"What is wrong with me?" Kervin muttered to himself as his feet changed direction and went to an orphanage home instead.
Initially, he was meant to go collect a soul which was ripe for Hell but here he was, going to the orphanage all because he didn't sight the lady he always saw at the window.
Everyday when he passes by to go on his daily task of collecting souls and sending them to hell, he would subconsciously stop right across the orphanage home, watching a young lady cheerfully attend to children of different ages through a large glass window.
But today, she wasn't there, it was a different lady and it bothered him. Seeing her everyday was like adding fuel to a car to make it work more.
"Could it be that she died and went to heaven?" He pondered to himself as he stopped at the door of the orphanage home and prepared to ring the bell.
At the thought of her dying, he frowned in discomfort.
Not long after he rang the bell, the lady he saw answered and welcomed him warmly and so did the children.
They were a nuisance but he had to act just to buy time until he got what he wanted.
"I'm Rachel and w…."
"I'm looking for a lady," he interrupted her and she frowned in confusion.
"A lady?"
"Yes, she has freckles on her cheeks with chocolate brown wavy hair." He described her and the lady gave an 'O' sign with her lips in realization.
"You're talking about Hazel. Lily, go call Hazel for this gentleman." At the woman's instruction, three little triplets ran inside in excitement and Kervin's heart began to race at the thought of seeing her up close.
"Hazel," he repeated her name and loved how it sounded.
It was a relief she wasn't dead yet.
"Mister, are you here to adopt one of us?" A little boy with a pair of round spectacles like he inquired.
"Would you like to live with a stranger like me?" he asked and the boy became quiet while the others were shouting 'pick me' without having an inkling of who he really was.
"That's him!"
At that loud exclamation, he looked in the direction which it came from and found the young lady he was looking for, looking directly at him in surprise.
His eyes swiftly zeroed on her lips when he heard her say, "Oh my goodness!" for her ears alone.
What did she mean by that? He wondered.
Was it because he was good looking?
She didn't know who he was right?
But the way she looked at him said a lot.
With care, she approached them after fixing her surprised expression. Was she expecting him? Kervin wondered.
"Oh, here is Hazel, one of the aunties. She will discuss with you while I go take care of those crying children," saying that the lady named Rachel left them.
The children who were around him couldn't stop jumping in excitement because they believed one of them would be adopted.
"Are you here to adopt a child Mr…" she trailed and he dutifully completed it.
"Kervin."
For a moment, he caught a flicker of great surprise in her eyes.
"I'm here to have a word with you," he said instead in all seriousness and she blinked in curiosity.
"Why don't you all go play while I speak with this gentleman, okay?" She instructed and they reluctantly left him alone to play with each other.
"Please, this way," she led him to a corner where there were comfy chairs and a table with flowers on it.
Before she could offer him a seat, he had already plop himself onto one of them.
Sitting down opposite him, she smiled and inquired about what he wanted to say to her.
Leaning forward, Kervin took in as much as he could of her face so he wouldn't have to pass by and be tempted to see her like today.
From the looks of it, he could tell that she had been sleeping due to her dull eyes and slightly disheveled hair.
But despite that, he found her enthralling.
WHAT WAS HE THINKING!
He quickly blinked when he realized what was happening.
She was affecting him in ways he couldn't express and the next thing he said was entirely different from what he initially planned on saying.
"Did you not sleep well last night?"
At his question, Hazel frowned.
"Why?" She inquired in confusion.
"You're always up early and it's a sight to behold everytime I pass this road." He said to her bewilderment.
Parting her lips, she wanted to speak but he beat her to it.
"I came just to check on you because I didn't see you as always."
With that, he got up and was about to make his way out of the building.
"Mr Kervin!" She hurriedly called him.
At this point Kervin made a terrible mistake by coming to see her because he was battling within himself to leave.
Turning around, he faced her. She had a puzzled look on her face as she said, "Thank you for checking up on me."
But instead of giving a response to that, he hurried out of there before he would say something absurd.
However, when Kervin walked out the door and looked ahead of him, lo and behold, there was another man looking directly at the window where Hazel was standing.
And as if to make matters worse, this man he saw wasn't an ordinary human but a spirit in a mortal body like him.
The man walked across the road to Kervin's dismay and before he could get to the door, Hazel had already opened it with a bright smile on her face.
"Psalm!" She cheerfully called out to him and it did something strange to Kervin's heart.
As they were about to walk past each other, the man who was none other than Psalm, whispered a question to him.
"What is a demon doing here?"
"And what's an angel doing here?" Kervin retorted but none of them bothered to give a reply.
