They had no internet access with how far they were from town so they had to rely on the local radio news station and the satellite tv they had. Slowly, news stations began to fade away until there was only one left.
"We are saddened to say that our fellow stations have no survived through this pandemic, we have reports that they have been overrun with Zombies and that many of our colleagues have subcummbed to the virus. We now know that it is transmitted through the exchange of body fluids and the most common way is through being bitten. We never know when our last broadcast will be, so we will work to continue offering you a glimpse into the outside world."
Shauna was tranfixed on the tv screen, she wondered how her friends in the city had faired through this. The reports all said that the major cities were the first hit by the Zombies, and they had heard from friends who lived closer to town that there were people driving through and confirming this. Her mother, being fragile, had started locking herself in her bedroom all day. Shauna barely saw her anymore and she would not open the door no matter how hard she tried.
"Shauna honey, I have to head into town for a few things." She looked at her father in fear, they had avoided going to town in fear of the riots and shootings.
"Dad, why are you going to town?" Shauna was immediately defensive. They had food, fresh water, protection, and the farm even had it's own gas tank. If the power were to go out, they had a hook up that would allow the stove and heat to be powered by gas.
"It's your mother... she ran out of her anxiety medication yesterday and I don't think she's going to make it without it. I've already spoken to the pharmacist and they told me if I could go now, they would be able to get me some out of the pharmacy." Her father kept walking as he grabbed his shotgun he kept in the kitchen. "I will call you when I'm on the way home."
Shauna didn't want him to go but she had no choice, this was his decision. She jumped up and gave her father a hug before he walked out of the door, "please be careful."
"I will honey" he hugged her back even tighter. She watched as her best friend walked out of the door.
Shauna called her dad for the hundreth time. It had been twelve hours since he had walked out of the door and she couldn't stand it anymore. She went and grabbed the glock out of the cabinet in the living room and made her way outside.
As she was driving into town, she gave Jonathan a call. "Jon, I think something has happened to my dad."
"Shauna, I'll be there in an hour. Go home and I'll meet you there." She could hear the plea in his voice.
"Jonathan, go to my house and I'll meet you there. If I don't make it back... look after my mom." Shauna started weeping, it finally hit her that she may never see her father again. She hung up and drove faster towards town, as she pulled up to the pharmacy, her worst fears came to light.
Her dad was laying outside the pharmacy bleeding, Shauna jumped out of the truck and ran towards him. As she grabbed onto him, she could tell that he had been shot several times and that he had been dead for a while. She couldn't give into her grief, she knew that those people who had done this were still in town so she drug her father to the truck and was barely able to get him into the truck bed.
As Shauna sped home, she let the grief wash over her. She cried until the tears would no longer come and she didn't know how she was going to make it through all of this without her father. Her thoughts went to Jonathan, he should be about 30 minutes away now, and he would be able to help her. He had such a clear and even head, he would know what to do.
Once she returned home, she knew that she wouldn't be able to face her father's body. Shauna made her way upstairs and knocked on the door to her parent's bedroom. Her mother still didn't answer so Shauna grabbed a credit card and shimmied the door open. She gently walked over to her mother who was just staring at the wall, unblinking. "Mom, I have to tell you something. Dad... Dad is gone."
Shauna's tears renewed and her mother picked her head up and looked at her with no emotion. What was wrong with her mother? She knew that she wasn't strong, but this was ridiculous!
Just as Shauna was about to repeat what she said, the door bell rang. "Mom, that's Jonathan, I'll be back." Shauna got up off the bed and at the doorway, glanced back at her mother. She had sat up in the bed and had her head between her knees and was silently wheeping. "I'll be right back." She repeated before hurrying down the stairs.
Shauna through open the front door, "Jonathan I'm so glad..." she stopped in mid sentence. The person in front of her was NOT Jonathan. Suddenly, a gunshot went off upstairs and Shauna's face went white. She immediately turned and scrambled her way up the stairs. As she ran into her parent's bedroom, she saw her mother slumped on the floor with a shotgun and a pool of blood around her.
