Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

Sophie Lawrence stood up and opened the window. The car lights gradually faded away and disappeared into the night.

The night wind blew coldly, and the chill seemed to penetrate Sophie Lawrence's body, blowing away the last bit of warmth on her. She just stood quietly in the pitch - black night like a statue. After a long time, she slowly turned around.

She went to the study and rummaged through a drawer to find a very vintage tape recorder. This was the first gift Henry Mitchell had given her when he was in primary school. The recorder was very old, and there was still a cassette tape inside. After Sophie Lawrence replaced the battery in the recorder, she gently pressed the play button. Cai Yilin's tired and sad song slowly came out of the recorder.

—The harm you've accumulated is really hard for me to get over.

Finally, I've come to see it clearly. The love won't come back...

A few days later, the Fire Brigade Corps and Healing Haven jointly carried out a volunteer activity named "Learn from Lei Feng, Send Health and Ensure Safety" approaching Kindergarten Paradise.

The leaders of the two sides were Sophie Lawrence and Henry Mitchell respectively. Since they were facing children, they adopted the method of playing games when explaining fire - fighting and first - aid knowledge. Sophie Lawrence quickly became good friends with the children.

A chubby - faced little boy snuggled up to Sophie Lawrence, pointed at Henry Mitchell not far away, and asked mysteriously, "Sister Sophie, do you like that doctor uncle?" Sophie Lawrence was immediately embarrassed and quickly glanced at Henry Mitchell. Not wanting to deceive the child, she lowered her voice and said, "Actually, we are husband and wife."

Confusion flickered in the little boy's eyes: "But you are nothing like my mom and dad."

Sophie Lawrence was slightly stunned: "We... might have some problems..."

The little boy sighed like an adult: "Yes, mom said that everything has an expiration date. Once it expires, it will break."

The child's words were straightforward and simple, but Sophie Lawrence seemed to be rooted to the spot. She thought bitterly that perhaps the "expiration date" for her and Henry Mitchell had really passed.

Henry Mitchell, who had been looking this way at some point, watched this scene with an indescribably complex look in his eyes. He stood for a while, then walked over to Sophie Lawrence and said, "The kindergarten principal is looking for you."

Sophie Lawrence looked down at the little boy: "Go and play with your friends."

After watching the little boy walk away, Sophie Lawrence stood up. As she passed by Henry Mitchell, she heard him suddenly say, "That child is four years old, right?"

Sophie Lawrence's steps suddenly stopped, and the color drained from her face instantly! She had also had a child, but an accident occurred during the disaster relief, and she lost him when he was less than three months old. If that child had been born smoothly, he would be exactly four years old this year...

In the afternoon, the activity ended. The people on both sides politely said goodbye and prepared to go their separate ways. Healing Haven and Fire Brigade Corps were in completely opposite directions. Sophie Lawrence looked at Henry Mitchell's still straight back and suddenly said to her teammate, "You go first."

She chased after Henry Mitchell and reached out to grab his big hand. Henry Mitchell turned around to look at her. Sophie Lawrence said in a hoarse voice, "Let's have a good talk about the child."

Henry Mitchell's face suddenly turned cold: "That matter is already in the past."

Sophie Lawrence stared straight into his eyes. How could it be seen from his eyes that this matter was already over?

Just as she was about to say something more, a stretch Lincoln drove over from a distance. In the blink of an eye, the car stopped beside the two of them. The rear window rolled down, and Chloe Morgan's beautiful face appeared. Her long hair fluttered in the wind as she called out softly, "Mingchuan."

Before Sophie Lawrence could react, Henry Mitchell suddenly pulled his hand back from hers! All she could hear was Henry Mitchell's cold and impatient voice ringing in her ears: "I have something to do. Go back by yourself."

Sophie Lawrence just stood there, watching helplessly as Henry Mitchell got into that car. She seemed to be nailed to the spot, her face ashen.

It had started to rain lightly at some point, and there were very few pedestrians on the road. Sophie Lawrence walked numbly on the road, not knowing where she was going.

"Ding - ling - ling—"

The cell phone suddenly rang, indicating a new text message. Sophie Lawrence picked up the phone and saw that it was from the same number that had sent the cursing text message last time. When she opened the text message, Sophie Lawrence froze instantly, her mind went blank, as if a bolt of lightning had struck her heart.
