Chapter 20 - The Nightmare Continues

Eva awoke to find herself in a dark hospital room. She faded in and out of consciousness as she was surrounded by eerie looking nurses. Suddenly, she began convulsing; which induced a seizure in the real world. As the scientists panicked and checked Eva's vitals; in the dream, Eva started screaming and snarling as if she were possessed by a demon. She bit one of the nurses and started spitting at the others. One of the Doctors rushed in and ordered them to put restraints on her. The angry and cruel voices were flooding her mind and she found herself drowning in them. The nurses injected her with tranquilizers until she calmed down. When they saw she stopped convulsing, they left the room to give her some space.

Eva opened her eyes and looked around. It was very dark and Eva hallucinated many frightening things; such as spiders crawling all over the walls and dark figures in the corners. The voices were still loud and overwhelming in her mind. Eva suddenly remembered why she was there; that she murdered Kiersten. She began to weep heavily. "Kiersten…Kiersten! I'm so sorry!" Eva said aloud as tears flooded her face. "What have I done?! How did this happen…?" Eva paused, then asked, "God…is Kiersten saved?" And to Eva's horror, there was no response. Only the continued angry whispers in Eva's mind. Eva screamed as she cried.

A week went by and fortunately the voices quieted down a bit. But they continued to taunt her; saying that she was next. That she had to suffer in order to save herself as well. Eva found herself sleeping on the floor instead of the bed at night, because she was cursed with anxiety every time she tried to rest. As if the flames of hell itself were coursing throughout her body. The voices told her to chew on her medications instead of taking them with water; and oh how bitter they were. What little rest she could get were disturbed by loud commands in her mind; such as to escape the hospital. She did as they commanded and made a run for it every chance she got; throwing herself against the exit doors. The nurses would drag her back to her room to tranquilize her, but she would only try again after she became conscious.

Another week went by and the voices dimmed down even more. Eva began to eat again and sleep in her bed. However, she was mute. She refused to talk to anyone. As she wandered the halls out of boredom, she saw what could only be described as a nightmarish scene. There were other people wandering the halls as well. Some were curled up in a ball, rocking back and forth. Others were screaming at the top of their lungs. Others still were pulling their own hair out. "I'm…in an asylum…" Eva thought to herself as she just came to this realization. Then thought, "I'm…crazy?"

After another month went by, Eva was as recovered as she could be. She took a shower and was dressed in normal clothing. She was then sent to her Doctor's office. "Eva, please have a seat." Her Doctor said as she shyly entered the office. She sat down quietly, keeping her gaze at the floor. "So, you had a pretty rough month and I know that's an understatement. But the reason being is because, well Eva…you have Paranoid Schizophrenia." Eva grew wide eyed. "About 1% of the population has this mental illness, so you're not alone. In fact, I want you to start going to therapy with others who have the same condition as you. But most importantly, I need you to take your medication every single day. For life." The Doctor said as he began to jot down some notes. "Doctor…how—did this happen?" Eva asked sadly. "Probably genetics." "What about the voices? Will they go away?" "Probably not. Now Eva, I know you've probably been wondering about this, but you won't be charged with murder by reason of insanity." The Doctor said as he continued to jot down some notes. "Bao…Mei…I—need to apologize to them!" "Unfortunately, they do not wish to see you anymore. All we can do is hope that they'll forgive you when they realize you had no real control over the situation. Now, with that being said, you won't be able to attend the funeral." Eva covered her face and began to cry. "Now, seeing as how you now have no where to go and you're underaged, we'll have to send you to an orphanage." "An orphanage?" Eva objected. "Do you have a better solution?" "No…" Eva said quietly. "Very well, then. Sit tight as we get an escort to take you there." The Doctor said nonchalantly.

Eva had no belongings to take with her. Only the clothes on her back. She followed her escort out of the hospital and took a step outside. It was the first time she felt the sun on her face for nearly two months. And although she felt warm, she felt numb. For Eva's life was now completely destroyed. She forgot about her memories of Leo; because she now fully believed that all along she's been ill. Eva became angry. She no longer believed in goodness, hope or God. So, she decided to shut the world out. As they drove, Eva sat emotionlessly as she watched familiar places pass her by. The school that she once spent time with her friends. The home that she lived in with the family she loved. And as she realized she lost absolutely everything, she felt dead inside. She let one last tear trickle down her face.

As they made it to the orphanage, Eva didn't bother to look at her surroundings. The escort filled out some paperwork and left, with another escort calling Eva's name and leading her to her new bedroom. There was another bed, so Eva assumed there would be a roommate she would have to put up with. Eva laid down on her new bed and closed her eyes. The staff was ordered to leave Eva alone for a while, considering the horrific trauma that she just went through. Eva felt cold; numb. But at least for the first time in a while, she was able to drift off to sleep in peace.
