Chapter 1 - Lawbreaker

Chimera are not humans. They are experiments developed by humanity who contain powers to help in facing against hostile lifeforms during warfare. Currently, they are being utilised in Humanity's conquest of the planet Valdeia, a strange planet full of flora and large bioforms as well as strange lifeforms who pose great threats to humanity, namely the Yatzul, a strange parasite which has a hold over Valdeia's ecosystem. It's deadly evolution and adaptation prove to be a threat to humanity and their conquest, therefore the Chimera are the only hope humanity has...

Year- 2234AD

Planet- Valdeia

Grid number- 34

The old freighter pulled itself into the docking station. It's rear engines roared as it settled on the locks before they clamped on the ship's stands. The engines settled down before the exit side doors opened and two men walked out, one in a dark red coat and black gloves hidden by his pockets. The other was in a dark grey military uniform with a few badges along the chest. They both looked in front of them as another military officer approached. He was a rather old man, roughly 55 and had a short, grey beard and had slicked back grey hair. He bowed as the two stopped before him.

'Lieutenant Hanaka, good timing.' The young lieutenant had semi-short brown hair and young features. He nodded calmly. 'And you, Lieutenant Wachisaka.' Hanaka bowed in return as he spoke. Wachisaka looked past the lieutenant and noticed the attire of the man behind him. He took notice of the slightly long pitch black hair that fell with messy ends; that, and the tattoo slightly hidden on the young man's neck, reading the number 287. The old man's breath was caught suddenly as he focused back on the situation. 'I see that this is the new Chimera brought for the area.' Hanaka nodded and turned back to present the silent Chimera. 'This is Chimera CL7-287, also known as Jyn Kanesaki.' Wachisaka looked at the Chimera, examining it more before it looked up into his eyes. 'You're my new lieutenant?' The sudden voice shook the lieutenant but he recomposed himself. 'Yes, lieutenant Wachisaka, you'll be reporting under me from now on until further notice.' Kanesaki nodded silently, his dark brown eyes looking heavily dilated, a trait of the Chimera is that their eyes are naturally dilated to allow more light to enter their eyes, even when outside. Kanesaki looked across the old lieutenant and towards a sign reading Outpost 34: Mushen. He opened his mouth as he focused back on the man.

'This is your outpost?'

'Yes, this is my outpost. For now, at least; the captain is out on an investigation for a few weeks so I'm acting captain.' Hanaka looked back at Kanesaki and handed him a badge. 'This is your badge to confirm that you're a Chimera. Just show it whenever you're on a mission or on duty.' Kanesaki reached out and took the badge before fitting it into his pocket. 'Thank you, lieutenant. Will you be staying with this outpost at all?' Hanaka noted the look of slight sorrow. He wondered what exactly he was seeing from the usually emotionless Chimera until finally he realised what it was.

Abandonment.

He had been with Kanesaki with a few months, roughly a year whilst he overlooked his development in a lab yet he never thought the Chimera would grow attached to him. Like a pet to an owner, Kanesaki didn't want to be left by Hanaka. 'Something bothering you lieutenant?' Hanaka focused back on the lieutenant. 'No, lieutenant Wachisaka. Just a thought.' Kanesaki stepped forward, past Hanaka as he bowed before the old lieutenant. 'Kanesaki Jyn, I am at your service as your Chimera!' With that, he stood upright and turned to bow before Hanaka. Hanaka bowed back before getting back into the freighter. He thought to himself about Kanesaki not wanting him to leave. A Chimera developing emotions wasn't rare, but he had never seen it happen.

'Kanesaki, was it? We have a report of Yazul activity nearby in a farming village. We need you to check it out.' Kanesaki nodded and walked with the lieutenant to a transport ship. He boarded it and looked around the rusty interior. It was a tight room with minimal space to do anything and the cockpit could only fit one pilot rather than the standard two-pilot ships of the time. The pilot got into his seat and turned to see Kanesaki sitting quietly with his hands by his lap. 'First mission on Valdeia, eh?' The voice was muffled by the old helmet and the sounds of the engines readying. Kanesaki simply nodded as the pilot looked back in his mirror. Wachisaka stood outside the vehicle and gave the signal to lift off as the ship suddenly burst forth, causing dust to erupt from the floor.

The ship cut through the air with great force as it zoomed across the area. Kanesaki looked out from the cockpit window and saw the planet's large caverns and empty, rocky surface. A large moon was rising on the horizon as megastructures loomed in the atmosphere; Humanity's presence was apparent no matter where you were on Valdeia. The ship was blasting through the clear skies as a strange orange-red light shone through the cockpit and along the horizon. After an hour's drive, the shop finally landed at the farming village. Multiple people ran over to welcome their helpers as Kanesaki walked out from the ship. They looked startled upon seeing a Chimera leave the ship but resumed their appraisals once he looked over at them. 'Chimera CL7-287, I'm here to help with a Yatzul.' He spoke with a straight face and calm demeanor as he showed his badge to the farmers. One nodded and ran back to the village, signalling to Kanesaki that he should follow; he oblidged silently.

Looking around, it was a quiet area, mainly just rocky terrain and crops with a large river flowing through them. 'We saw it last night... Eating our cattle.' The young farmer spoke to Kanesaki as they walked before he stopped at a large sheet covering something, something large. 'That was bad enough, then we found the rest.' He pulled over the sheet and revealed a pile of corpses. Roughly eleven people; it was hard to tell given the bodies all being mangled up and torn into, bite marks everywhere and dry blood looking like paint splatter. Kanesaki observed and analysed the corpses closely. 'What did it look like?' A second farmer walked forward, she had a look of fear in her eyes, Kanesaki didn't know if it was because of him or the corpses; he assumed the former as Chimera's were usually feared more by humans than the Yatzul.

The entire hysteria around Chimera was driven from the fifth generation of Chimera; a bloodthirsty group who were taken out of production due to their apparent lack of empathy or care for life, even their own. Kanesaki was from the seventh generation, who were more adapted than that of the bloodthirsty fifth. The seventh were the newest generation, only created roughly 20 years ago. That may sound like a long time ago, but since the fourth generation, Chimera were made from embryos and raised to be obedient and battle-trained. Kanesaki was born in the third year of the seventh generation, making him just about 17 presently. The youngest for a Chimera was about 15, meaning he was on the younger side of Chimera's deployed. He had been trained under lieutenant Hanaka since before he was even a lieutenant and had learnt his combat skills from him, therefore Kanesaki had grown an attachment to Hanaka.

The young girl looked at the corpses then back at Kanesaki, a tear in her eye. 'It was tall... About half a buildings height. It had these long arms... It used them to grab everyone then... Then it ate them, whilst the others were impaled on it's fingers.' A tear fell from each of the girl's eyes. Kanesaki watched her without emotion. 'You saw it kill them?' She fell to her knees, her eyes now flowing waterfalls down her face to the dirt as she spoke. 'Yes... I saw it kill them, eat them and rip them apart! I had to watch my father be eaten by it! Please, kill it... Kill it quickly!' Two villagers walked over to walk to the girl away and comfort her as the people followed. The first farmer walked over to Kanesaki. The Chimera's eyes pierced through his own, seemingly staring into his soul. He swallowed slowly and looked to the corpses. 'Can you really kill it? I've heard of the Chimera, always saving us from Yatzul... But I've never seen one really do so.' Looking at the mangled bodies, Kanesaki opened his mouth. 'I assure you, I can handle it. The seventh were developed to be the perfect generation. We're the most adaptable generation, unlike the bloodthirsty nature of the fifth or the kind-heartedness of the sixth.' Smiling slightly, the farmer turned and begun to walk off. 'Your generation are also the most hollow, y'know. You sevens lack emotion, more than normal.' As he called out behind him, Kanesaki simply stared at the corpses, thinking of the Yatzul that did this to those people and how he wanted to locate and eliminate it.

Night had come and Kanesaki hadn't found the creature yet. The villagers grew cautious as night fell over them. The Chimera walked back to the village, his search turning up no results. A faint growl could be heard not too far off from him. He looked around for a moment before continuing walking. Suddenly, a massive shadow emerged over Kanesaki. He noticed it and quickly evaded as a large claw slashed at the ground. Recovering hastily, Kanesaki looked up and saw the creature, tall and long, sword-like fingers. This was the Yatzul. He took a deep breath in and out as the creature screamed out a deafening roar. The farmers back in the village could hear the creature as a few ran to see it. Meanwhile, Kanesaki watched the creature closely. It was tall, long legs, slim body and a large jaw, the teeth seemingly part of it's skin. It's body wash a dark black with bright and dark red shining along it. Taking a step back, Kanesaki moved a hand from his side towards his throat where suddenly, a dark, leathery hilt emerged from him, phasing through his body like it was nothing.

His hand grabbed the hilt and he pulled out a large curved blade from his neck before holding it before him in a battle stance. The Yatzul roared again before dashing towards the Chimera who, with quick precision, dashed forwards and cut through the creature's left hand, causing blood to erupt from the creature's arm as the hand fell to the floor. It turned and faced Kanesaki whilst it's hand slowly reappeared, now attached again. Kanesaki took note of this. 'Healing? Fine, guess I need to kill you quick.' He spoke calmly before dashing back and forth as the creature swung rapidly, screaming in anger and pain as it lightly scratched Kanesaki as he returned the damage tenfold along it's body, wounds healing just as quickly as new ones emerged. Blood covered the dirt and rocky floor as the Yatzul limped across the ground. Kanesaki had stopped his attacks and examined the creature for a moment. He readied himself to strike the killing blow until he was caught off guard.

'You bastard demon! You die here tonight!' The girl from the village ran over towards the two. Kanesaki watched the Yatzul take note of the girl and turn to impale her on its hand. A sudden spark ran through his brain, he didn't even think, acting only on instinct as he blacked out for a split-second and the next, he was impaled by the finger of the Yatzul. Looking down, he could see the finger stained with his blood as he coughed and bled immensely, his body struggling to stand upright. He heard the sound of a girl crying as he looked ahead of him. The young girl stared at him as the creature pulled it's finger from him slowly, blood spilling from his mouth as it did. He thought to himself for a second. Did I... Act without thinking? Did I act on instinct? Why..? Did I think she was going to die? Was I... worried... did I feel..? He felt the absence of a midsection and looked up to the sky, his breath visible from the cold as the stars shone down. The large, man-made rings slowly moved over the skies as the moon moved above the horizon, now fully visible to him. He took in the sights before focusing back on the situation. The Yatzul readied it's hand to cut through him completely as his final thoughts went through his head.

'Chimera Law. The rules that all Chimera follow and are coded to obey. The rules are integrated to avoid the same incidents created by the second generation. They must be followed by all Chimera, with zero acceptions. However, with the birth of the seventh generation, these conditions have been altered. Seventh generation Chimera, if given the right conditions, can learn to feel human emotion and desires. In doing so, they near the perfection that their progenitor searches for. A Chimera who undergoes this change must be monitored at all times as they may learn to rebel and conspire against humanity. If they do, they are to be eliminated immediately, without hesitation.' These were the words said to humans who had become officers and all Chimera who were birthed during the seventh generation. The memory of these words were erased from all Chimera but could resurface when the conditions were met. One such condition was a scenario where a Chimera's desire to save someone or help another becomes too strong. Kanesaki met this condition, and had awakened his mind to emotion, desire and autonomy.

He stood up, the hole in his stomach still bleeding profusely as the Yatzul swung. He turned back and parried the attack before leaping up and cutting through the creature's neck. The blood spilled out aggressively as he went again, cutting the nape. He repeated again and again and again until the Yatzul eventually collapsed. It roared again as Kanesaki faced it, he bent his front knee and moved the blade to his hip before vanishing, appearing past the creature having already swung his blade. The Yatzul couldn't even roar again as it's upper half fell, blood flowing massively from both sides of it's body. Kanesaki looked past his shoulder, the body moved slightly before stopping completely. 'Yatzul eliminated.'

The girl looked on, Kanesaki's blood staining her cheek and shirt as tears of both sorrow and happiness fell. 'Thank you, Chimera.' A few more villagers ran over to see Kanesaki standing over the corpse. They believed they would see a hero, like a knight in shining armour or a pure saviour. Instead, they were greeted by a blood-covered, half-dead creature that resembled a human. It looked over at them, it's eyes looking predatory, sery on killing its target. The villagers stepped back in fear as one picked up the girl. Kanesaki took a few steps towards them, clenching his blade's hilt as blood dripped from it's edges. He stared blankly at them, blood covering his cheek and pouring over his eye. 'You're all safe now. Don't worry.' He realised they were looking at him with fear. For the first time, he felt a sense of disappointment in himself. Quickly, he but the blade back into his body, the weapon once again phasing into him. 'I... I'm not going to hurt you.' As he said those words, he felt his head ache. The villagers all watched as he reassured them of their safety before he fell to the ground. There was a storm in his head. All he could feel was pain from his head as he yelled out in pain. The villagers quickly ran to help him as he eventually fell silent, seemingly passing out.

Next morning

07:18AM

Kanesaki watched as a ship flew down outside the village. Lieutenant Wachisaka walked out with two officers in uniform tailing him. A group of villagers walked over and greeted the lieutenant before signalling to bring out Kanesaki. He joined the lieutenant quickly and looked him in the eyes. 'I killed the Yatzul. The village is safe now, lieutenant.' With that, the Chimera walked onto the ship as the officers and Wachisaka were left with the villagers. The girl ran over to try and get past the trio as one of the officers jumped out to grab her. 'Hey, stop!' The girl struggled to break free as she reached a hand out to the ship. 'I wanna see him! I need to say thanks, please!' As she yelled, the second villager looked to Wachisaka, he scratched his head. 'That Chimera saved us all, we owe him our thanks. Tell him we all said thanks to him.' Wachisaka nodded. 'It will be done.' The three all entered the ship as it took off; the girl stood as the dust erupted from the ground and created a cloud of dust over her. The other villager walked beside her. 'Wonder if we'll see him again.' The girl looked up into the clear sky as the ship flew off, a tear running down her face. 'I hope so...' Wachisaka sat beside Kanesaki on the ship, taking note of the apparent scars from wounds healed. 'They wanted me to let you know that-'

'I know.' The lieutenant was cut off and took note. He quickly nodded and refrained from continuing, allowing the Chimera to sit in silence as he looked out of the window to see the village one last time.

Chimera are not monsters, yet they are not classed as human. Chimera are weapons, used and broken like any other weapon; and much like weapons, they evolve over time. However, these weapons evolve quickly, and without warning. No one is aware of these evolutions until they've fully manifested, until it's too late. These kinds of Chimera are typically thrown away or eliminated. After all, what good is a weapon that knows it's just a tool.
