Chapter 4 - Calm Before the Storm

Shauna was the only one in the coffee shop as she had the closing shift that night. She loved working here, the smell of coffee and the music had her dancing around as she swept the floor. Suddenly, she was gently grasped around the waist. She spun around to see that it was Jonathan.

She had seen the way he looked at her when he didn't realize that she was watching. Shauna hadn't minded the looks, she was feeling the same way about him. Her frustrations had been growing as he didn't seem to want to make a move.

Jonathan put the broom to the side and started dancing with her. They both laughed as he sang along to the song because they both knew he was a terrible singer. As the song came to an end, he dipped her down low and slowly pulled her back up. Shauna's breath caught as he leaned forward, but instead of kissing her he whispered in her ear "do you realize how beautiful you are when you smile?"

As he began to pull away, Shauna turned to him and passionately kissed him. Jonathan returned the fevor and it was like no one else in the world mattered but those two in that second. Their kiss deepened and they began pulling at each other's clothes. They had wanted this for so long, but suddenly the emergency alarm went off on the radio. The two jumped apart and listened to the news broadcast.

"This is an urgent report and not a test, I repeat not a test." The broadcaster sounded as though he was about to have a panic attack.

"We have a report here saying that the recent virus outbreak has been covered up by our government. This outbreak has actually spread to over 90% of the nation and we are estimating that over three million people will die by the end of the week. We have also received reports of those who have died, are spreading the virus from their graves. I know this sounds far-fetched, but it seems that these people are rising from their graves and are hunting living humans. This sounds like a story out of the sci-fi universe, but it is very much real. Now, we will hear from leading scientist Dr. Bennett."

Jonathan and Shauna stared at each other in amazement. What was going on out there? Why had they not heard of this before now? They both understood as each ran out of the front door and made their way to their families. This was an unprecidented turn of events, but they needed to make sure their families were okay.

Shauna didn't see Jonathan for several days after, she and her father worked to fortify their farm house and stock supplies. Luckily, they had plenty of animals and crop land that they would be able to look after themselves in the future, but they wanted to stock up. As Shauna went to the grocery store, her father went to the local gun shop.

The grocery store was chaos, people were running around and putting anything that they could find in their carts. Shauna quickly grabbed a cart and rushed through the aisles to grab supplies. As she was going to the check-out with her cart full of non-perishables, there was a gunshot in the store. The cashier looked like a deer in headlights, "just take it and run." Shauna didn't think twice, she ran with her cart to her truck parked outside. She rushed to throw all of the groceries in as she heard more gunshots and screams.

Shauna jumped in and drove as fast as she could home. If things were already this bad, how much worse was it going to get? As she ran into the house, her mother was sitting at the kitchen table crying. Shauna's mother had never been the strongest and did not handle stress well. She ran over to her and enveloped her into a hug. "Everything is going to be okay mama." Her mother just continued to weep and wouldn't speak.

Her father made it back from the gun shop safe and sound, but he mentioned seeing rioters in the streets already looting. "Shauna, I'm so sorry but the coffee shop was hit by looters... I'm afraid there isn't much left there."

Shauna decided it was time to give Jonathan a call, "Jonathan did you hear?" Jonathan sighed on the other end of the phone, "I heard, it's going to be okay." The two talked for a few minutes and Jonathan had to leave to go get provisions for himself. His mother and father had decided to go stay with his aunt in the next state so he would be alone for a while.
