Salem had the hotel owner come to a back room.
"Sit down." He said. "We need to ask you a few questions."
The hotel owner sat down, sweating profusely.
"Let's start off easy, shall we?" Salem said. "Why are there secret rooms running through the entirety of the hotel with holes in the walls for peeping Toms?"
The hotel owner went still. "Those were made initially for staff to deliver food for rooms." He said. "But then the slavers started using them for acquiring targets."
"So the slavers do have a connection to you?" Salem asked.
"Yes." He didn't dare lie to the Inquisitors. "I pay a protection fee and they pick out a few people for their slaves."
"Why were they spying on us?" Alina jumped in.
"They wanted to gauge your strength and see if either of your two girlfriends would leave alone." He said.
"Well, Lana killed one of the spies." Salem said. "They don't seem to be that strong."
"Most of the spies are ordinary people." He said.
It occured to Salem that he couldn't entirely trust this man.
Salem took off his top hat and changed the electrodes within it to detect heartbeat, blood pressure, and spikes in neural impulses.
He put it on the hotel owner's head. "Do you know where Rothschild is?" He asked, watching the LCD screen on the front displaying truth or lie.
"No." He said.
The screen said 'TRUTH'
"But I know someone who does."
'TRUTH'
"A man by the name of Womble is a direct underling of Rothschild."
'TRUTH'
"He is staying in room 404."
'LIE'
"There's no fourth floor." Salem said. "And he's probably not in room 404."
The hotel manager paled. "He's actually in a different hotel."
'TRUTH'
"Which hotel?" Salem asked. "And what room?"
"I don't know which room, but I know he is staying in the Sunset hotel which is the closest hotel to the city gates."
'TRUTH'
"Don't tell them I sent you or my life is forfeit."
'TRUTH'
Salem took back his hat and changed it back to it's normal settings.
"We'll get to the bottom of this." Salem said. "You're safe, for now. But if you run, I'll kill you."
Salem's eyes told the hotel manager he wasn't kidding.
He gulped hard.
Salem turned and gestured for the girls to follow.
At the door he turned back to the manager. "Oh, and we were never here." He said.
The manager hurriedly nodded in agreement.
"Let's go." They finally left the building and turned towards the Sunset hotel.
