Marcus got there just in time to hear the words that broke his sister's heart.
"..why?" Genny choked out the question.
"I've never given you the wrong signal have I? All your thoughts were just in your head. We grew up together and you're Marcus's little sister, Marcus is my brother, that makes you my sister too."
" Don't give me that, you know I never saw you as a brother Jason Wu!" Genny exclaimed
" Then please don't delude yourself anymore." He requested "Marcus take her home." Jason ordered, turning to Marcus.
Marcus didn't make a fuss. He knew that Jason was already being very kind by explaining to her. If it were anyone else he wouldn't bother at all. But he was still a little angry at Jason for letting her down so brutally. He held unto Genny who had broken into tears and sent her to his car to take her home.
Jason sighed and went back in for dinner.
----
That night, while sitting up in his bed, Jason watched as Karen fell asleep before settling down to sleep himself.
Some time into the night Karen woke up in fear. She didn't make a sound but it was evident on her face how scared she was. She got up and walked over to Jason's bed to make sure he was still there. After verifying that he was in his bed, she crawled in under the blankets with him and went back to bed.
----
Jason woke up in the morning and felt like he was being held down. He drew the blankets to find a sleeping Karen with her arms wrapped around him. Jason patted her head and decided to keep lying down in order not to wake her and let her sleep longer. Jason worried that her attachment to him might hurt her in the future, thinking of Genny, but he failed to realise that as much as she was getting attached to him, he was getting just as attached to her.
When Karen finally woke up and they both headed downstairs for breakfast, Jason made a call to get assistant Kwan to get he and Karen's marriage registered the very next day. He also ordered for an invitation card to be sent to his grandfather so that he'd know the event was taking place. There would be no wedding, but he just had to make sure the time and place were recorded by his grandfather. He'd prepared a ring for himself too.
Jason felt that Karen was much better today. She had gotten rid of that dull look on her face and would sometimes smile softly. She also started whispering a few words again and addressed Jason and Nanny Jo by their names. Jason was relieved.
Marcus came over in the afternoon. While Karen was drawing on the porch outside the living room, watching them from time to time, the two gentlemen took a stroll outside.
"Don't you want to know how Genny is doing?" He questioned Jason.
"Do I have the right to show concern after yesterday?" Jason answered with another question.
"I have to say I was a bit upset for her. And she cried herself to sleep last night. I feel very useless as her big brother."
"I'm glad you realise that you're useless" Jason joked with a straight face.
Marcus kicked him in retaliation.
" I'm very surprised at you though. You must have given the old master the shock of his life with your marriage plans" Marcus said.
Jason grinned in satisfaction.
"But have you thought about what you're going to do with the girl?" Are you going to divorce her later whether she gets better or not? Wouldn't it hurt her if you abandon her later when you decide to get a proper wife?"
" I won't get one, but I'm going to make sure she gets better, then we can separate"
"That's not really a plan. Did you really think this through before making the moves?"
Jason didn't answer. The truth was that he had indeed been reckless. There was so much he hadn't considered when he brought Karen home, but it had felt so right to him so far, he was determined to see this through till the end.
