Chapter 14 - A Gift to a Friend

The root in Gordans hand started to melt away spitting sparks onto the ground, the roots drew back from the thing that it had labeled as hazardous to the mission. This prevented it from let's say, straying into a forest fire and burning, it was both a strength and a weakness of this spell. Not many were used to dealing with this so they would not do anything like Gordan had, he was someone that would never shy away from the unorthodox if it helped him gain the advantage.

In this case he had cast flame onto the palm of his hand to cause the largest effect on the vine. This idea was not only unorthodox it was also dangerous, but for those who were able to pull it off it was the fastest way to deal with Nature's Rage.

The vines had recoiled but Gordan took another step forward, he was satisfied that he was healthy enough to deal a spell of at least low level. And now came the part were he really tested his recovery rate, he had to do the same thing he had just done only about five hundredish times.

=Sigh=

Gordan put his hand on his forehead, even when he was healthy this would be a chore and a half, but he guessed it was like pulling weeds, really annoying and time consuming but in the end worth it. So after taking a deep breath he began 'weeding' one after another he pulled the vines and burned them up without a trace to be left behind, five, then ten, then fifteen...

After what seemed like an hour he finally pulled the last vine out, burning it to a crisp. He reached up his dirt covered hand and wiped his forehead with his arm. He looked down at the host which was now just a jumble of vines protecting the core.

Lacing his hand in fired he plunged his hand into the tangle and pulled the core out with little effort, emedeatly the vines stopped squirming around.

Gordan fell to the ground exhausted, he felt like his wounds were reopening every time he took a breath. This was why he tried to avoid magic it always made him feel like his insides were being poked by millions of needles, which was never a pleasant experience.

Looking at the sky Gordan saw that he had been much longer than he had expected, he slowly roze to his feet at the protest of his limbs. He was glad that he hadn't used magic earlier, or he most likely wouldn't have woken up at all. Still gripping the core in his hand Gordan made his way back over the fence feeling like he had forgoten something slightly important, but if he needed to remember he would, that was usually how things went in his experience.

The walk over to the cooking fires felt like an eternity, he was starting to remember again that he hadn't eaten in a week. As he came into the clearing he saw Leech and his mother eating som boar-bear meat on skewers, He walked over and tapped Leech on the shoulder to get his attention.

Leech looked up to see a complete stranger standing next to him, he blinked in suprising as the person pulled some meat straight off of the fire without even flinching. He then noticed the bandages and realised who it was.

"Gordan?"

Gordan who was in the middle of eating meat turned his head at hearing his name.

"Wut?"

He swallowed the meat and corrected his speech.

"Sorry about that, what was it you needed from me?"

Leech was in shock, he knew that a bit of paint worked well to hide what people looked like, but he couldn't see even a speck of the person who he had seen just an hour ago.

Gordan put another piece of meat into his mouth and ate it without blinking, still waiting for Leech to respond.

"When was the last time you ate?"

Surprisingly it was Leech's mother who had been watching the whole thing and had been equally shocked by his complete change in appearance. Gordan swallowed the meat which he had been chewing, and turned toward Leech's mother.

"Not including now, I would say about a week."

He said it like it wasn't all that much becouse a lot of people would be mostly fine with starving for a week. That wasn't the thing that bothered her, the thing that bothered her was that he had almost been dead and she a doctor had not noticed any signs off starvation.

"Is there a specific reason that you hadn't eaten in that long?"

Gordan stopped himself from pulling off another peice of meat and thought for a second about how best to answer the question. And then he arrived on the simplest solution.

"No food"

It was short and to the point, it also stopped him from having to go into detail about his former situation.

Leech's mom nodded her head and decided to drop the topic since he didn't seem to be willing to go into the specifics.

Gordan turned to Leech once again and held the core out to him. Leech looked at the core rather confused.

"What is it?"

Gordan turned the core over in his hands, and the core began to glow slightly green. Gordan gently set the core into the boys hands.

Leech was rather surprised at the weight of the sphere and he almost dropped it. It was warm and had an almost enchanting feeling about it that made him want to stare at it forever.

"Its a gift to congratulate you on your coming of age ceremony being a success."

Gordan patted him on the shoulder and kept in a smile. Leech looked from the core to Gordan and suddenly without warning he flung his arms around Gordan's waist hugging him tightly.

Gordan went silent for a few moments and then patted Leech on the shoulder.

Leech's mom looked at Gordan who looked rather empty of emotion. She also noticed that he looked to be in quite a bit of pain since he was biting his lip that he had already destroyed.

Once Leech let go Gordan let out the air he had been holding in. His stomach hadn't lost the needle feeling yet so the hug made it feel like the needles were being driven farther into his organs, not a pleasant feeling. And now Gordan wanted to sleep again, but he was also hungry so he wanted to eat.

"Glad you liked it, now let's eat some more food before it's all gone."

Leech was all smiles as he happily went back to eating. Gordan was about to eat when a loud voice broke out from the crowd.

"The two watchers are dead."

Gordan then remembered that he had left the body's on the other side of the wall, but it shouldn't have anything to do with him in his opinion, but with the way his week had gone who knew what they might try to pin on an injured stranger who they knew nothing about who mysteriously appeared at the same time that they were dealing with the potential destruction of their entire village or clan, no people hadn't caused him problems for less or anything. Suddenly Gordan had a very bad feeling about how this might go.
