Chapter 2 - Chapter One

The beginning

Zach

I woke up to my younger sister bouncing on my bed and shouting for me to get up. You'd expect me to be one of those brothers that would tell their little sibling to go away or push them off the bed, but my sister, Calia, she and I are actually pretty close. Our mom said when I was younger, I would beg and plead for a younger sister. One time they told me I was getting a brother, and apparently I cried and said I didn't want that one.

Being the older brother, all I did was pretend to be annoyed with her sometimes.

"Calia, go away," I grumbled as I turned over on my side. She stopped for a minute and gave me a nasty look. Her being 6 years old and all made her chubby face look kinda funny. As I burst out laughing, she took it kinda bad. Tears started to fill her hazel eyes and her blonde hair shadowed her face. Flustered, I jumped up and rushed towards her.

"Look, Calia! I'm up! Let's go play with Luna and Lucky!" It terrified me when she was upset, I hated it.

As she looked up at me, sniffling, she wiped her tears away and nodded her head. Taking her by her hand, we both went into the backyard to see our german shepherd, Luna, and our collie, Lucky. Calia and I saved them from freezing 6 months ago. Rushing to greet us, Lucky and Luna knocked each other down in an attempt to reach us. Laughing joyfully, I watched as Calia knelt down and kissed both dogs' faces, which got her lots in return.

Calia

When I woke up, it was just past 7:30 in the morning. With a sudden burst of joy, I knew that meant it was time to wake up my big brother. I pushed off my pink unicorn covers, slipping out of bed and dashing to Zach's room. His bed was bigger than mine, so it was kind of a hassle for me to get up there. With a few grunts and using the covers as ropes, I hauled myself up there. I giggled and started bouncing up and down, rolling around his feet to wake him up. I heard him groan, and I continued bouncing victoriously.

"Calia, go away," he mumbled, and I felt the energy sucked out of me. I wasn't that hurt, but tears welled up in my eyes anyway, dripping down my round face. When he noticed I was crying, he got up immediately and appeared at my side, with bright eyes and a smile.

"Look! Calia! I'm up! Let's go play with Luna and Lucky!" When he suggested going to play with our dogs, the excitement returned quickly. I smiled weakly and nodded, sniffing as I wiped my tears away. He took my small hand in his as he led me to the back door, guiding me outside as our german shepherd, Luna, and our collie, Lucky, blitzed through the fresh grass to greet us. I laughed happily as they put their cold noses all over me, covering my face in I-love-you licks. I wiped the slobber off and took off into the yard, Zach following suit as we ran around the yard, Luna and Lucky chasing with much joy.

Just as the fun was starting, momma called us into the house to get ready for school. I sighed in dismay and followed her call, scurrying back to the house. Luna and Lucky barged in front of me, eager to get to their daily routine breakfast. Daddy poured their food into labeled silver bowls and they ate it all up. I watched as Zach stole a piece of bacon and gave it to the dogs while mommy scowled him for doing so. Watching Zach sit back up, I jumped from my seat and rushed towards him.

"You didn't give me my good morning hug!" I exclaimed, throwing my arms in the air and stomping my foot on the ground. Zach gave me a pitiful look before stooping down and wrapping his arms around my torso, lifting me into the air as I squealed. He pulled me in for a quick, tight hug before setting me back down.

"Better?" He asked, smiling a little. Chuckling, he motioned me to follow him into my room. "What do you want to wear today?" he asked, pushing his dark brown hair out of his grey eyes. "How about your pink tutu and black tights? Maybe to go with your baby blue kitten sweater?" I nodded as he opened one of my drawers, emerging with a set of clothing items and setting them on my bed. He then proceeded to go into my closet and bring out my lucky yellow flats that he had bought me from JC Pennys about 6 months ago for my birthday. If I had to say it, I knew I was the luckiest little girl to have a brother like Zay.

"Zay? Why can't I just go to class with you?" I heard Calia say with unhappiness.

"Why don't you wanna go to class with your friends? You want to be in the same class as Kensie and Lulu, right?" Kensie and Lulu were the friends she had in her 1st-grade class, but I often get jealous because it feels like she kinda prefers them over me. She shrugged with a bored look as she watched me gather everything she needed.

"I just really miss you during the day and I barely get to see you." Bending down and taking her small hands in mine, I kissed her forehead and said: "No matter where I am in the building I am always with you." She squeezed my hands and whispered to me.

"Promise?" I held out my pinky finger and hooked it with her smaller one.

"I promise."
