The grand celebration had drawn to a close, and the guests were beginning to leave. Ella stood by a table, her heels aching after a night spent in them, but her gaze sought out Alexander.
He was speaking with a small group, as though sensing her eyes on him, Alexander turned his head and met her gaze. His lips curved slightly, a subtle smile that sent her heart into a flutter.
He excused himself from the group and strode toward her, each step deliberate and confident.
"Antonella," he said, his voice low and warm. "Are you heading home now?"
She nodded, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Yes, it's been a long night."
Alexander's gaze softened, and for a moment, the chaos of the evening seemed to fade. "It has. You handled yourself well tonight, by the way."
Ella tilted her head, a small laugh escaping her lips. "Did I? I feel like I spent half the night dodging questions about us."
