As Shauna walked down the streets and looked around her, she realized that she wasn't happy. Zach had been the only thing in her life that brought her joy. Even though she had just gotten her own segment, it didn't really bring her joy. She realized as she saw all the buildings, trash, and sound that she detested living in the city.
Shauna's life was completely thrown into perspective, she realized what she needed to do. After flagging down a taxi, she jumped in. "Where to sweetie?" the older gentleman gave her a smile. Shauna smiled back, yes she was making the right choice. "To the closest car rental."
Shauna pulled up to her parents quaint country home a little after midnight. She had called her mother as soon as she had gotten a car rental, so they knew she was coming. Letting herself into the dark house, she made her way upstairs to her childhood bedroom.
Her mom must have updated the room for an adult since she had been away. Shauna hated to admit it, but she hadn't been home in many years. Her childhood pictures and trophies were still there, but the decor matched that of which an adult woman would want to use. Shauna sighed, her mother must have been holding out hope that Shauna would still come visit one day.
As she climbed into bed, she checked her phone. She had over a hundred text messages and missed calls from Zach. How could he do this to her? They had been together for nearly five years and had often talked about getting married and starting a family together. Shauna steeled her resolve, clicked on Zach's contact information, and hit block.
A week had already passed and Shauna was drinking her morning coffee with her father watching the morning news. Shauna had always gotten along better with her father, they sat there in silence both drinking their black coffee. He just seemed to understand when Shauna wanted to talk and when she just needed his calming presence.
"In today's news, it seems as though the first victim of the virus has arrived here. We have found that they had direct contact with one of the first that died overseas while on vacation. From the relatives of the victim, they had a high fever and loss of appetite leading up to their death. We will have more information on the 5 o'clock news tonight."
Shauna thought back to when she first heard this news, it was right before she had caught Zach cheating on her. Now that she looked back, she didn't even give him a chance to explain. However, she wasn't the type of woman who was going to let someone use and abuse her. Today, she had plans to go to town and look for a part time job. She had been working on the family farm to help them, but felt that she needed more to take up her time.
Shauna walked down main street looking for help wanted ads. She noticed a cute coffee shop that hadn't been there during her childhood. It stood out from the other shops by it's modern design compared to the outdated store fronts around it. As she looked into the window, she saw that they had a now hiring sign.
Shauna walked out of the coffee shop sipping a delicious espresso and feeling better about herself. She had a soft-interview with the assistant manager that went extremely well! They had scheduled her for an interview with the store owner the next day. While she loved working on her family farm, she felt that getting out and meeting new people would be good for her.
By the time Shauna got back home from town, the 5 o'clock news was already playing on the tv in the living room. "We have our first report on a victim of the virus who has survived. The man was pronounced dead on the scene, but it appears now that the man was in a deep coma and has suffered brain damage. It has been reported that he bit several EMS staff prior to being restrained, doctors now have the man sedated and are observing his vitals for any clues on how to create a vaccine for the virus."
