Cal POV:
I watched as all of the shadows disintegrated into dust, getting blown away by the wind into the distance. My hands still pulsing with magic, though slowly disappearing, the eclipse barely still in progress, the moon only covering a sliver of the sun.
I felt my unnaturally large wings begin to tremble, beginning to retract as I felt myself fall back to the ground.
I took a moment to survey the town, my eyes darting though its remains. Though many had been slaughtered, blood covering almost every surface, the buildings were in as good condition as they could be, some missing chunks of wood but most still intact, it would take at least a week to rebuild.
My thoughts returned to the human, I had to go back for him. Though my legs felt raw and were throbbing in pain, I ran back as hard as I could to where I had left him, he had to be alive. I couldn't bear the thought that he might have been killed like so many had on this unfortunate day.
My feet carried me to the street on the edge of town where I'd left him, behind that one home.
Fuck! He wasn't there. My eyes darted erratically around the street, from house to house, he had to still be here.
From the corner of my eye, I finally saw him, coming out from behind the house I was searching for him from.
Hyrus POV:
I ran towards Cal, he threw his arms around me, tightly grabbing on to me, his claws digging into my back. We stayed there for a few minutes, both comfortable in each others arms, no one was around this part of the city.
"I'll never let you go into danger like this again." Cal murmured against my shoulder. "I promise, I won't let anything happen to you again."
We stayed there in comfortable silence, Cal holding me tight against his chest.
"I'll take you back to the castle my dear, but there is much work to do." He sighed heavily. "So many lives were lost today."
My smile dropped from my face, remembering the mutilated body I had found in that house.
He took me in his arms, I could feel the invisibility spell be cast over me as he grunted, his wings ripping out of his back, as he weakly leapt off the ground, flying me back home.
