct?' the others nodded then went on their separate ways, leaving me alone and clueless in the abandoned hallway. When I reached my class, we were already preparing for a drill. 'If it even is a drill,' I thought to myself when the drills and lights started to go off. I climbed into one of the cabinets underneath the side tables, thinking that maybe this will be over soon. That's when I heard it; screams down the hall, the loud crashes of doors being flung open, the screams of a dying animal or creature that had been ripped apart. As if silenced by some unknown force, everything quieted as quickly as it had started. Everything, except the scattered breathing of my classmates surrounding me. We were all frightened from hearing the unknown sounds. It wasn't peaceful for long, because then they came in...
