When it was time for the trip, David sat at the airport lounge waiting for Violet. He went through the newspaper. A lot was happening in the business world.
Violet was late on purpose. She did it deliberately, kept him waiting to make herself feel important. They would fly out on a private jet. So she made herself feel more important by making everyone else wait. How else could you explain it? She had no job. All she needed to do was keep time.
David picked the newspaper and cursed. He loathed Violet. She wasn't fit to carry the child of the promise. She wasn't fit to carry any child. What exactly could she teach a child? Not to keep time? If it were a commercial flight, surely they would have missed it.
Violet arrived with two suitcases and three bags. Yes they would be away for two weeks but that luggage was way over the top. She would still want to go shopping. Why did she carry so much? What exactly did she carry? A bag full of lies and another full of tricks?
Violet was smiling as she walked to David, sweet words pouring out of her mouth. He folded the newspaper and got up for that hug that Violet would extend till kingdom come. He waited, stood there like a tree as she wrapped her arms round him. Didn't she ever get tired?
"Hello darling, the white polo shirt looks good on you," Violet said, wrapped her arm round David's.
"Why are you late, Violet?" David asked angrily.
"I needed to look good
David offered Violet his arm as they walked to the jet. She had sunglasses on like him. He would do the impossible to swap her for her sister.
With Asia, there was always a lot to talk about. They could work together and even talk politics. What did Violet love to do when she wasn't making herself feel important? Did she even cook? Asia made all the meals at home.
David cursed in his heart. He needed a way out and needed it fast. This was draining him. Seven hours in the air he endured it. Seven hours he thought of it. He would end it and save himself.
It was night time and his room would rescue him. He walked ahead of her as the luggage was ferried to their respective rooms. Once he pointed her to her room, he got into his, sat in bed and breathed.
That leech would suck all his blood. If leaving her would mean forfeiting all the wealth, he was ready. He undressed, got in bed and breathed. The meeting the next morning required all his attention. He needed the rest.
"Baby, you didn't have dinner," Violet was in David's bed.
"Violet, we talked about this. You remember boundaries? Get out of my room," David sat up.
"It's okay. We marry soon. We can share a bed. I need you," Violet said, got out of her robe. She was stack naked.
"What is wrong with you? Don't you ever listen? Get out of my room!" David got out of bed.
"Nine years I have been betrothed to you, David. Why can't we be like other couples and have sex? We need to make the child of the promise already. Everyone is waiting!" She got up and charged at him.
"You are mad and leave me no choice!" David pointed at her.
"I promise you will love it, baby, I am good at it, my love. Give me a chance my ..." Violet was pleading.
"You are sexually maladjusted, Violet Rivers!" David seethed.
"David please! It will only take minutes. We must make the child of the promise. Please!"
David scooped Violet up forcefully while she kicked trying to get free. He carried her out of the room, across to her room. He threw her in bed and asked her to get ready to head back home the following day. He had important meetings and couldn't rest with her there trying to bed him.
What was wrong with Violet? David bolted his door. Violet was a pristinely beautiful woman but her naked body didn't linger in David's mind. No. He wouldn't entertain her.
"Hi Asia, how are you?" David made the call.
"It is night time there, darling. Why are you calling?" Asia asked, a little too happy.
"I miss you." David said, meant it.
"I miss you too. I widh you were here, even just to annoy me," Asia said, chuckled.
"You are a good friend. I will buy you perfume and a few dresses. What else do you want?" David asked.
"A wrist watch." Asia said. "What has my sister done?"
"She tried to bed me. I feel disgusted, Asia. This must end." David said.
Asia listened attentively. She sympathized with both David and Violet. She understood them both. David needed to end that relationship.
But what would Violet do without the Mara name? She hadn't schooled past high school. She knew nothing other than being a Mara. Asia sighed.
"She will keep coming at you, David. She might even drug you if it will end with her carrying a child of the promise." Asia said.
"What should I do, Asia?" David was desperate.
"Artificial insemination will ..."
"Your sister is not well adjusted. Not enough to be a mother. Damn it. I cannot wait for this trip to end," David didn't even feel safe.
The days that followed, David wasn't back from the meeting till midnight. He kept that routine, left early every morning and stayed away from Violet. He gave her his card and enjoyed the trip.
The families were happy that the two were away together. They waited to hear that Violet was pregnant. They waited to hear the two set a wedding date. The thought made David chuckle.
The thought made Violet panic. She needed to work out a solid plan. She had no life out of the Mara marriage. She hadn't even been to school past high school. There had been no need. She was spoilt through and through. This had to work.
