Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

There was silence on the other end of the phone.

Sophie Lawrence's heart suddenly sank, and an indescribable sense of loss flooded over her like a tide. She understood what this silence meant.

Sophie Lawrence suppressed her about - to - burst emotions and said in a hoarse voice, "I know that in this marriage, I haven't been a good wife." She raised her head slightly, with a hint of loneliness in her eyes, as if recalling the past, "Since that incident five years ago, I've been locked in the guilt of losing my teammate. For such a long time, I've ignored a lot of people around me, including you..." At this point, Sophie Lawrence suddenly paused. Some images flashed through her mind, those expressions of Henry Mitchell that she had ignored, those moments she hadn't cared about. But soon, she continued, "I also understand why you don't love me anymore..."

Henry Mitchell, wearing a protective suit, was standing in the Starship Ward Corridor on the other end of the phone. When he heard Sophie Lawrence's words, his hands suddenly clenched, and his knuckles turned slightly white from the force. He interrupted Sophie Lawrence, "I'm very busy here. When I come back, we'll talk about this properly." Then, without hesitation, he hung up the phone directly.

Listening to the "beep - beep" sound in her ear, Sophie Lawrence's eyes suddenly turned red, and tears welled up in her eyes. She tried hard not to let them fall, but the feeling of being rejected and ignored still made her heart feel as if it had been hit hard.

...

On the day before the end of the month, Sophie Lawrence submitted the "Suspension Report Application" in her drawer. However, she still had to wait two days for the leader's reply. She stood on the playground, looking at her teammates who were constantly training, and had mixed feelings. Those familiar figures and those energetic training scenes made her feel extremely reluctant to leave. Here were her youth and her dreams, but now, she was about to leave.

"Beep - beep - beep!"

Suddenly, an urgent alarm bell rang in her ear. The teammates who were training immediately put down their things and rushed towards the fire garage like arrows leaving the bow. Sophie Lawrence also rushed over without hesitation. She thought to herself that this might be her last call - out this year, and she must stand her last post well.

The whole team quickly assembled and boarded the vehicle in an orderly manner. The fire engine rushed towards the rescue scene like a roaring beast.

A large fire suddenly broke out in a logistics warehouse, and thirteen people were trapped. When they arrived at the scene, they saw that the warehouse was already ablaze. The raging flames were like the tongues of demons, licking everything wantonly, and the thick smoke billowed into the sky, making the whole sky gray.

Sophie Lawrence immediately ordered the team members to quickly put out a firebreak, and then she led some people and rushed into the fire without hesitation.

The moment she rushed into the burning warehouse door, Sophie Lawrence hesitated for a moment. Subconsciously, she touched her stomach and thought of the child in her womb. This was her flesh and blood, her future. But the next moment, she gritted her teeth, with a determined look in her eyes, and rushed into the fire.

Inside the warehouse, there were iron shelves everywhere and express cartons piled high. The fire spread extremely fast, and the flames seemed to be alive, jumping crazily along the shelves and cartons.

Sophie Lawrence searched for people all the way and found a trapped girl under a fallen shelf. The girl was full of horror, and her eyes were full of tears. When Sophie Lawrence stepped forward to clear the things pressing on the girl, she suddenly heard the girl's crying voice.

"Leave me alone. I can't get out..."

Sophie Lawrence didn't say a word but just gritted her teeth and used all her strength to prop up the scalding - hot shelf pressing on the girl. The heat of the shelf passed through her gloves to her hands, as if it was going to burn her hands, but she didn't flinch at all. Finally, she pulled the girl out.

The girl's left leg was injured, and Sophie Lawrence helped the girl walk out all the way. At this time, a burning steel shelf on the girl's side suddenly tilted and fell towards them! Sophie Lawrence didn't think twice. Subconsciously, she pushed the girl away and used her own body to block the falling shelf. Her body was under great pressure, but her eyes were still firm. She wanted to protect this girl. It was her duty.

...

Three days later.

Henry Mitchell got on the plane home. On the plane, he took out the repaired tape recorder from his bag. His fingers gently stroked the tape recorder as if stroking a precious memory. He plugged in his earphones, rewound the tape, and then pressed the play button. The sad song of the female singer rang in his ears.

—Suddenly I remember your face, and the touch still feels like yesterday.

I'm finally a little more honest with myself...

Henry Mitchell's heart suddenly felt empty, and an inexplicable uneasiness welled up in his heart.

As soon as he got off the plane, he took a taxi directly home. Today should be Sophie Lawrence's day off, but the house was empty. Henry Mitchell frowned, and the uneasiness in his heart grew stronger. He took out his cell phone and called Sophie Lawrence, but no one answered on the other end.

A sense of uneasiness suddenly flashed through Henry Mitchell's mind. This uneasiness grew like wild grass in his heart. He didn't wait any longer and rushed downstairs directly towards the Fire Brigade Corps.

When Henry Mitchell arrived at the Fire Brigade Corps, it started to rain. The raindrops were like the tears of heaven, falling in profusion. As soon as he entered the camp area, Henry Mitchell saw a group of firefighters in blue formal uniforms standing in line on the playground with solemn expressions.

During the national anthem, Sophie Lawrence's former old captain carried a box covered with the national flag towards Mrs. Sang. Henry Mitchell's pupils suddenly shrank as if he had seen the most terrifying sight in the world. He was nailed to the spot, and his body seemed to be enchanted and unable to move.

Then, he saw the old captain hand the box to Mrs. Sang. Mrs. Sang's hair seemed to turn white in an instant. She took the box with trembling hands, and tears gushed out immediately. This was the second time in her life that she had received the same box. The box seemed to carry endless grief, making her body tremble slightly.

The old captain turned around with tears in his eyes and faced all the firefighters, shouting with a choked voice, "Fire Brigade Team One: 23 people dispatched, 1 sacrificed, no civilian casualties!"

"Please remember the name of the hero: Sophie Lawrence!"
