Shauna had run over to her mother's side and was checking for a pulse. Her father's death must have been the final straw for the fragile woman. All Shauna could do was hold onto her mother's body and cry.
Zach walked over and put his arms around Shauna, but she couldn't feel him. All she could feel was the pain from losing both her parents in such a short time-span. She finally passed out from exhaustion and grief. This wasn't how Zach wanted their reunion to go, as soon as he heard about the Zombies, his thoughts had gone straight to Shauna.
He had packed up everything he owned of value, and had made his way towards where he knew she would be. It had taken him longer than usual with the rioters and abandoned cars on the highway. As soon as he had seen her, his heart had jumped. This was his one true love and there she was, right in front of him. The moment wouldn't last with the sound of the shotgun going off and he knew that Shauna needed him now.
He wrapped her up and carried her to her bedroom. Before he put her on the bed, he took her into the bathroom and started scrubbing the blood off of her. As he was removing her blood-stained clothes, he suddenly was jerked up from behind.
As Jonathan came up to Shauna's house, he knew something was wrong. First, the front door was wide open and there was no noise coming from inside. He immediately made his way in and listened, he heard heavy footsteps upstairs so he made his way up there. As he made it to the landing, he come smell blood so he hurried down to where he knew Shauna's bedroom was. Growing up, he had spent many summer days here and knew his way around the house. Shauna's bathroom door was open and there was a man standing over her and removing her clothes!
Jonathan ran over and jerked him up and was about to ask him what the hell he was doing when the man put a finger to his lip and pointed at Shauna. Jonathan looked down and saw she was covered in blood and grabbed the man by the front of his shirt. He whispered furiously, "what have you done to her?"
The man stayed calm and whispered back, "let's get her in bed and talk about it downstairs. If you're here to help, we have a lot of work to do."
As Shauna slept, the two men worked in silence. They stayed up all night cleaning up the bedroom and her mother. They didn't want to do anything with the body, so they took the woman outside and placed her in the barn. Zach said a prayer over her body that her soul would find rest in the after-life.
When Shauna awoke, she felt completely numb. Perhaps last night had been a terrible dream so she got up, took a nice long shower, then made her way downstairs. As she made her way into the kitchen, Zach was cooking breakfast while Jonathan sipped coffee at the kitchen table.
She coldly looked at her ex-lovers back, "What are you doing here?" Shauna said this with as much menace as she could muster.
Neither man had heard her come downstairs, at her voice Jonathan jumped up and wrapped her into a tight huge. "Shauna... I am so sorry" she could see the tears in his eyes and she leaned into his embrace. Right now, she really needed the comfort.
Shauna began to weep in Jonathan's chest as the memories of what she had seen hit her again. Zach just watched from the stove as he continued making breakfast. He thought to himself that he had been an idiot and perhaps he had lost Shauna for good.
Zach finished breakfast and put three plates on the table. He also poured Shauna a cup of coffee just the way she liked it, black. Since the two hadn't moved he coughed, "um... would you like breakfast?" he completely ignored Shauna's earlier outburst about what he was doing there.
The three sat down and ate in silence, Shauna didn't know how to approach this situation especially with Zach around. She decided that right now she didn't have the mental capacity to confront him and that she would not be the first one to speak.
After several silent minutes, Jonathan was the first one to break the silence. He looked pointedly at Zach, "soooo who exactly are you and what are you doing here?"
Shauna almost spit out her coffee, she had never mentioned Zach to Jonathan and realized that he had no idea who this man was.
"Well, I'm here because I wanted to make sure Shauna was okay with the craziness going on in the world. As far as who I am... let's just say I'm an idiot who wants to make things right." Zach looked at Shauna for a second then continued to finish his breakfast.
