Chapter 3 - Pandemic or Apocalypse?

Shauna double-checked herself in the mirror before going to her interview. She wanted to make a good impression but didn't want to seem as though she was too desperate. After checking her make-up one last time, she headed back into town.

The town itself was small, most people in the area lived miles away on their own little farms so the community was like a family. In total, there were less than a thousand people who lived within 50 miles of town.

Shauna walked into the coffee shop and got a blast from the past. "Jonathan! How are you?" The young red-headed man turned around and smiled when he saw Shauna.

"Shauna! I didn't know you were in town visiting." He gave her a friendly hug and had a huge smile on his face.

"Actually, I have moved back home and am applying for a job here." Shauna gave him a smile back but felt awkward. She felt like a failure moving back in with her parents, but knew that overall it was for the best. When she left, she had cut ties with all of her friends and had honestly been a little snotty about being a big-shot in the city.

"Oh! That's a pleasant surprise, wait are you here for an interview?" Jonathan kept the smile on his face eventhough he felt the awkwardness from Shauna.

Shauna was glad that Jonathan didn't push her for any more information, "Yes, I am! I came in here yesterday and loved the atmosphere so I applied for the open position"

"Well, let's sit down and get started then." Jonathan pulled a chair out at the table beside them, "I am actually the owner." He gave Shauna a wink and she couldn't help but blush a little.

The interview turned more into a catch-up session between the two. When growing up, they had been friends throughout school and Jonathan was one of the friends that Shauna had ghosted after moving to the city. She was relieved to see that he didn't hold that against her and actually asked her questions about the big city life.

After an hour of chatting, Jonathan looked at his watch. "Oh I am so sorry but I have a meeting I need to run to with a distributor, I'll see you tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock!"

Shauna gave him a geniunine smile, "See you then!"

The next few weeks were amazing for Shauna, she loved her job at the coffee shop and the friendship she had with Jonathan. Little did anyone in that small town know, the world was crumbling around them.

"Mr. President, we have the reports that you requested." The president had been in his study staring out the window. He never expected to see something like this in his lifetime, "Go ahead, what are the updates."

"It seems as though society has collapsed in Europe, as you requested we have kept all that information out of the media and have limited what the citizens can find online. The virus is spreading all over the east and it is only a matter of days before the entire continent has collapsed." The assistant was nervous for what he was about to reveal next.

"Also, we have tried to contain all of the outbreaks domestically but it seems as though it is spreading too quickly. We have no way of knowing which deaths over the past month have been due to the virus, and sir, it's true."

The president turned around at this statement. There had been rumors that those who died from the virus would reanimate after a period of time and were dragging themselves out of their graves. The time frame was different for each person, some could be in a day and others over a month. Once they reanimated, they were near impossible to kill and would feast on the living. "Zombies..." the president turned back around and continued contemplating.

"Mr. President, what should we do about the media? It is hard enough to control outside sources, but it is becoming impossible to control those domestically." The assistant was used to the president having answers to everything.

"Stop controlling the media, go to defensive forces and have them make preparations for my family and I, we are going to go into the bomb shelters." The president closed his eyes and seemed to be praying to himself.

The assistant left the office and immediately made his way to the proper people to relay the president's requests. He also pulled out his cell phone and called his wife, "get our emergency supplies and get the kids and make your way to the White House now." He hung up the phone and continued on his way, he would make sure that his family was safe no matter what.
