Shauna sighed to herself as she road the tram back to her apartment. This had been the week from hell and she was ready to get home and take a long, relaxing, bubble bath. As she rode, she observed the people around her. Many of them were the same as her, they looked exhausted from a long days work and were ready for a break.
Another woman bumped into Shauna, the tram was completely packed with people as it was 5 on a Monday afternoon. She gave the woman a polite smile, the woman just gave her an ugly look and moved away. No matter how long she had lived and worked in the city, she could never understand why the people here could be so rude.
Shauna had been raised on her families farm and always had the dream of moving away and being a big shot. Things had not gone as smoothly as she had hoped, she had finally gotten an entry-level position at the largest magazine publishing company in the city. If you were in the industry, this was the place to be. She had been working there for a little over a year and finally had a chance to write an article in the upcoming publication.
This wasn't that big of an assignment, but Shauna was excited to have the opportunity. She smiled to herself as she looked down at her phone and saw the photo of herself with a handsome young man. Her boyfriend, Zach, would be proud of her and she was excited to give him the news. Shauna had wanted to surprise him, so she hadn't told him that she was on her way home.
As Shauna got off the tram, she saw several people standing around watching the tv's in the waiting area.
"There have been several reports of a new virus in Europe. So far, doctors have not been able to pin-point the cause of the virus or how to cure it once contracted. The death rate of this virus has been 100%."
Shauna kept walking and didn't stay to listen to the rest of the news report. They were always trying to scare the public and she had stopped believing everything that the media said a long time ago. As she walked down the sidewalk, she couldn't help but get giddy over revealing her big news to Zach.
Shauna made her way up to the third floor of her apartment complex. As she turned the key to the door, she was surprised to see that the lights in the living room were off. "Zach?" She got no resposne, so she assumed that he had gone out. Today was his day off from working at a local high-end restaurant. Zach was an amazing chef and would often cook her beautiful dinners.
She took her jacket off and hung it up in the closet and grabbed the mail on the counter. She started flipping through it as she made her way to the bedroom, she really needed that bath. As Shauna opened the door, she was shocked to see Zach in a heavy make-out session with another woman.
Shauna dropped the mail and screamed. Her first reaction was to run, ignoring Zach as he yelled after her. She ran to the closet, grabbed her jacket, and opened the door to leave.
"Shauna, it's not what you think! Where are you going?" Zach stood behind her begging her to stop.
She turned around and all she said was, "Don't come find me." At that, she ran out of the apartment complex to never return.
