Clara's fingers curled around the warm cup, but she had no intention of drinking the coffee in front of her. The smell alone churned her stomach.

She had spent the last two days trying to calm her daughter down, only to be met with a cold shoulder. Emily wouldn't eat, wouldn't talk, wouldn't even look at her. And now, just when she thought she couldn't feel any worse, he had called.

Josh had dared to reach out to her!

A man who had come crashing down everything she had built was seated across from her in a dimly lit café, yet she could not harm him.

"You actually came," he muttered, stirring his coffee with a spoon. His voice was laced with sarcasm. "Thought you'd just wire the money like usual and pretend I don't exist."

Clara narrowed her eyes. "If you had stuck to me pretending you don't exist, then I wouldn't be in this situation right now."
