Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Chance of survival

Cal POV:

I flew across the sky. I had to help them, I couldn't stand idly by as my people were slaughtered by those terrible shadows, I couldn't allow that to happen.

Even if my magic still hadn't yet matured to its full power that it likely would sometime in the next few years. I sent down bolts of the blue electric magic down from above, stunning the shadows enough for some victims to get away.

But many weren't so fortunate. The roads were covered red, mutilated bodies littering the streets.

I had to stop this, I had to find someway to stop them. My magic wasn't enough, it would never be enough to stop them from tearing this city apart.

I flung myself at a shadow in the process of forcing a family out of their home. I tackled it to the ground, trying to fight it.

My body was so drained of energy, I could barely continue like this, I could feel my magic fizzling out, the bolts of bright blue light becoming dimmer and weaker, imposing less of a threat at the shadows.

The shadow turned on me, pinning my arms to the ground, it grinned cruelty at me, showing rows of sharp jaws ready to rip me apart.

Hyrus POV:

Cal was gone, he might not ever come back. But I hadn't the time to worry for him as hard as it may be. I spotted a shadow prowling this way from 2 houses down, its bright red eyes scanning the streets, looking for someone to kill.

I ran into the nearest house, the door opened wide. I nearly ran back out as I saw the inside of the house. Blood splatters coated the walls, and a shredded and lifeless body lay in the middle of the room I had entered, unmoving and seemingly killed recently.

I sprinted up the steps, I heard the awful static sound nearing the house. I ran into a random room, slamming the door shut.

I had entered into a study of office of some sort, a bookshelf on the side of the wall and a desk with papers littered around it in the corner.

I crouched under the desk. The static was louder now, the shadow inside the house, I heard the floorboards creak as it traipsed across the rooms and halls of the home.

I hear it climb up the steps, the loud pads of its feet storming up the steps.

"I know someone is up here." It mused, chuckling darkly. "Don't worry, I'll make it quick and painless if you come out now, you don't have to suffer the same fate as everyone else has."

I was shaking now, my heart beating wildly as I hear the shadows of its feet right outside the door to the study I was hidden inside.

The door creaked open, exposing pure black feet with razor-sharp claws in the place of nails. It wandered through the room so slowly, torturing me with anticipation as it looked behind the curtains, behind the bookshelf, I knew it was only a few seconds before its inevitable discovery of where I was hidden.

I saw it slowly walk, right in front of the desk. I was frozen, not allowing myself to breathe, making almost no movements.

"I see you." It said as the shadow bent its head down, looking right at me with a deranged grin
