Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

"An old hen that doesn't lay eggs! If you can't give birth, just step aside!"

"Your face is thicker than the city wall. This is exactly what I'm talking about you!"

These words on the mobile phone screen, like sharp needles, stabbed deeply into Sophie Lawrence's eyes. Instantly, a wave of pain welled up in her eyes. It was not only the physical pain caused by the stimulation of the eyes, but more of the stabbing pain in her heart from these vicious words.

Suddenly, an idea flashed through her mind. Could it be her? Sophie Lawrence clenched her fists tightly. Her fingers turned slightly white due to the force. As if she had made up her mind, she dialed this number.

The number was actually connected! A highly arrogant female voice came from the receiver: "Huh, you still have the nerve to call?" The voice was full of disdain and provocation, like a cold wind, blowing straight into Sophie Lawrence's ears.

Sophie Lawrence's eyebrows and eyes turned cold, as if a layer of frost had formed in her eyes instantly. She said coldly, "So it is you."

Chloe Morgan's tone was full of sarcasm: "So what if it's me! Henry Mitchell is too kind to take the initiative to divorce you. I have no choice but to scold you, this shameless bitch without self - awareness!"

"I warn you, you'd better leave Henry Mitchell on your own. Otherwise, I'll let everyone know that you can't have children." Chloe Morgan's voice was full of malice, and every word was like a poisoned arrow shooting towards Sophie Lawrence.

A flame of anger rose in Sophie Lawrence's heart. The anger burned fiercely in her chest. She suppressed the anger in her voice: "Just go ahead and say it."

"But I also want to tell you that a woman doesn't live just to have children." Sophie Lawrence took a deep breath, trying to make her voice sound more determined. "And for your behavior of disclosing others' privacy, I can directly sue you in court."

Chloe Morgan sneered, and the laughter was full of contempt: "You think I'm afraid of you! Just sue me!"

With a "snap", Chloe Morgan hung up the phone. Sophie Lawrence clenched her fist suddenly, and her nails almost dug into her palm. Her hand trembled slightly, and her heart was full of anger and grievance.

Four years ago, after she lost her child, she was diagnosed that it would be very difficult for her to get pregnant again. Only she and Henry Mitchell knew about this. He had once said that he would not tell anyone. But now, Chloe Morgan knew about this matter and used it to humiliate her so much. Sophie Lawrence's heart seemed to be tangled by a mess of threads, and her thoughts became chaotic.

...

Back at home, Sophie Lawrence dug out the box that she had sealed with her own hands four years ago. Her movements were a bit sluggish, as if each movement carried heavy memories. In the box were the baby's B - ultrasound photo, the little shoes knitted by Grandma Sang, and the things Henry Mitchell had prepared for the baby.

Sophie Lawrence stared blankly at the things in the box. Those items were like keys, opening the door to the most painful and also the most beautiful memories deep in her memory. She slowly reached out and took out the B - ultrasound photo, gently pressed it against her face, and murmured, "I'm sorry..." Her voice was very soft, like a feather falling, but it was full of endless guilt and longing. It was her first time to be a mother, but she didn't protect her child well.

The day before losing this child, she and Henry Mitchell even felt the baby's first fetal movement. What a wonderful and happy feeling it was, like a little life gently knocking on their heart doors, telling them of its existence. At that time, Henry Mitchell was so excited that he couldn't sleep all night. His face was filled with the joy and expectation of becoming a father soon.

Suddenly, the sound of the door closing came from the doorway. This sound pulled Sophie Lawrence back from her memories. She seemed to suddenly wake up from a dream, and hurriedly wiped away the cold tears on her face. Those tears still carried the sadness and pain deep in her heart. Just as she put the things back into the box, Henry Mitchell quickly walked into the bedroom.

Seeing the box in front of Sophie Lawrence, Henry Mitchell's gaze paused for a moment. At that instant, a complex emotion seemed to flash in his eyes, including memories, guilt, and something indescribable, but then he immediately looked away.

Then he took out the suitcase from the cabinet and began to pack his clothes. His movements were very neat, as if he wanted to finish this task as soon as possible.

Sophie Lawrence was stunned: "Are you going on a business trip?"

Henry Mitchell's movements paused slightly. He just paused for a short while and then continued what he was doing. He said lightly, "I'm going to the neighboring provincial capital for a consultation. It will probably take about a month."

Sophie Lawrence looked at his figure with his back always turned to her. That figure looked a bit cold. She took a deep breath: "Did you tell others about my inability to get pregnant?"

Henry Mitchell frowned. He glanced at his watch. The hands of the watch seemed to be urging him to leave quickly. He said impatiently, "Let's talk about this when I come back."

Sophie Lawrence stood up and walked in front of him. There was a trace of stubbornness in her eyes: "What if I want to hear your explanation right now?"

Henry Mitchell zipped up his suitcase. He didn't want to waste any more time on this matter. He walked around Sophie Lawrence and was about to leave.

After taking two steps, the suitcase was pulled. He turned back impatiently: "I don't have time to talk about such boring things with you right now! Let go!" There was obvious annoyance in his voice, and his eyes were full of impatience.

Sophie Lawrence pursed her lips tightly. Her lips trembled slightly, and her eyes turned red, full of grievance and disappointment, but she still held on tightly and refused to let go.

Henry Mitchell's eyes darkened. His eyes became even gloomier, and he yanked Sophie Lawrence's hand away!

The suitcase suddenly slid and hit the cabinet.

"Smack!"

The tape recorder on the table fell to the ground hard.

—End... No... Zi

I don't know if the play button was accidentally pressed. The tape recorder lying on the ground suddenly started playing music automatically. The sound was intermittent, like an injured person struggling to say something.

After making two "zi" sounds, the tape recorder stopped playing music and broke down.

Henry Mitchell was stunned for a moment. He bent down and picked up the tape recorder.

Sophie Lawrence stared at the tape recorder in Henry Mitchell's hand. Something in her heart seemed to break suddenly as well. It was an indescribable feeling, like the softest part of her heart was hit hard by someone and then shattered into countless pieces.

At this moment, she suddenly felt that the Henry Mitchell in front of her was so strange.

Was this impatient - looking man still the Henry Mitchell who used to say to her, "You don't need to worry about anything. I'll take care of everything."?

Where was the Henry Mitchell who used to bring a bowl of hot wontons across the entire university town to find her in the cold winter?

Sophie Lawrence took a step back. She suddenly understood what it meant to be completely disheartened. It was like a basin of cold water, ruthlessly extinguishing the last glimmer of hope in her heart.

Seeing her like this, Henry Mitchell froze for a moment. His lips moved as if he wanted to say something, but Sophie Lawrence spoke before him.

She said the words that she had been thinking about for a long time but was always reluctant to say.

"Henry Mitchell, let's break up."
