Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Life at the Farm

"There you are Kia." Lea yelled as she ran to him from the middle of the guild hall.

"I'm sorry, I was busy getting some information about Black Talon. So did you get us a room and do you know when we can see the mayor?" Kia said with a slight chuckle as he rubbed the back of his head.

"The mayor is out of town for the time being. He should be back tomorrow and they only had one room free I guess a lot of the rooms are being rearranged." Lea said as she joined Kia's side. "By the way, I heard something interesting. It's a job and I may have accepted it."

"Why we aren't here for anything else but meet with the mayor also I call big spoon." Kia said in a teasing voice.

Lea's faced turned red and without hesitation said, "You can sleep on the couch okay." They then began to walk to the door that led back into town. Kia laughed to Lea's embarrassment and then asked her about the job she had accepted while she was at the front counter. "That's the thing I took it because I had a feeling you would be interested there have been troubles at a nearby farm, I guess there is an Ether monster there."

Kia looked at Lea in confusion "An Ether monster? Those should only live in deep caves in the mountains how weird. First the dragon then the serpent now this."

"That's what I was thinking also. What was really strange was I also heard some monsters had the Black Talon logo branded on them." Lea said looking at Kia in a serious manner.

"How strange I bet there has to be an outside force helping them but who and why. I guess the only way to find out is by going and checking out that monster ourselves." Kia said as they walked down the town's streets to the towering gate that leads to the farms outside the town limits.

"I agree it also gives me a chance to show you some light magic. Once you get the gist of it you will be able to learn it through your grimoire on your own." Lea said with a smile that made Kia smile just by looking at it. The two walked a few miles outside the town's walls until they found a small wooden cabin with a stable and wheat fields all around it. "This must be it." Lea said. The two of them open the gate and walked to the porch of the cabin. On the way Kia noticed small ether spots on the fully-grown wheat. Another thing he noticed was the trails that were made into the fields. The trails went into multiple paths but all joined into a spot in the middle of the field. Kia couldn't see anything in the circular spot but sensed a dangerous presence in the middle of it. Lea and Kia walked up on the porch and knocked on the door.

The doorknob began to giggle and the door slowly crept open in the doorway stood a tall bearded man with a straw hat. He was wearing old farmers clothing and had a very rough hands. "Hello my name is Yin how may I help you kids?" The man said in an old gentle voice.

"Hello sir sorry for the sudden arrival but we heard you were having trouble with a monster." Kia said respectfully.

"Yes, we are actually. The beast has made my wheat fields into his home. I try to scare it off but it seems to be very aggressive."

"How did it get here?" Lea said curiously to the old man.

"I saw some members of Black Talon and they demanded money from me and when I refused, I found this beast in my fields 3 days later." Yin said as his smile started to fade away.

"Don't worry about it sir we will deal with the monster and also deal with Black Talon so they won't bother you again." Lea said with a reassuring smile. "Let's get going Kia." At that moment Kia and Lea waved to the farmer and went to the wheat field. The wheat field had grown up to Kia's and Lea's shoulders. The two of them both took different paths to try to surround the monster so it wouldn't be able to escape. As they were twenty feet away, they both stopped and looked at each other. "Kia, I have a feeling we aren't the ones ambushing."

"I know what you mean." At that moment the wheat around both of them began to move pushing them into the middle of the circular clearing where they looked down and noticed five shattered eggs scattered throughout the clearing. Kia looked at Lea with a sort of humorous smirk and said "Seems like things are going to get a little more interesting it's about time I had a good workout." Kia reached to his side and grabbed a plain dagger that he has been keeping on him since they left Kia's barn.

The movement in the field began to move closer to Kia and Lea and before they made it into the clearing they stopped as fast as they started. Leaving the area calm and steady. Then out of nowhere all of the wheat began to shift showing all of the movements in the wheat move all to one spot and after they all joined up a big monster crawled out of the ground. The monster was double the size of a fully-grown horse with sharp black rocks jetting out from its flesh. It had purple shining eyes and a purple stream of light traveling throughout the rocks and cracks that were throughout the monster's body. Then five babies with smaller rocks appeared around the mother. These monsters were half the size of Kia and Lea but still had rocks throughout their body.

The five baby ether monsters split off to attack Kia and Lea as the mother stayed back to watch. Three went for Kia and two went for Lea splitting the two apart preventing them from working together.

Lea looked to Kia ready for the monsters to attack at any moment. "You ready Kia? Try not to die before I can get you back to my village." Lea said in a joking manner.

With a grin Kia said "Don't worry about me they are just babies after all just try to watch out for the mother." At that moment the babies lunged forward. Kia blocked the hit but the force pushed him into the wheat farther from Lea. Being in the wheat gave him a strong disadvantage due to the lack of visualization he now had. As he looked around him, he saw movement charging to him and as it got closer one of the babies jumped out. With Kia being ready this time he ducked down to reveal the monster's belly the weakest point. As the monster passed over him, he turned his blade and jammed it into the monster's heart from underneath and slide the blade through the monster's chest. The monster then slid to a stop on the ground lying in a forming puddle of purple blood. Kia being forced to the ground by the momentum hurried up to his feet. Preparing for the next attack.

After seeing how their sibling died due to the direct attack the monsters ran in different directions hoping to attack Kia from both sides leaving at least one side unguarded. As the two monsters jumped at Kia with full intent to kill Kia popped a little smirk and rolled in the direction the monsters weren't coming from. Before the two monsters collided into one another Kia took three small needle shurikens out of a small holster on his leg and threw them at one of the monsters as it was still in the air. The one needle pierced through his gem like eye and the other two stuck into its chest killing it instantly. As the two monsters collided the still living monster began to swirl to the ground revealing its belly. Kia dug his foot into the ground and in a blink of an eye he dashed in the direction of the falling monster digging his dagger into its chest forcing the monster down to the ground even faster. Jabbing the dagger even farther into its chest. When the monster finally stopped struggling Kia yanked the dagger out and began his way back to the clearing.

As Kia was in his fight Lea was fighting the other two babies. After Kia was pushed into the wheat the two that stayed behind began to circle Lea to find a way to take her down. The two stopped next to each other facing Lea. They both paused for a moment and then charged to her. Lea ducked and slid under them and turned around facing their backs. Using the time, she had before they could get ready for another attack Lea stood up and with the monsters to her side, she raised her hand having her palm face them.

She then began to speak in a powerful tone "Mighty sun spirit hear my command. Grant me your power" As she continued with her spell small orbs of light began to form on her fingers with one growing light in the palm of her hand. The light on her palm tethered to the other five orbs on her fingers. "I use this light to vanquish my enemies and protect my allies. I call upon the javelin of light." As she finished her chanting the orb on her hand formed a sharp blade of light in her palm. She then shouted "FIRE" and the sharp blade shot out of her hand extending in size as it flew through the air and pierced through the first monsters head killing it instantly. She then looked at the other monster and raised her hand in the air and ran to the monster shouting "BLINDING LIGHT" her hand then emitted a light blinding the monster and making it unable to see. Lea then grabbed the blade from the holster on her waist and jabbed it into the monster's neck forcing the monster backwards struggling to escape. Lea then placed her right hand from the blade to the monster's chest and yelled "Burning pulse" her hand began to emit a burning light burning through the monster's chest slowly killing it. As the monster struggled less and less it then stopped moving. Lea slowly stood up pulling the blade out of the monster's neck causing a steady stream of purple blood to flow from the open wound.

"Why is the blood purple?" Lea asked questioningly.

"It's because it's either these are the only types of monsters that have hearts that can produce ether from all the minerals they have been eating from the earth." Kia said stepping through the wheat covered in purple blood.

"So, taking a guess your battle went well?" Lea said with a smile.

"Of course, it did. Now for my question. Why did you have to do the chant for the first spell you did but not the others?" Kia said with a grin.

"It's because the first chant was to call forth the light magic from the sun after that you temporarily have the power and won't have to call for it again until you have no more use for it. However, in order to use the magic, you have to have a trace of the magic inside of you or you can't call for it."

"Then how did you use the fire? Also, since you call light from the sun is it weaker at night?" Kia said as he walked over to her side.

"Yes, the light magic is weaker when the sun is down but it still has a trace in you so you can still use it just won;t be as strong. I also wasn't using fire I was using a spell and focusing enough of the light magic to your hand it can begin to burn like it's light from the sun and can burn through the things it touches." Lea said looking towards Kia and putting her blade away. Even when the sun is down it seems like you have is a sun inside your soul somehow, I doubt if its day or night your power would be affected.

Kia straightened up and with a questioning look said "Why does it feel like we forgot something?" At that moment the mother shot out a ground trembling roar. "That's it we forgot to get dinner." Kia said snapping his fingers grinning.

Lea turned to the mother and said "lets deal with this then we can go get food and drinks at the tavern."

Kia grinned "Agreed".

The two charged to the mother with their daggers pulled and darted to her belly. Both blades slide off the rock like belly leaving not even a scratch behind. Lea and Kia took another chance this time attacking from both sides at the same time. Kia attacked the mothers from the left attacking her front leg then to her under belly. Lea charged from the right jumping on the monsters back slashing at the cracks in the monster's thick armour still doing no damage to the monster's protection. The monster slightly lowered herself and emitted a purple light of ether burning Lea and Kia forcing them to push back and regroup at the mother's side.

"Seems like her armour is to thick for our blades." Kia said looking at the monster. He then gave off a slight grin and said "looks like we will have to earn our food tonight."

"Let's see how she likes this." Lea said as she raised her hand to call for her spell, but before she could call for the light javelin the sun set. "Damn my spell will be to weak without the sun."

"What now then?" Kia said thinking.

"Let's test something I want you to raise your hand and call for a light javelin and don't do the chant."

"The sun is down though and what about needing to call for the power first."

"Just do it I don't have time to explain okay just raise your hand and feel as if the sun is touching you and call for the javelin of light" Lea said quickly.

Kia raised his hand and as he did his hand began to glow. The glow had double the strength that Lea had in her hand even with the sun out. As the light began to get brighter Kia looked to the monster and said "Javelin of light." three piercing lights shot out of his hand stabbing through the monster's outer shell as if it was paper. This caused the monster to fall to the ground screaming in pain and slowly bleeding to death as the spears of light faded away.

"That was amazing." Kia said looking at his hand with a big smile.

"It really was but you may have to learn to control the power so you don't use to much of it." If that is even possible. His power was more powerful than our top elders ever could be. An average person has a fraction of the spirit they are bonded with however he seems to be just overflowed with the spirit's power. Lea then shook herself from day dreaming and look to Kia "That was a steady stream power looks like you don't need to call for the sun's power but I bet if you did then you just may destroy the whole country." Lea said with a sort of worried smile.

Kia looked to his hands and thought of the woman in her dreams. She said I made the spirit's power my own I guess that may not have been as much of a dream as I thought. Hopefully I will get a chance to ask her more questions. Kia looked from his hands to Lea and then to the monster he walked to the monster and kneeled at its leg. "Lea look over here." Kia said speaking to Lea but not looking away from what he found.

Lea moved towards Kia and saw exactly what he was looking at and with a serious expression "Well that is very interesting."

Kia stood up and smiled to Lea "Lets go tell the farmer he can return to his fields safely."

They both went and met with the farmer at his cabin. "Thank you very much for dealing with that monster." Yin said bowing his head in respect to Kia and Lea.

"We are just happy to help and just so you know it was one mother and 5 babies seems like she was pregnant when she was brought here." Lea said speaking to Yin.

"Do you think it was Black Talon?" Yin said worried.

"It's fine you won't have anymore monster problems like that or Black Talon problems soon we will deal with it." Kia said to the farmer in confidence. The farmer thanked Lea and Kia and treated them to some tea and food. After a few hours they decided it was time to go back to the guild hall. "Looks like we will be going to the tavern tomorrow for dinner." Kia said laughing "Thanks again for the meal and feel free to sell the ether monsters blood and body parts it will make up for the lost crops and then some." Kia and Lea waved to the farmer and began to walk back to the guild hall to go to bed and wait for the mayor when he decides to make it back from wherever he went off to.

The one thing Lea and Kia didn't notice was two figures off in the distance that watched their fight with the ether monsters.
