Chapter 2 - Outpost 34: Mushen

Kanesaki stepped out from the ship as Wachisaka and the two officers left too. 'I didn't properly show you around, did I?' Silently, Kanesaki shook his head. His head still hurt from the previous night, he thought about saving the girl and why he did so before focusing back on the old lieutenant. 'I guess I should know where everything is in this outpost.' The two officers glanced at Kanesaki as he spoke. 'Don't think I've ever heard a Chimera say they "guess".' The officer chuckled to himself as the other looked over to Wachisaka.

'I suppose there's a first time for everything, officer.' Wachisaka smiled slightly, his eyes watching Kanesaki closely, examining the Chimera's eyes, the emptiness in them had faded. 'Well, I believe we should show you around, 287. Or, do you prefer Kanesaki?' The Chimera glanced up suddenly, he looked slightly pale. 'Kanesaki, please.' The group all walked around the outpost as Wachisaka showed the designated areas to the new Chimera; the training grounds, lab, medical centre, armoury, sleeping quarters, watchtower.and the main operations facility.

Shortly after, Wachisaka went to the operations facility to continue overviewing the outpost. He had left one of his officers to handle Kanesaki. His name was officer Tatsuka Nishihara. He was a first class officer, one rank away from lieutenant; he was the third in command over the whole outpost and was assigned as the overseer of the research and training departments, he was in charge of training Kanesaki and keeping him fresh for combat. His dark purple hair was tied up into a sharp ponytail, his hair sticking out to somewhat resemble a pineapple. His eyes were a dark hazel and his uniform was a clean dark grey with an officer's first class badge attached to the breast pocket. He glanced past his shoulder, watching Kanesaki closely as he brought him to the training grounds.

'You're a Chimera, so you've had basic combat training, yes?' They entered the grounds and Kanesaki nodded. 'Nothing too advanced, though. Lieutenant Hanaka always told me that I would learn and adapt whilst in the field.'

He thought of the lieutenant. They were like brothers growing up. Hanaka was about seven years older then him, he took Kanesaki under his wing when he was only eighteen, his first job as an officer was training Chimera. It was a special offer given to those who excelled in their training in the academy. Hanaka had taught Kanesaki everything he knew about the world; before he turned ten, all he knew was to be obedient to humans and that he would be a weapon in war to help humanity. Now, however, he was questioning his place in the world. Was he just a weapon? Or was he something more, like his own being? The questions ran through his head last night when he had saved the girl. He felt like his brain was being torn apart by electric shock or by needles, like he was dying a painful death. Had he awakened? Had he gained a new sense of life? The answer, truly, was simple. His mind had been set free from the basic obedience of a Chimera. He had the freedom of speaking outside of basic replies or gestures, for example, he could 'guess' instead of be positive or not.

'Oi, Chimera! You listening?' Kanesaki quickly focused back on Nishihara who was standing before him with a set of weapons on a table. Calmly, Kanesaki replied. 'No, officer. Sorry, please repeat what you were saying.' He stood calmly, he would usually bow after making such an error, yet he would never make this error of zoning out, focused on his own thoughts. Nishihara smiled a little at the reply as he removed his outer uniform to reveal a shirt underneath. It looked somewhat like a dark grey compression shirt with long sleeves.

'You're acting strange, Chimera. Why is that? Got a screw loose in that lab brain of yours?' He looked back to the weapons; a selection of knives, blades, standard pistols and axes. Kanesaki observed as he looked over the weapons like he was choosing one. As he moved a hand across the table, he began to speak. 'I'm not fond of Chimera, y'know. Whilst I appreciate the help you lab brains give us, I find it annoying having to deal with you when you turn rogue. It's worse when I end up losing my comrades to you guys. I'm not saying you're gonna turn out like that, but if you do, I won't hesitate to kill you, Chimera.' He hesitated for a moment before continuing. 'Anyways, how would you like a workout?'

'Do you plan on a sparring match?' Grabbing a small knife, Nishihara turned and flipped the knife in his hand before gripping it upside down. 'I thought that since you took down that Yatzul, you might wanna fight a more intelligent opponent.' He stared Kanesaki in the eyes, the Chimera noticed that the eyes staring into his had a similar sense of emptiness to them, much like a Chimera. 'I know you're probably thinking, "how can he fight me, he's just a human, I'd easily beat him!". Let me assure you, I've fought a few Chimera in the past, all rogue lab brains.' He paced around Kanesaki as he glanced past his shoulder to watch the officer's every movement. 'And this little suit I've got on is a standard issue YNS.'

'YNS?' Kanesaki questioned the officer as he replied hastily. 'Yatzul Nano-Suit. It uses a weakened form of Yatzul to coat a suit that can be manipulated by a neurolink with the user. They can only really help with boosting offensive and defensive capabilities but they also come in handy for regenerating wounds. Most suits take under twelve hours to fully heal most wounds, fatal ones are a hit and miss, though. It's humanity's way of trying to become our own Chimera. In fact, these suits were developed by the same creator of the Chimera; I guess we oughtta thank him for two things.' He laughed a little to himself before facing Kanesaki, stopping his pacing. 'They're mainly utilised for dealing with rogue Chimera. So just don't get any ideas, okay.' The two stopped opposite each other before Kanesaki looked down at his body, his mind thought back to his injury from the Yatzul; how it pierced right through him without struggle.

He focused back on the situation before him, taking a breath as Nishihara assumed a fighting stance. 'Ready to spar, Chimera?' With a look of readiness in his eye, Kanesaki replied as his weapon hilt appeared from his collarbone. 'I have a name, y'know.' Nishihara smirked at the sudden response. 'Oh yeah? What's that, 287?' Looking down to the floor, Kanesaki thought to himself before looking back up, taking a step forwards. 'Jyn Kanesaki. And I plan on staying here for a while.' The two stood off as they prepared to spar.
