It was lunch time. As others rushed to the restaurant on the ground floor, Asia buried herself in work. There was work to be finished by the marketing department but she was the only one bothered.
She didn't want it to be said that she was lax due to her relationship with the Managing Director, her sister's betrothed. So she worked and enjoyed it, worked to shut up her colleagues. Then she would have a lovely evening.
"Hi sister, I came to check on David and thought, why not bring my sweet little sister lunch," Violet was there.
"Chicken wings?" Asia asked, looking at the sister brightly.
"You know me," Violet smiled, passed Asia the package.
"Thank you sister. What are you doing with the rest of your day?" Asia asked, opened the package.
"I am going to check on David. He has a business trip to Paris and I want to extend it with a romantic holiday," Violet said, fanned herself.
"You should have the child of the promise already, I am dying to be an aunt," Asia said, nudged the sister.
"That's exactly what I am working on. You will have a cute one. David is really handsome and," Violet pointed at herself head to foot, "this is me," she beamed as Asia laughed.
"Go see him. I will see you at home," Asia said, focused on the meal.
Violet made heads turn as she left. To be honest, that was the main reason she visited her younger sister. To ensure people saw her. To ensure they saw she was a class above them. And that she was.
Violet was tall, stood at five foot nine, slender with delicate skin. She had the latest skincare products and a stylist on speed dial. Her big brown eyes were seductive, going well with the curly black hair that was loose on her head.
Beautiful, elegant and flawless. Violet was the same height and size with Asia but Violet lived the good life, much as they lived in the same house. She didn't work, didn't have to. Her every need was catered for. She was spoilt since she was little.
Asia finished eating before the colleagues got back. They found her already back to work. They checked what she was doing, loved it and made really minor changes then forwarded to their boss.
Asia could breathe. She went through her social media and smiled. Violet had tagged her on lots of photos taken minutes ago, photos taken with David in his office. Asia liked them and commented. The perfect couple.
"Miss Rivers, the Managing Director wants to see you immediately," the secretary from up above came calling.
All eyes were on Asia. She hadn't done anything wrong but there was no protocol. Nobody else in that office had had a one on one meeting with the MD. There were a lot more people ahead of them in hierarchy but Asia got called occasionally.
She got up, adjusted her dress and left on those doll shoes. She was five foot nine, slender and well endowed, at least her boyfriend told her often. She would deal with the MD firmly. That business of calling her every time he had a minute needed to end. She was working to get paid, not to fill in his diary.
"Good afternoon, sir," she began in jest.
"Sir? Seriously? Grab a seat and shake off the formality," he said, got up. Asia went for his seat.
"Why am I here, David?" she sat, swung in it.
"You are my friend," he said, went and sat opposite her smiling.
"Do you call your other friends to your office to chill with you?" she asked, went through the papers on the table.
"What other friends? I don't have other friends," he smiled. She opened a drawer and took his mint chewing gum.
"Okay, we will find you more friends then," she got up. "I do not like you dragging me from work for nothing. I am a very busy woman, David." She said firmly.
David smiled. He stood at six foot two and was well built. He worked out. His bulging muscles could be seen even through that fitting grey suit. Asia squinted and watched him.
"Are you hungry?" She asked.
"Of course I am hungry," he responded seriously.
Asia had so many questions. Didn't the sister bring him food? She did. David hadn't, wouldn't eat it. Instead, he asked Asia to accompany him to a meeting.
What meeting was held over lunch time? He threw her his car keys, asked her to carry his work laptop. That way, they would appear serious as they left. She did that but protested. He would pay for it, one way or the other.
Asia got in the driver's seat while he sat back left and off they left. Asia drove to the head office. The CEO, David's father, had an office there. They went up the elevator and to the office. The father was not in. When Asia asked, he had left the country and would be away for a week. So why exactly were they there?
Asia stared at David as fury filled her heart. She took off her shoes. David ducked as she threw the first at him, then the second. There was a knock and the secretary, a young man, came in with a basket of food. He briefly looked at Asia's bare feet then served food for two and left.
"Can't I have lunch with you without you biting my head off?" David asked, took off his coat.
"Do I look hungry to you?" she asked, stood akimbo.
"Yes, you …"
"Rhetorical, David! I am slim, not hungry, unlike you, my sister fed me," she sat, arms crossed on the chest. "When are you marrying anyway?"
"I do not want to. You and I cannot even just eat at my office. Your sister has spies watching me. She is psychotic!" David cursed, bit into a drum stick.
"I would like to defend her but damn, she would do that!" Asia suddenly went for the food."Still, when are you marrying?" she pushed.
"Girl, are you trying to choke me? Change the topic," he said, went on eating. "Allan …"
"Leave my boyfriend alone or I will choke you!" Asia jumped in. "You must produce a child of the promise," Asia hit back.
David stared at Asia briefly, turned on music he knew she liked then they both ate. Like he knew, soon enough she was up dancing. She could dance well. She turned round and round, picked a piece of chicken, bit and kept dancing. David kept eating. What if the father found out the two went there for meals like it was a hotel? She giggled at the thought. It is Violet that wouldn't find that funny.
David was done eating way before she was done with that piece of chicken. They cleaned up and got ready to leave. No, it was a little too soon. What meeting took twenty minutes?
Asia left him there, went to see her boyfriend in the tech department. David looked around. There was nothing he could do. He got his phone. Violet was the wallpaper. She had had a meltdown till he set it. For the sake of peace. He cursed. He could smother her given the chance. He laughed spitefully.
